I am working on a 1/350 Udaloy kit. Did the ships have 4 or 5 bladed propellers?

Trumpeter supplies 4bladed props. There is photo on page 5 of this thread showing Admiral Vinogradof with 5 bladed props and a bulge aft of the struts. Trumpeter hull is nowhere near that.

Could this be a modification and the first ship of the class have different props and hull?

Hi Nikos,

never saw anything else than a 5-bladed prop on an Udaloy. The bulges aft of the propellor are not singular bulges... They're sort of connected with a smaller bulge (on both sides) near the centre of the aft stern. That, along with that more common half conical tunnel around the props. You can see a modification I did on my Arkmodel Udaloy stern to represent the bulges. Since it's a fully fibreglass hull I didn't do the modification to the tunnels though.
Trumpeter often just uses a general lower ship hull, in about all of their Soviet/Russian ships it has been proven wrong up till now.

If I see that now, I'm kinda disappointed that I left it so unprofessional. I found some much better filler material now to make such things. I guess it will stay like that though, I don't have an urge to really fix that...

Just kidding, sounds like the right choice. In the end, there are no real accurate plans of these strange structures aft and anything is an estimation at best. If you don't want to spend years on the model, it's a good choice to make it waterline (even then I think you'll spend a lot of time on researching the details and adapting them for your unit). Which ship did you choose to build? And are you going to adapt all the details for that particular unit or not?

I am building the Udaloy. My kit has the narrow heli deck. But I am adding the cross sword radars, even though I am not sure the ship had them at any timeframe of her life.

Not sure either, if I remember correctly, she only received the aft radar and VLS (or forward), anyway perhaps she received the the others later on.

Good luck with both of these ships, Udaloys remain some of my all-time favorites in the good looks department!

Just sorting out some of my collection of images from the Russian Navy and came across this one.
So just correct me if I'm wrong please. Is that some sort of prop wash guard next to the props. Similar to the Kirov Class Cruisers?
Also is that some sort of tunnel forming after the rudder to the stern of the ship or am I seeing things?

What puzzles me the most is that both the tunnel aft of the rudder and the propeller wash guards seem to be later modifications to the hull and not something that was in the original design. I would also love to know what is the purpose of these buldges. Perhaps they contribute to the reduction of the sterns motion? Or to the ship's handling?

I also noticed that at the midships section, right on the waterline, there is a bar(?) almost half of the ships length. This is something that Trumpeter does not include in the Udaloy kits.

There is a similar bar(?) added at the stern of the Sovremenys.

Perhaps Neptune or Bob Carr can help....

There is indeed a "bar" on the waterline of Udaloy. It's sort of a metal fender, it protects the hull from bumping into things. You can see similar structures on most offshore supply ships as well as most feeder container vessels. I had that on one of our LPG carriers as well. On the Udaloys it stops somewhere near the aft, where only a white water line extends towards the stern.

These bulbs look like they are added on later, but there is no real evidence of an Udaloy without them, so perhaps it was later added on the design before construction of the first unit, but after the initial design process.
Their purpose can only be speculated, I suppose it reduces vibrations and makes the propellor wash towards the propellor more efficient. That is however just a speculation.
The the tunnel is still doubtful. Perhaps to optimise waterflow/reduce vibration/noise. Or just to make it more easy to retrieve the VDS, with a stern current it's not always easy to get it underneath the stern crane to pick it up and bring it back inside (I assume, since it doesn't have its own propulsion, the sonar can end up below the ship's hull at low speed with a stern current, although I suppose an opposite cone shape tunnel would be better to guide it towards the centre of the stern). Also the Sovremenny doesn't have a VDS and the tunnel is also absent (she has an azimuth thruster on that place).

I'm currently working on trumpeters 1/350 Admiral Panteleyev. There are two rectangular structures on the bridge roof on both sides of a small lattice mast. This seems to be some kind of hatches, but I have no idea how it has to look in detail. Has anyone a closeup of this area or can say something about the purpose of these structures.
