Sorry for the delay about your request for the plans I am using for the USS ORLECK (Fletcher class conversion).

The original Fletcher model was constructed from MaCandliss (SP) plans (4 sheets) in 1/96th scale (included hull lines, outboard profile, plan-view, and details sheet). For the Gearing conversion, I used enlarged outboard-profile and plan-views from the TIN CAN SAILORS press book on the U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. I purchased the book at the musemu when I visited the ship at Fall River, Massachusetts. They have an internet site and do mail order. I also relied on analyzing photos from NAVSOURCE.ORG, and many of the links there to various ship-sites. I think The Floating Drydock has Gearing FRAM plans, too.

Mr. Wizard.

Mr Wizard:
How are you doing? Thanks for answering....... I tried some search for the book on the Tin Can, but didn’t find. The author is Robert Sumrall? I read about the book at other places in the web, but would like to ask you if it has good plans ( review!!! :woo_hoo: )or if you think that would be better to buy some other at the Floating Drydock. I’m able to build the hull right now, but need plans to build everything over the main deck ........ what I mean is if the book has good plans, good side views....... my intentions are to build at 1/150..... Some plans I have are on the book Sumner-Gearing of Sumrall, and it brings just an outboard profile and overview for USS Henderson,FRAM Mk 1, but I don’t think it’s enough to base the building....
... I told that I have photos for the mast of a “Gearing”, Framed, sorry for the delay too to post them here.................... let’s go talking....... I’m still following the building of your “Orleck” and that is nice.....thanks for sharing............. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
My best wishes: Jimmy

I would go with the plans from Floating Dry Dock. Becareful because there is a FRAM 1A and FRAM 1B. One version has both 5inch-38 mounts forward (mounts 51 and 52), the other (like ORLECK) has one 5inch-38 mount forward (mount 51) and one aft (mount 53). You can see what FRAM plans they have by ships name and contact them if you have a preference between 1A and 1B, or go to NAVSOURCE.ORG and check out photos of the ship in their DESTROYER section.

Best of luck on your build! What type of hull construction are you going to use?

I used what is called a spanned-bulkhead method of construction. It uses frames with very few stringers and a keel. Thin (1/32) marine ply (much stonger than balsa) was carefully cut with scissors to fit spanning adjacent frames from deck edge to keel (half way onto each frame). This makes all the seams "hidden" when the inside is viewed. Nice clean look, and minimizes the chance for leaks. Bow and stern blocks were fitted and shaped after the sheeting was done. The outside was armoured with 3/4 oz glass cloth impregnated with epoxy (it is waterproof, most polyester resins are not). The inside then was soaked with thinned epoxy (lacquer thinner (in open air - not near open flame like gas water heater)), making it water proof too, not to mention very strong! Use a mask and gloves!!!

New photos of progress of USS ORLECK build should be up at Warship Models Underway in Gallery 50 (page 5, or 6?).

I should figure out how to post here, too!

Mr. Wizard.

Hi Mr Wizard!
Incredible is that I just found one plan for Gearing Framed, USS JOHNSTON DD821, in the G series .........
It has the Fram 1A.................... My hull will be some plank on frame, but it is not to put underway, just a static model, and so I don't mind with water proof care..........
I thank you so much for instructions!
Would like that you could post your progress of Orleck here too, but MWU is a good place too, so why doing a doubled show?
Brazil had 2 "Gearings" in the Navy, both Fram 1A........
My best wishes.............. Jimmy :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Anyone have a plan or series of photos that shows the locations of the exposed ventilators and ducting on the Gearing DD FRAMs?

Jimmy:

Here are some photos that show examples of the type of vents and trunking that I cannot find Gearing FRAM photos for. My plans do not show them.

The pics are Gearings but not the FRAM conversion ships.

That's because NavSource does not allow hot-linking to their site. Some of the same pictures can be found on the Naval Historical center, which you can link to:

I think that would be better if Mr. Wizard send me mail, attach the images showing the parts and circle then in red......will be easier to identify what he wants......... :cool_2:

Jimmy:

Its been awhile. I have linked a couple of Sean Hert's Photos from this site that show the vents that I am talking about. There is a lot of great-detail in his photos, but they only match about 1/4th of the vent fittngs that I have to install. I hope these attach okay. I could sure use some help in locating where they all go.

Under the 01 and Bridge decks

On the 02 Deck, just outboard of the the Aft funnel and forward of the red-shapes (looks like the head of a candy cane, gray of course)

Under the Aft Deck house on the 02 level

Launching and sea trials photos last weekend of my USS ORLECK FRAM 1/96th scale model are here:

http://wmunderway.8m.com/gallery50/gallery50d.htm

The model is about 25 years old and was converted (lengthened and widened) from a Fletcher DD that I scratchbuilt back then. The conversion took about 2 years of part time work, including building the completely new superstructure and masts and installing two motors and ESC's. The whole story starts on page one of Gallery 50.

I chose the ORLECK because the real ship exists as a museum ship at Orange Texas and has unfortunately fallen on very hard times after being damaged during hurricane Karina. I hoped to generate some interest in the ship. The museum foundation urgently needs to find a new home for the and needs support, monetary and otherwise. The latest news is here on the ship's website:

http://www.ussorleck.org/Press/PR08-02-21.html

Contact them if you have realistic ideas or can help in a substantial way.

Mr. Wizard

Thanks, Jimmy, for posting the pictures of the Gearing FRAM format. Finally something that shows what the radar antenna pedestals look like!

GREAT NEWS!!! It looks as though the USS ORLECK Museum Ship will be saved instead of going to the scrappers. Latest new from last weekend is at this hyperlink, with many photos, including some close ups of the propellers:

I'm working on a 1/700 Skywave/Pit-Road Sumner kit conversion into the USS Harry E. Hubbad DD-748 for a veteran who served on her (him? ) from 1962 to 1966.

I used the bridge section of the Gearing kit and JAG's PE from their FRAM II kit for the mast. I was going to change the stacks to the later tapered funnel version, as shown in an art print that the veteran had, but I think that that artist's rendition was incorrect. I have seen no photos of the HEH with the tapered funnels, at all, for any time period, so I'm going to stick with the original stack design.

I am using some parts from spare sprues of DRAGON and SKYWAVE kits. (Probably the same stuff, right?)

I am refering to the art print that the veteran has, NavSource.org, and a Squadron Signal Destroyer book. I am also refering to a beautiful 1/96 model of the USS Barton DD-722 that I found on Raven's web site.

PE to a 1/700 model is a hard job and fine to see that.
"Harry E. Hubbard" was some of "Allen Sumner" not to receive the FRAM II mod, nice model!! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Will like to see pennant number!!!
