Will, the barrels have a phenomenal rate of ware, at least the phalanx barrels do, and typically they can be changed out as a unit. So I am not surprised to see a gun without its barrels fitted, particularly if the ship is along side.

Hi All,

I am chasing some shots of the Gun direction platform on the Slava that sits just behind the CIWS deck on the forward deck house. I have some good shots from head on but i need some looking forward from behind. The internal platform is raised and I imagine there is a ladder access? It also looks like there may be a hatch below the actual platform.

Regards,

Andrew

On the forward deck house there are two ASW rocket launchers (RBU's) port and starboard. In between the RBU's is a "gun direction platform" which contains a manual gun site. I would like to find some pictures of looking at the back of this platform.

I guess you saw this shot already, from which you deduced the hatch at the rear: http://navsource.narod.ru/photos/02/169/02169099.jpg

There's also this of sister Marshal Ustinov: http://navsource.narod.ru/photos/02/170/02170028.jpg
Looks a bit different though, especially if seeing this overhead pic: http://navsource.narod.ru/photos/02/170/02170042.jpg

Hi Tim,

Great shots thank you. :thumbs_up_1: That last one in the series shows me what I was looking for, you can even see the wooden deck grate.

The Kashtan combined gun/missile unit looks like someone parked a Battlemech from the old Mechwarrior RPG & PC Game on the deck!! Good for saving space.. not so good if the system is knocked out then you lose 2 defensive systems instead of one..

Hi everyone :help_1: ,

A bit of a "nerdy" question.

I am planning, or at least trying to plan, the down pipes for Varyag. Would any body be prepared to hazard a guess as the diameter of the down pipes? I am thinking around 3.5 inches or 86mm.

Opinions anyone :anyone:

Andrew

I'm not familiar with the term. What's a down pipe? Can you describe it or point to it on a picture?

Bob,

I don't have a picture handy where I am now, but I am referring to the "drains" that run down the sides of the bulkheads that take free water from the upper decks down to the lower deck so it drains over the side.

Hi Andrew, I'd say your guess is as good as any. Personally I'd go slightly smaller, make it 75mm, and use 1mm wire on your model.

(Waits for Bob to quote the diameter from the shipyard manual :heh:  )

Bob,

The trumpeter PV kit is pretty much as per the picture on the left. No Globes and very similar platform and antenna arrays (given the scale).

Can post some scans over the weekend if you would like
