There were two of this class, the CALIFORNIA (CGN-36) and the SOUTH CAROLINA (CGN-37). Both were scrapped although the SoCar's bow is outside a gate at Bremerton Washington.
I'm building a 1/96 scale radio-controlled model. The hull is molded fiberglass, superstructure is laser-cut plexiglass. Other fittings will be resin castings or 3D printouts. Pictures to follow.

Dear Folks,

Thank you, Bruce. I've been remiss in not posting here. I'll catch everyone up. I made a plug,

Image

built a mold,

Image

and cast a hull.

Image

Bilge keels were marked

Image

and grooves cut into the hull:

Image

You may notice that my hull has the shaft tubes and rudder posts cast into it, rather than cutting, aligning, and gluing your own using jigs.

Image

The Sonar dome is a separate casting of a 3D printing of a solid model in CAD:

Image

The superstructure and main deck are plexiglass, laser cut and glued together with notches for alignment:

Image

Image

The masts and yardarms were likewise cast from solid models:

Image

The completed forward superstructure and masts, with the ballcap I wore while assigned to the "Golden Grizzly"

The assembled parts now look like this:

More to come when I get some Christmas presents.

Sincerely,
Nelson Petteys

Pictures of a 1/350th scale resin model at this years OrangeCon in So Cal. It was a very nice looking model, along with a 1/350th USS Leahey.

I do apologise, but I don't know the builder..... Maybe he will see it here and post about it.

My own 1/72 CGN-36 had a test run with her superstructure on for the first time on the weekend, she ran well even in some strong wind gusts....If I had remembered to bring my small box of lead bits I would have ballasted her 10mm deeper for a more realistic state of ballasting.

Here are some pix more can be seen in her build thread in scratch building section.

A 1/96 scale of this hull will be out by xmas or early 2015 from Scale Shipyard. We had to build the hull twice due to damage from shipping. The hull was built using accurate hull lines that were obtained from the US Navy.

Hi,

Is there a Photo Set at 1/700 scale for the USS California CGN-36?

Flyhawk produced a detail photo etch set for USS Virginia CGN-38 at 1/700 scale (ref FH710002):

Thanks.

I don't believe so.

Flyhawk's set for the CGN-38 class was prompted by Dragon's 2010(?) plastic kit, but there is no current kit of the CGN-36 class in 1/700, so no relatively-recent PE.

You may be able to get the PE from the old JAG kit, which was adopted by Admiralty Modelworks when JAG retired from ship models. Unfortunately, Admiralty has dropped off the screen and may have gone out of business. Here's an image of that PE (from the MW review):
Image

The good news is that there are few potential-PE items on the Californias, aside from railings, that cannot be sourced from other sets, like the SPS-48 and -40/-49, etc.

Here's my current build of the (very) old Naval Works kit into a post-NTU/post-refueling SoCar: https://picasaweb.google.com/1031830886 ... N37Project

Hello,

I served on the USS South Carolina CGN-37 1985 - 1987. I am looking for a model kit of the ship. Unfortunately, I am disabled with a terminal heart condition and on Social Security and cannot afford a custom built one. I know all you guys are experienced builders and what I want is far below your level but I am hoping maybe someone can help me. I have been looking for something for a couple years now and I would love to have something before my time is up. If anyone is aware where I can get one for under $200 please let me know. you can feel free to email me at jweaver214 (at) sbcglobal (dot) net.

Alleluia :wave_1: ..... The 1:96 scale USS California CGN-36 class cruiser hull is finally in production. It only took about 80 hours of additional sanding and polishing for this mold to get her back into the fiberglass shop for the first production hull.

The first Production hull came out beautifully. So I was able to take the portrait set today.
Image

The location of the Bilge Keels, stern tube & strut arm locations as well as the rudder post location in molded in the hull, These show you where to drill or cut the hull for these items. I suggest not slotting through the hull for the bilge keels.
Image

I used a sharpie to highlight the details in the bottom of the hull, otherwise you would not be able to see them.

Image

The next 2 photos show the seam down the hull where the 2 halves were joined together, I use a method that is very strong and clean.
Image

Image

The anchor bolster on the port bow is shown here as well as the large integral sonar dome. :thumbs_up_1:
Image

This hull is laid up in 2 pieces due to the scale sonar dome that we mold into the hulls that are so equipped. The hull is then seamed together in the mold with a strip of fiberglass matt and then a strip of 2" wide fiberglass tape for extra strength. I do this process in my shop to ensure the best job possible.

This mold is going through some additional touch up work and will be back in the mold shop for hull #2 in about a week.

Today I got some more photos of the Nuke cruisers.

Image

Image

This hull sells for $419.00 + S&H. A detailed plans set is also available for this hull at additional cost. ( $79.00 )

Hi,

What parts are included in the JAG Collective 1/700 USS California CGN-36 upgrade set (resin)?
A photo would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Ayala Botto
