id like to start with a question. which time frame do you prefer your Hood?

As built-1920s

1930s with A/C catapult

1941 As sunk

?

My choice would be the 1924 Empire cruise fit, her days of glory

As for the timeframe preference - as built/Empire cruise, definitely!

By the way, has anyone ever thought about building one of the other Admiral class ships?

Admiralty cruise is a beautiful version, it's also WELL DOCUMENTED. The 1941 version is sometimes driving me nuts, using photographs to piece her together. Even Roberts and Northcot admitted that heir drawings where sometimes wrong (Hey, there's more than one first on my model. Just not completed "first").

For instance, does anyone have info on the HACS Mk III Director? Please do not say things as "Did you try John Lambert" or try "this or that Hood book"? Yes, I have! And no, it does not look at all like the Mk IV-VI's, but a little like the Mk II, so any info on that unit is also welcome. I just need its main dimensions for a start :cry_3:

And no, the model is not finished, but I nearly almost completely (but not yet) finished my custom etch set drawing...

We can finally talk about the kit publically and no one thought to bump this thread?

So, let's talk References
Books
Randy at Shipcamouflage.com is selling the Classic Warships Book for $14.00 which is a good deal on a good book. (plug for a sponsor of this site)

Websites
Navy Historical Center Hood Page.
HMS Hood Association has some photos and references that are of use as well.

Technically, that's not true--Hood was present at the pre-emptive gunning-down of the French fleet, an event which could be perceived as firing her guns in anger, albeit under rather unusual circumstances.

Very true and the thing is that she got hits on the french ships. I have a photo here in a magazine of a french destroyer without great part of the stern, in other words, she was hit by Hood.

Hi,

slight change of direction...I have a 1/350 Trumpeter Hood on order :woo_hoo: BUT I also have a 1/400 Heller Hood and PE, which is now surplus to requirements....however I notice on the Hood website references to the proposed refit so I am comtemplating building a 1/400 possible refit, anybody know of any good references for the proposed refits (other than the Hood site) ?

Thanks in advance,
Mark D.

Hi, a few progress photos to share with you guys...
As you will see from the photos, the midships area was totally removed and rebuilt with sheet styrene. In the process now of framing the "holes" for the forward secondary guns that were removed and filled in her WWII refit...

Hope you guys enjoy and comments/advice welcome

The finished Duilio :eyebrows:

Miguel, I saw the photos of your Caio Duilio, very well done, I especially liked the deck, I believe I am going to go for a plain and simple deck on the Hood and Tiger...that may change though. Glad to hear you will be doing a Hood, can't wait to see what you do with it. I have the photoetch from WEM specific for the Hood, the Warship Pictorial from Steve Wiper and also have the Anatomy of the Warship: Battlecruiser Hood...both excellent references if you are in need of one. The photoetch from WEM looks like a great set, I am very pleased with it, I also have the GMM WW2 British Warship set, which has a lot of Hood specific parts, but nothing really stood out to me as better on the GMM set than the WEM set, but the GMM has the catapult and crane set included whereas WEM does not, but as your planning 41 and not 31 - 32 then that is not a needed addition for you.

Keep us posted with progress pics, I love pictures

Hi guys, a little more progress to show here...I'm waiting for a response from WEM with regards to the 5.5in secondary armament she carried in 1922....they were also carried on the HMS Chester, which WEM makes, so hopefully they will have the dozen 5.5in guns available for me to purchase separately for this project, otherwise its down to scratch building, while easy, is tough to duplicate in 1/700 without molding....

This photo is just of some minor details I decided to add to the portside quarterdeck...Still have both stairways up to the upper deck to be added, but they will be added at a later date to save on "breakability"

Hey Everyone, I aslo have the Tamiya 1/700 kit and am new to the Hood. Are there alot of fixes required on this kit or is it overall fairly accurate? What types of fixes are necessary? I have the warship pictorial book and the eduard photo etch set. What else do I "really" need to make it accurate? Any tips are appreciated.

Angeleyes:

What a great model! The Hood (and the Bismarck and Tirpitz) is my all-time favorite.

My own favorite versions of Hood are post-1936 refit, and post-1939 refit.

A great deal of the visual appeal of this ship, I believe, lies in the rows of secondary turrets along the sides. When these were removed during her 1940 refit, it left her with a rather "toothless" appearance. Unfortunately, this "as sunk" version seems to be what most manufacturers want to produce.

