New Mexico class BB is among my US ship favorites, there is a picture I think is the New Mexico the one on the picture, you see the battleship and in the background you can see Mount Fuji too. I love that shot, if i ever find it I'll post it. those are great shots Jim

Great job on your models, Jim. Very well done. I liked the camouflage. I liked the profile shots at low angle in particular. Most photos of real ships are at low angle and not normally from above so sometimes photos of models don't quite match my preconceptions.

Agreed, great job Jim and thanks for the pics. Maybe this post will help bring back this topic. This class of BBs is really unique and under-represented.

Hi all New Mexico class fans. I haven't checked this particular thread in quite a while hence the long delay between the picture posts and my reply. The models are wonderful and really convey the bulk of these ships. I also hope that this will keep this thread alive. Congrats to Jim Russell for his building expertise. Also to J. Soca for the additional pictures. I have been busy obtaining and redoing the necessary drawings with the intention of building a 1/96 scale hull for the New Mexico and with the help of Ron Smith I believe that I have what I need to start building. If requested, I will keep all posted on my so far extremely slow progress which hopefully will increase once the building process actually begins. Thanks all.

To all, thanks. The 1944 OBB's are right at the top of my favorites. The modifications are interesting and the story of Surigao Strait cannot be beat.

Frank R., you may want to consider starting a thread in the "Online Scratchbuilding Projects" area. There are a number of large scale projects underway and if you have any questions someone who can assist is more likely to see your post. then you can put the finished model here.

Glad to hear that you've got a solution for the missing hull drawings, and that you will begin construction soon. I'm sure that all here would love to follow the building process in the scratchbuilding section. The only large-scale model (I think 1/96) of the New Mexico that I am aware of can be found in the Nimitz museum in Fredericksburg, TX. I'm pretty sure it was donated by the USS New Mexico Association, but I'm not sure who the builder was. Nice model. I'll try and post some pics if I can find them.

A question for the Idaho experts:

If I wanted to build the Big Spud in an August 1944 fit, which Midships Models kit would be better, 41 or 45?

I don't think she had the 5"/38s yet in 8/44, but the 41 model certainly wouldn't have the right radars.....

What Midship 1945 fit Idaho? There is no such thing.
(I ordered the one listed as such from Freetime Hobbies, and got a 1941 fit with the same Midship kit number. (Freetime still lists it as 1945 fit, BTW.))

I've started work on the Midship Models 1:700 New Mexico, going for that December 1941 splotch pattern. According to the Classsic Warships book, the hull splotches are 5-N Navy Blue on a 5-O Ocean Gray background. But in December 1941, weren't they still using 5-S Sea Blue? Anyone here know for sure, or have a better feel for interpreting those photos? (I hope to get this right - I don't want to paint the splotches more than once! )

Go with Navy Blue. Use of Sea Blue had been pretty much been discontinued by that time.

Chasing that down on Researcher@Large and... what do you know, there's a specific Norfolk order from September 1941 saying to use 5-N in Ms. 12 (mod) Solves that problem every which way. Thanks much!
(And now I get to wondering about my completed, as-commissioned USS Juneau in its 5-S hull splotches... granted, it wasn't built at Norfolk, but still... Sheesh, those 5-D and 5-S colors sure had a short life!)
