Calling all Spruance-class DD fans

would someone please explain to my young, rusted, feable mind, what is the difference between DD and DDG, and what was DD 1?

DDs are (except for the upgraded and Spruance-class) regular destroyers, and DDGs are those destroyers that use guided missiles.

so what made bainbridge or whatever that one was so special to be DD1? Was she designated that during building (if so was nothing like her built before?), or was she already built and then they decided to start calling them destroyers?

She probably came about due to a need for a small, fast, *something* to protect stuff...*shrugs*

Hi Guys,
A DD is the USN designation for a Destroyer.
A DDG is a Guided Missile Destroyer. Once you realize that guided missiles were not around until the late 50's/early 60's, then you can rationalize that a DDG is the "Modern offspring", of a destroyer.
A Lay answer without a ton of rhetoric, but still meaningful.

USS Wisconsin and USS Spruance were both part of the Saratoga battlegroup. So they did steam together. Saratoga and her escorts stayed in the Red Sea while Wisconsin sailed into the Persian Gulf. Moosbrugger was with the John F. Kennedy Battle Group and likely never sailed with Wisconsin. So yes if you model Spruance you will be reasonably accurate historically.

I'm almost done with my super-quickie Cushing. I think it only took me about 10 evenings and 2 days off

I'm just waiting on some TMW railings, and I got to redo the bow numbering(got lazy with the gloss on ONE decal

). Was a fun, fast model to build(if you take the time to pre-fit the parts). Got away with 0 filler, only a little CA here and there carefully sanded on the corners/joints.

I did a search and didn't find any posts specific to the Spruance class so I thought I would start one.

I going to Build the USS Kincaid DD-965 for a coworker who served aboard her. I have Dragon's USS Cushing kit. What I need to know is, what color (mid 90s) were the Spruance class ships? The directions give a mix of Barley Gray 90%, Dark Gray 5% and Aircraft Gray 5% for superstructures and hull sides. Is there a direct match for this with out having to mix it? These colors are called out in Gunze brand and I was hoping to use Testors. Also, would Testors German Grey work for the Deck?

The modern Haze Gray is 36270. Model Master sells it as Neutral Gray (which was the underside color of WWII Army Air Corps aircraft). For deck gray I use 36118, Model Master Gunship Gray, which is a good match. Fire extinguisher red is a good match for modern anti-fouling red paint, but I use Insignia Red since it is easier to spray as a flat and is more toned down. HTH.

Someone should get that John Hancock out in decal. I have 4 of these spru cans in my basement, I think one will be the Hancock. I wish I had the stuff to make that decal

Served aboard a SPRUANCE - USS FIFE (DD-991).

Also embarked USS OBRIEN and CUSHING when I was with DESRON FIFTEEN; they were outstanding ships!

This photo taken in 1998 from the top of giant 80 year-old crane in Yokosuka that has since been broken up and replaced with a modern crane.

Hello

I am brandnew in this part of modelling. I just bought a 4 weeks ago my first USS Cushing of Dragon after 46years not modelling. I love this type very much and in the meantime I was able to buy via e bau a few more

Can somebody tell me what is happened with the USS Cushing I saw it was decommisioned somewere in 2005 but after that??

I hope that we will have all together a mutual contact

PS I live in the Belgium Ardennes far away from the sea but were 62 years ago was a hard fight with allied forces and the germans I just live in the centre were it was an d our village was made free by the british on her way down to la Roche to assist the usa soldiers

So I am starting on the Dragon Radford kit, but I am not doing the AEMSS - it looks ridiculous. After a pricy Sovremenny kit, I am trying to work with what I have - kit-supplied PE and leftovers in the parts box. Thanks for the paint info - I use a spray for the red I found in Home Depot called Colonial Red. It goes on smooth with no hassle. I'm looking to do the Hancock using the regular mast in the kit. Anyone have ideas for the white marks on the decks? I really am not looking forward to masking and painting those lines.

What I have done the round circles I used a white pecil followed the lines in/outside also with the lines so you know that you have to stay inside

I am bussy with the Cushing and have done the same and I quit happy
I have several more kits to go the Radford/Kidd/Ingersoll/Hewitt and Spruance so I can go ahead I love this type. Can we keep contact with the process of building please
