Good movie - worth the 2 hrs 35 minutes. This movie does not glorify war, but focuses on the human tragedy consequential to war. The title is in Japanese above YAMATO in the first image "Otoko-Tachi No YAMATO" which translates as "Men`s YAMATO".

Brief story overview:

The movie starts in the Yamato museum in Kure. A woman appearing to be in her forties views the exhibits, then proceeds to a Kyushu port and attempts to hire a boat to take her to latitude 3043N longitude 12804E. No takers - it`s 200KM out into the East China Sea.

She eventually finds an old fishing boat skipper (grey bearded guy) who asks why that particular position is of interest. Turns out the lady wants to honour her father who was a YAMATO survivor recently deceased by visiting the spot where the ship sank on the 60th anniversaryof the event (April 7, 2005).

Coincidentally, the fishing boat skipper was a good friend of her fathers; they reported aboard YAMATO together as IJN recruits, survived, but lost track of each other after the war.

The story develops through flashbacks as the skipper recalls their experiences from just before Leyte to the end in the East China Sea while they are enroute the spot.

Action sequences are excellent and capture the havoc straffing and bomb hits wreak on topside crewman and are somewhat like the action footage from Saving Private Ryan. The characters central to the movie man
a triple 25mm anti-aircraft gun. There are too few panoramic views of the battle. One good sequence is from behind an Avenger torpedo plane as it makes its approach. YAMATO can be seen growing larger, turning to starboard, charging through forests of geysers from dive bomber close aboard bomb misses, smoking from damage, guns blazing. The ship capsizing is also well done - better than the Pearl Harbour movie scene of OKLAHOMA.

I counted only nine USN aircraft shot down in the final battle, which I believe is only one more than YAMATO`s and her escort`s guns actually brought down; this another indication this movie`s creation is not an indication of resurging Japanese militarism.

The movie has a good ending. I`ll see if there are plans for foreign release.

Wow!

Thanks for the info - I'm hoping that it might see some release outside of Japan, but I'll probably have to wait until it hits DVD and my local foreign video pusher can get it! I've already talked to him about it, so hopefully in a couple of months....?

Alas, in the meantime, I must find comfort in the 1/350 Yamato I am (slowly) working on....

I must admit, my interest in Yamato came after a visit to Tokyo back in the early 80s, just after the anime "Space Battleship Yamato" was released. Of course, it was a few years before I found out that there had been a REAL battleship Yamato...

Which, in my opinion, is way cooler than any space battleship...

Other impressions:

In one scene, during training and work-ups, a recruit assigned to a twin 5"
gun drops a shell on the deck while handling it from the upper hoist to the loaders awaiting at the breach. The gun crew stare wide-eyed in shock. Later, deep within the YAMATO, some traditional IJN discipline: a petty officer is to discipline the recruit, but a shipmate steps forward and assumes responsibility for the recruit`s bad form. The petty officer orders him to bend-over and extend hands, and promptly beats the guy senseless across the backside with what appears to be an axe handle while the rest of the gunners look on in ranks. The movie viewers squirmed uncomfortably in their seats during this scene.

The YAMATO movie set appears to be accurate in every detail, but I would not have been able to tell what was incorrect.

Some recent Japan Times articles on Otoko Tachi No Yamato. One of the articles lists the movie title in English as Yamato: The last Battle. Often, Western movies are titled differently from the US or European release when showing in Japan.

Hi all, I just bought the Tamiya 1:350 IJS Yamato along with Eduards PE set! She's my first large scale ship and I'm really looking forward to building her. I'm waiting until the last quarter of 2006 to start in order to join in with Armorama.com's Leyte Gulf campaign. Have any of you built the kit or used the Eduard PE set? Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Phil

As I heard - no. It's a very good set.
I have this PE set too. And I'm thinking about "Yamato upgrade" (3505A) from GMM.

And I have a question about another detail sets :)

Are the detail sets, like turrets, guns, etc (resin or metal, whatever ;) ), available for this kit? Of course in 1:350 scale :)

TIA

Hi Yamamaniacs,

Lion Roar is about to release a comprehensive PE set, like their offering for the North Carolina and the Mikasa it looks pretty complete to me:

The pics are too large to place them all in this post, so here are the links for the instructions:

I don't know the prices in the USA or elsewhere, but in Germany the price should be around 80 Euros.

Hi Pedro,

the shop is in germany, you can find it here: http://www.modellbauwelt-bliestal.de/

Go to 'Produktübersicht' - 'Modellbau 1:350/1:700' - 'Zurüstartikel', there you find Lion Roar (and Voyager Models).
The Yamato set isn't listed in the Online-Shop yet, but the shop owner told me it's scheduled for release this month and should be available shortly after that.
The price information is not from him, it's only my (serious) suggestion.
Drop them an E-Mail for further information, i mailed with them several times and sometimes got an answer within minutes. :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you! Brilliant. Now I HAVE to do Yamato again as well. But it will be a great comparison between my Musashi and Yamato.

1/350 Musashi
- Steve Nuttal's superset barrels
- WEM Ultimate Photoetch
- Eduard Musashi photoeth

1/350 Yamato
- Lionroar only

But I want the 1/350 AA guns. Anyone who know if they are available separately?

Does anybody know where you can find good plans of the Yamato to use for scratchbuild, beginning to consider doing it for my first scratch..

You've checked the Floating Drydock, I'm sure? Oh, and what scale do you plan on doing her? And R/Cified, or no?

Janusz Skulski's "Anatomy of battleship Yamato," published by the Naval Institute Press. It is fantastic and the one source to have. If you have access to a copiermachine you can resize the pictures up to your prefered scale.

Thanks Tom, I will look into the book, try to find one around where I am before I order it..

Also, I am considering designing a Hull 210 after I do the Yamato, but I am unsure how to design it. I will try to post a picture of what I currently know I want it to look like when I get the chance.

Okay, did this thread die after I posted?
Anyway, onwards to business..

The Super Yamato has finally taken shape, and it is time to start designing.. :woo_hoo: I will ask for anybody who is interested to add any suggestions they may have.. I have not scaled the drawing with any other designs of the Yam yet, but it is still a beginning at least..

Remember, this is just the beginning of the plan, all suggestions welcome. :thumbs_up_1:
