Hi Atma,
are there any other hints suggesting that the other Mogami-class 1/700 cruisers will be produced by Fujimi (than the engineering you mentioned)? Also, any news about the Maya release you mentioned in the Takao thread earlier this year?

The detail looks very nice but, as far as I can make out, the hull blister is non existent. Something that Tamiya managed to include.

do you mean the torpedo bulge? This struck me, too - they seem to have separated from the hull. It can be seen here just below the main hull part (2nd and 3rd part from the top). I have never seen it done this way...

There is a hull blister, offered as a separate part(Parts D1--D2) and is not molded on. You can see it at the pictures Timmy posted at the first picture the third sprue.

Can anybody help me out with which Tamiya 1/700 boxings are the newer molds of the Mogami class? I'm looking to get one of each of the class eventually but want to make sure I don't end up with the old molds as I already have them and am looking to replace them. Are any of the new Tamiya molds in a light cruiser configuration with the triple 6" turrets?

Also, as pure bang for the buck does the Tamiya beat the Fujimi kit? Seems to be comments on the wonderful detail on the Fujimi kit, but it is pretty expensive. Is Tamiya's detail close enough considering the price difference?

I did not see the separate blisters - thx. Interesting, though a little dicey to attach correctly without gaps.

Is it worth it? Many have built the Tamiyas into beautiful models, but it does require adding details that may be included in the Fujimi kit. It's hard to say without having seen the Fujimi kit. I think most look favorably on the new Fujimi toolings but, as with all kits, there are always issues.

There is no comparison with Tamiya, the new Fujimi IJN Mogami is years ahead in detail and quality over the old Tamiya's.
And the only kit from Tamiya that comes with 15 cm turrets is the IJN Kumano.

were the bulges torpedo bulges, or were they added to improve metacentric height after she and the Mikuma were found to be unstable during early trials?

The bulges were for stability. Looks like i will have to try out the Fujimi mogami. I have all the newest Tamiya class offerings. Which i like alot. The thing i like about tamiya is not the details, those can always be added. It's the correct lines and the thickness of the parts.

Question, I was looking over the new fujimi mogami and I didn't see any degaussing coils on the side of the hull .. Did mogami have them or where they removed in 1943-44 ?

An excellent question with no certain answer. New capitol ship construction in 1943-44 (Oyodo, Unryus), along with some large scale reconstruction (Isuzu) clearly had no external coils. Others (all the Aganos) still emerged with external coils.

It's impossible to tell w/o a photograph, though Mogami was reconstructed early enough in the war (finished late April, 1943) that she might still have retained a coil. FWIW.

ah OK that's kinda as I thought.. i remember that this was a big question when it came to IJN Maya some time back and whether her coil was removed back in I think 1943 when she was damaged and was in the process of being rebuilt as an AA cruiser. so I think ill pick one up in a few days now . Now i just can't wait for a new tooled Kumano and Suzaya ( and yes I did read the posts above lol but sadly I don't have the faith in my self to do all the reworking after a botched attempt a year ago) :/

Well, keep in mind that Maya underwent construction nearly a year later than Mogami, so the trend to eliminating coils would have been more in force. Plus, Maya's Dec 1943 damage photos certainly indicate no degaussing cable.

Quick question .. How good is the Gakken IJN Mogami class book? Ive been looking far and wide for it and there is one on the eBay for about 60 buck!! Now I know pictures of these ships are rare and late war pics almost nonexistent. So I ask the question is this a good book to use as a guide? And is there enough marital for a late war build? And is it even worth the money?

Yes the book is worth the price .It is one of the hardest to find .Pictures of completed models are great .
