yes, I can´t afford contracting cataracts, keeping on looking into photos for-ever young aka Alphaville. I fear miyukikai guy seemed to have such problem when I saw him in the eyes in Tokyo last December....

Have been rechecking width of linoleum brass stripes for the sake of cruiser Chokai.
Am estimating there can be 2 types, thin and a bit wider one. 30 mm and ca.45mm respectively.
I know a very advanced PE brass stripe with bolts are now used for 1/700, it´s overscaling is appauling and shocking. It´s almost 150-200mm wide. I bet thin painitng-method would be much better.

I'm sorry to hear that about Mr. Takumi (?), the Miyukikai guy. I wonder if that's why we haven't seen any new plan sets from him in a while.

I happen to agree that nearly every photo etch version of the brass strips is overscale in 1/700. Even the best of them, from Gold Medal Models on their IJN Ultra Fine railing set, is still .003" wide. In 1/700 scale that works out to 2 inches/50mm, which is certainly a big improvement. But, of course, those are very difficult to glue in place.

Digital photography has been driving the trend towards super detailing in this scale. Still, I think this particular feature works better in 1/350 and larger scales. Just my opinion.

I do admire the work that the modeler who runs the Nenkobo website does. I've been following his work for years.

He has another issue abt original plans;for ex. good, comprehensive, full plans of cruiser Kako/Furutaka, Aoba/Kinugasa 1944/1942,Chokai 1944 in 1/96 or 1/100 do not exist, so he can not convert them into 1/200 to initiate rendering processes at all. I´m sort of in a position to help create them into workable plans for Hyuga/Ise,Kako cl. Aoba cl. in 1/100 from year-long researches and models of mine, the thing is he and me are in a different business agent connection...

Pr your mention I can feel the ones from Gold Medals will be very close to the width of real brass stripes. Being closer to 2.5 inch/50mm is super fine for small scale kit models. I can only manage to cut stripes out to 0,5mm with expression of bolts. If I fumble, it tends to become 0,6mm or more,it is too wide,if too thin,it is liable to bend, breaks open,I have to throw them away.
This is a compromise I have made on 1/100 Chokai.
When finished, the model is going to be a mind-blowing one with new discoveries & interpretations,I can not afford losing eyesight yet.

No worries. We'll bring in Dr. Frankenstein to work on you if need be.

Chokai looks great, Mucho.

I used to eat lots of vegetables, give massages to eyeballs,so i may be cheating cataracts in a way :)D

Pr now there´re 2 more modelers who are building(scratched) Takao cl. cruisers in 1/200.
Are exchanging views, photos, ideas, jokes and others on the facebook.

Suppose some can not get to the link, some latest pics of his(their) work are borrowed from them.
Teikoku-kobo is working on Takao when commisioned.
The other is on Chokai 1944 like mine´s(he is taking a long break now, though)

Mucho, have you considered using 1/700 scale strips for your 1/200 model? Dan K knows which ones are the smallest candidates. I have a set of Super Star SS350038 that appear to be about .25mm wide, but Five Star look similar and have a spacing tool included:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Five-Star-7100 ... Swd4tT6hHc

They may be slightly over scale, but almost any detail on a scale model has the same problem. At least they have depressions to represent the fasteners. It's good to see the progress you've been making. Nice work.

Thanks, Mike. Being slightly overscaled is not a problem. Am sure it can be used to a larger scale.Quite agreed, yeah

Expressing depressions of small bolts on the funnel surface on models is not something new,but they were more or less overscaled and still now. This is a compromize I have made. Used gold-color stick paper, cut into strips, then applied depression on the reverse side.
Chokai 1/100 ,1 year +3months after the start.
Still a long way to go.
Enjoying modelling life? maybe or not

mucho,

hi, all and Dan. Some modellers used thin gold-plated brass sheet,¨
and were successful for their 1/200 scrath built models.
I got on the bandwagon by using gold-plated paper sheet for this time.

Here is another good example of Cruiser Chokai build(1/200), fully sratched. Author Shin1966 goes into details of
the superstructure and fittings. Joint researches are rendered possible when there are 2 or more modellers building the same cl. fighting ships of IJN.

Beautiful looking Chokai.

I am curious, though. While it makes perfect sense that Chokai's late war modifications would closely resemble Maya's, I don't know of any actual references for her other than the June 30, 1944 schematic by S.Fukui. Is there other information out there?

Dan, I will have to say Fukui´s is not thorough-going as the very final source of infomation.
He would be admitting that other refits/additions done outside of the homeland arsenals are not included in his/the 2nd Repatriation Bureau´s documents.

There actually are "some places" which were added before the modification-plan march 1944 on Chokai.
But not so many. AA mg gun crews´standby rooms and binocular stand on either side on top of the main bridge would be some examples. More precisely this binocular stand has a overhanging unlike that of Maya 1944,latter half of the bino-stand floor(Chokai) is indented, though.
(pls. see one of my photos of Chokai model posted on july the 4th in the above)

Abt. 25mm AA mgs mr.Fukui descrives the numbers as 38. However, one of maru-special book authors went so far as to write the numbers on Chokai as of late 1944 were increased to almost as many as those on Maya 1944. = Chokai includes single 25mm mgs of which numbers were increased from Fukui´s 12 to 24. With those revised info i suddenly got into a busy affair with her in the spring of last year when i sat down to start modelling...Can be a real love-affair with Chokai, perhaps.

No other valid info, but some visual photo references can be of very effective clues to finding out changes/addings on Chokai.
br
mucho,

You might want to post this question on the main page. Somebody more knowledgeable may have a lead, or image.

Thank you, Dan, for I found what I had been looking for. I was to figure out shapes of laundry machine/centrifugal and dryer of cruiser Chokai. Takao & 2 other sister ships ought to have the same type/model,these machines can be seen from a corner of the starboard HA gun shield deck.

Stern section of Chokai 1944, not by interpretations, but by visual observations of existing materials...

I hope you have air conditioning. I hear it's been rough. The heat hasn't affected the quality of work, though.

Luckily, a cold front sneaked into hot air-mass,working as a natural airconditioner.
Summer will usually be over in 2 weeks in the latitude where I live.
So,I felt tempted to put seaplane on catapults of which frame-work is not fully completed yet.Just begun.
