That would be very cool. Last thing I heard was that the money is basically there but the peruvians are stalling the issue.

Cant wait for her return.
Atleast i hope they refit her in the old dutch navy style at her return.
I say, she is the most beautiful dutch ship, and the most beautiful cruiser ever made.

A very striking ship indeed.
A kit in 1/400 would complement my Karel Doorman very nicely.

Hey gents,

You must have seen my recent post in the gallery, of a 1/350 version of this ship? I can assure you, this is currently only a prototype, but I'm working on it to be a complete kit next year.

I did not choose for 1/400, as the scope for other ships of the Dutch navy in 1/350 is much wider. And yes, I'm considering a 1/350 Karel doorman as well, but that will be a very long wait. As you may be aware, Ozmod Models from Australia have created masters for this too, but are scared away of bringing it into production, because of the sheer size and hence the costs.

Hi Maarten
Congratulations with the De Ruyter kit, it's looking fantastic so far. I'm saving the pennies for it's release, I just won't display it too close to my Karel Doorman.
I'd like to build a series of 1960's era kits so planning to get the Friesland and Van Speijk (need an earlier version of that one) kits as well.
Dave.

On a related note, I have acquired plans and am contemplating scratchbuilding the Hr.Ms. Eendracht, the original 1938 design for these ships. Very elegant 1930's cruisers they were, with two triple and two double turrets.

I would be interested in aquiring these plans also since I have a scratch building effort going on at this time also.

Mr. Morgan, still interested? I send you a PM, but I've had no reply yet.

How similar were the hulls as designed and as completed? I know the superstructures were redesigned, but was the hull the same shape and dimension up to the weather decks? Was any lengthening or reshaping done?

I have good news for you there: the hulls of the two ships were largely unmodified, only the majority of the planned portholes were never cut open.

And the 'Eendracht', which later became the 'De Ruyter' C801, and later still the 'Almirante Grau', was modified on German intructions to get a concave 'clipper bow' (Atlantikbug the called it in German), very similar to almost all German battleships and cruiser of that era. This was achieved by extending the forecastle deck by 1.85 m, and shaping the hull plates below to fair it in. From the waterline and below there was no change to the hull.

Beautiful ships, here are two pics of 1/1250 I have

Image

Showing the difference in the bows:

These were produced by Chris Daley of 1250ships, so he would clearly have reference material for any larger scale kit

Thanks, guys. I just got one of those 1:1250Models, the De Ruyter (801), off eBay. Nice looking cruisers, and I hope one day someone gives them the attention they deserve as a larger scale plastic kit, hopefully in 1:700. :-)