I've modelled two versions of Hood, a 1/600 model of her as she looked as part of the International Neutrality Patrol during the Spanish Civil War.
Also, 1 1/400 Hood as she looked after her 1939 refit, but before her 1940 refit.

Here's an idea that worked well for me on the 1/400 model: In the Gold Medal Models 1/350 PE set for the USS Arizona/Pennsylvania, there are turret gun houses for secondary turrets for the Pennsylvania version. These are good to use for the dual 4" H/L angle mounts on the post 1939 refit version. These gunhouses would be included in a 1941 version, but would be missing from any earlier version.

Another advantage (from my own perspective, at least) of modelling a pre-1940 version would be that you would not have those dangerous (to her own crew) Rube Goldberg UP projectile launchers! :thumbs_up_1:

Again, a beautiful model of a beautiful prototype! :thumbs_up_1:

Picked up my Hood today.

First off, let me say I am no Hood expert. Hood was a boyhood favorite of mine but it hasn't received the scruitiny I've put other ships under. So I'm going to speak generally.

When Trumpeter first came on the scene their ships were welcome but left something to be desired. It appeared that with each release however that they were improving, so there was the feeling that if the current ship had problems, at least the next model would have less of them. This progress plateaued with the CV-2 Lex kit and took a bit of a step back on the North Carolina. So I was a little unsure about this kit when the first test shot photos came out.

I'm going to state that my initial impressions are that the Hood kit puts Trumpeter BACK on the upward track. The upper and lower hull parts FIT. They have learned to NOT include locating slots for the deck pieces that actually make things fit WORSE. The main battery features barrels that are round and not trapezoid.

That said, this is still a kit that will need some clean up. WHile there is little to no flash, many of the edges feature irregular bumps here and there that might impede a good fit. Many of the knocking pins that they took pains to put on the back of parts, out of sight, have flash that *will* muck up your fit if you don't do some sanding and cutting ahead of time.

It's going to be hard sitting on this kit to see what PE comes available and which I like best.

Managed to spend a little time snipping and gluing last night so here's a couple more points.

* The forward deck joint is at a breakwater, but there's a path through this so proper alignment of the deck is moderately important unless you don't want the deck planking to mismatch. The two sections of the deck are slightly different thicknesses (between .01-.02" but I didn't measure) so you will not be able to lay them on a flat surface for gluing. I found that I could get the planking to line up across the deck even though originally it looked like there was a slight mismatch. On my model when the deck was lined up flush, there was a slight gap between the bottom of the barbette and the deck itself; I will measure this gap later tonight and report.

* the forward deck piece is just a touch WIDER than the amidships piece. Enough that you get a gap on the deck if it's not sanded down.

* Initial fit of the main deck to the hull looks entirely manageable. Use liquid cement and you'll be able to glue it down a couple of inches at a time. Use tube glue and you might get a slight ripple as it doesn't fit naturally perfect. The bevel on the forward deck feels a bit odd to me; I'll look at this more tonight and see if it should be sanded or if I'm just loopy.

* Initial superstructure work: I really can't stress enough how important it is with Trumpeter ships to pay attention to the knocking pins on the backs of pieces. There were several instances where flash from the indents, odd bumps here and there, and "outie" knocking pins marks would have caused gaps in joints had I not sanded and cut them flush. Even with this work, one of the main deck pieces (on the interior where it's less visible) is going to need to be shimmed and filled. The other joints I was able to get tight enough that it's just going to need a quick pass with a sanding stick.

Comment: Them Hawse pipes are big; I wish there were separate pieces and openings so you could pass through. I may pack this area with epoxy putty and drill through. Anyoe got any good shots down the pipe?

Spent a little bit more time tonight on Hood while waiting for some other models to dry.

Started gluing the hull bottom and top together and noticed two things, one good, the other just something to be aware of.

First off, the eyebrows over the portholes are MUCH finer than in past Trumpeter 1/350th kits.

Second, for a couple of inches near the bow on the starboard side, there is a bit of a reverse slope to the plastic on the upper piece such that it slopes OUT a bit and is a wee bit thicker. It's not that much and looks like a minor molding flaw, but it could affect sanding a bit if not noticed.
