The picture above of the Long Beach with 2 Frigates outboard was taken at HMAS Naval Base Sterling near Fremantle West Australia. I reported aboard Long Beach at that port. She was my first boat. Her next stop was Hobart Tasmania where I met my First Wife. An eventful tour. The Derwent and Swan threw us a party at the beach in the back ground. As I recall, myself and a friend road the beer boat, which was shuttling coldies from the ships to the beach, back to the LB along with the chaplain. There was no ladder so we climbed the propeller guard on the Derwent. The Chaplain was a hefty guy and the Coxswain let the boat drift away from the propeller guard hoping to see an officer swim. I told the "Bloke" to knock it off earning eternal thanks from the Chaplain and I hope some brownie points from the guy upstairs.

You got me to reminiscing, sorry.

LMAO mate! Great story... Here is same pic (low res unfortuntly) from fwd angle

I am currently building the Cyber Hobby kit of the Long Beach during the Vienam war era.

I am trying to figure out the aft mast installation. Cyber Hobby instructions show part G20 to be installed at the base of the mast (a part with 8 beams around it).

This photo in Navsource clearl shows that there was no such thing:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/1109/04010957.jpg
(USS Long Beach (CGN 9) following an underway replenishment with the USS Niagara Falls (AFS 3) off the coast of Vietnam in 1969.)

This part is also called for in the 1961 version, but it is not there too:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/1109/04010958.jpg
(USS Long Beach (CGN 9) underway in Boston Harbor in the summer of 1961.)

So clearly this part is not necessary. My question is if this istallation ever existed in any time frame of the ship's service life.

Re: Cyber Hobby part G20

Good eye, mate. The shape of part G20 suggests an array of receiver antennas for a direction finder. It is analogous to the beehive dome aboard USS Enterprise with its many antennas whose v-shape suggests VHF-band.

< http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/1109/04010958.jpg > shows that the actual pylon (a mast has running rigging) has a spreader just below the stovepipe for a fan of vertical wire antennas, certainly VHF. My guess is that G20 is that spreader, instead of the cross-tree.

Friday I got on the Long Beach and went back down to my old workspace, #1 Engine Room. While they have been cutting up down there, it is still largely intact. I found the experience a very sad one. Yeah, I know it's an inanimate object, yeah, I know that there are too many preserved ships already, and yeah, it wasn't that great a time for me anyway, but still it was like watching them cutting up someone I knew.

Yours,
James D. Gray

I actually saw the Long Beach on Thrusday, from the Bremerton-Seattle ferry. I had forgotten until you reminded me.

Would be great to go back into the old OUTBOARD space again. I see her when I back in Bremerton every couple of weeks. Soon to be less and less of her.

Can anyone provide information on how were the missile magazine doors operated? Did they rotate, lift or fold in any way? Some pics would be nice too... Thanks in advance.

While not specific to the Long Beach, this video may help:

All Talos launching systems had the same blast doors that opened to allow the missiles to run onto the launcher.

The lower trapezoidal door opened first. It rotated down, hinging at the bottom.

Then the upper door opened, swinging up on hinges along the top. It carryied with it an extension rail that mated to the back of the launcher arm. This rail spanned between the internal rail and the rail section on the launcher.

The doors closed in the opposite order.

I have posted a series of photos illustrating the process here:

The former USS Long Beach (CGN-9) dismantling will be delayed again. She will go into drydock for hull inspection and paint, but then return to holding.

Exactly - her hull has not been maintained since her decom in 1994, needs a little work to ensure she can retain sufficient hulll integrity to continue to be stored

Unfortunately, photography is prohibited in the shipyard. There will probably be photographs taken by the shipyard photography people, but unless somebody releases some to the newspaper or our shipyard newsletter, you won't be seeing them.

Well I hope someone does take some! It maybe the last time we see her out of the water!

Why didn't I get an email or something?!?

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... eview.html

I haven't finished my Long Beach, matter of fact I was just staring at it yesterday. I put it on hold while I decided what to do about the Talos & Launchers that I couldn't get right.

I think doing the 1980 version would let me move on and finish it, seems simple enough

Anyone know when the Talos were deleted, how was the rear superstructure utilized during 1980? I'm thinking a huge area was devoted to the Talos missle and booster storage, would the Navy had just left the area unused until refit?

According to a former crew member who posted on my RCGroups build log for my CGN9 (and I am quoting from memory) "The Talos assembly room and magazine was converted into the largest GYM afloat...." I read some where else that Talos was removed around 1979?? and either USS Albany or Long Beach did the last live fire of a shipboard Talo's (the remaining stock of missiles where converted to target drones apparently with the last being fired early 2000's I think)

Cheers Bruce
