Hi guys

Informal review on Aoshima's 1/350 Myoko

I've never been good doing reviews that's why i called it "INFORMAL" however it will give you an overall idea of this fantastic kit.

The kit doesn't look too bad at all. I have the Aoshima P/E sets coming as well and from what I can see by the photo's of them, the main one looks quite basic. Just as well I have about 5 kilo's of spare IJN p/e sitting around. Looks like those aircraft dolly rails will be a bitc h to remove and replace with p/e replacments.

I like it!

Yes, you can see the laterversions coming along there: triple 25 mm mounts were in there too.

I think the "braces" are actually waste water chutes to take the water out over the bulge instead of just running down the side of the hull.

Q: why is the thread title "Nachi class" when the lead-ship "Myoko" is being reviewed?

I took the liberty of fixing that and titling the original post so that I could figure out what model he was actually reviewing!

Do you know if the hull is scribed on the inside to convert to waterline? If so, does the kit contain a waterline plate?
Thanks,
Joe

Because the reference I grabbed (Conway's) showed them to be the Nachi class, not the Myoko class.

Great job, Jose. That is so helpful. I wasn;t going to go for her but now...........jeez. The detail is amazing.

The PE is for the cages storing extra floatplane wings, etc.

That could be too Gernot, at first i thought they were scupper pipes but i scratched the idea off after seeing quite few of them

There is nothing on the inside of the hull Joe it's completely blank, however if what you are looking for is a visible waterline that defines top and bottom halfs is right there on the outside. i took the liberty of highlighting it. HTH

BTW, the blister braces are actually scupper drain pipes. They conduct waste water from the point where the water is discharged over the side of the ship to the point where the water enters the sea. They keep the sides of the ship from being spoiled by water and rust stains, and also keeps waste water from being blown back onto the deck or into open side scuttles when the ship is underway.

Many thanks josé.
I have received my sampler while I am putting the finishing toutches on my IJN" Chokai" in August 42. With the Oyodo on the way the complete classes of IJN Cruisers can be built, and I will not complain. So far I already have built the Minekaze "Tone", then the "Chokai", I will go for the Mogami next. regards to you all from France, Jean Barby.

Hey you guys, the only drawing I have found of Myoko's AA gun positions is this one, and it just pixelates when I enlarge it. Do you think I am correct in the positions circled? It's basically pretty easy to up-date to a 44' and I have all the gear, but just checking!

L & W, also the Model Art volume on IJN drawings for cruisers has good overheads. Will try to scan something over the weekend. Gonna be busy though.

Calling Dan,
Does your book show where the Type 21 Air search radar was mounted on Myoko in 1944?

Hi Kym,
Not Dan  , but, as I have this book as well, I will try to give you a correct answer.
The type 21 Air search radar was fitted on Myoko during her first wartime modifications, between April and September 1943. The radar room was located in the foremast tripod in the former RDF room and the antenna was fitted atop the foremast, replacing the torpedo firing command station. The RDF room and antenna were relocated in the bridge. In 1944, the location of the antenna was in the same place.

Although, I don't have a good picture to show you, you can see clearly the antenna on Lars' excellent website, Marine art section (#76): http://www.aeronautic.dk/MarineArtgallery-T-Yuki.htm

Hope this helps

Gilbert :wave_1:
