Ahh cool!

Tumblehome usually refers to the shape of the hull, a hull which slopes inward from the waterline, like the DDX. Not sure if this is what Werner refers to though.

The stern has this shape: /==

Technically, I think it's "reverse tumblehome" in this case.

Thanks for posting the pics Tony! And thanks Timmy for the comment! The model is far more advanced right now. I'm at a stage where I can't bypass the more complicated PE assembies (cranes, catapults and radars)

Hope I can share some more pics real soon. The only real thing I don't like about this kit is the PE pully for the cranes. The riggings are not etched through. To me they look like what you would get on a styrene kit. The rigging is relief etched but in between there is still PE and thus they look clunky. Saddly I haven't found a suitable replacement for these parts.
Also some parts have been done in resin instead of PE and that makes them far more difficult to work with. The crane rests and the boat craddles are made of very very fine resin and are a pain to sand. The result is that the pieces look out of scale because I could not really sand them without breaking them in the process.

Apart from that, the model goes together nicely without any surprises. I recommend it to anyone wanting to build a model of these beautiful ships and to those' like me, who haven't got the money for the excellent 1/350 versions out there.

Cheers :wave_1:

Hi Guys,
Sylvain,
Your doing great!
The bases for the crane could be made from styrene couldn't they? I sold my Samek Guam to Martin, so I don't have it any more, (no references), so I'm guessing here.
For those who/m like 1/350th scale, I have the ISW Alaska/Guam; it is a large model, but will take a long time to build. Almost every part will need some kind of "massaging" prior to paint/assembly.
There is a good range of a/m parts that could be used to replace some of the kits' stuff.
Great work Sylvain!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

Here's a few shots of the finished Alaska, although some weathering and stains will be added to the hull later. You will have to excuse the quality of the shots as I have no base for it and it does not have any props, shafts or rudders, so it's just sitting in the unfinished dio base.
The small disturbence in the water at the bow in the first photo is where one of the tugs will be.

Kym,

Looks great!

Are you going to put more figures out on the deck? When a ship of any size pulls into port, there are dozens of people at each mooring point for line handling.

Thanks for posting those Alaska pics Kym!!! :thumbs_up_1: The model looks very impressive by itself but the dio once finished promises to be a show stopper!!!

That's it for now! Since the pictures were taken I started installing the 20mm guns and I also added some small bits here and there.

Enjoy! :wave_1:

You know Sylvain, it amazes me how you guys work in such a small scale. your model looks great and it's a credit to you. I though building large scale was fiddly in some parts, but with such small scales I would never have the patience.
Well done on such an interesting subject. Now one of those in 1/96 Radio Controlled would be something else.

Thanks for the comments guys!!! :thumbs_up_1: Right now the Alaska is on hold until my CIC gives birth to our first child. I'm pretty excited right now and i don't think I would be able to work with those pesky 20 mms!!!!!! :lol_pound:

Cheers :wave_1:

Best of luck with the baby Sylvain!! Oh, and say bye-bye to modeling for awhile!! (He says, typing with one hand while holding his week old daughter in the other arm....)

Oh yes, the ship looks great!

Thanks a lot Martin!!! I knew I wouldn't be able to model for a while so I went into overdrive in order to finish off most of my projects. And since I can model at work while on lunch break, I should be able to do some work and finish off the Alaska without missing any time with the baby. (hmm wishful thinking maybe??? :lol_pound:

Cheers and congrats to you and your wife Martin!!
