Hi Guys,
I have finished the stern of the main deck except for the towing rig for an underwater listening device...or a trailing sound making device??? This will be scratch-built and installed later.
This is one of those times when I must have humility, as I was never a sailor and I'm just not sure what was towed behind these ships.
To finish the stern deck details accurately, I studied the Ray Bean photo disc of CFA DDG's, kept going back to what pics I have saved of DDG-22 specifically; then decided which details were accurate to DDG-22. Anyway, the work you see in these pics is a duplication of the deck details from DDG-22 and any ships in the class that were the same.
Here is the model before accurizing for DDG-22 in 1972. Much of the original surface detail has been removed.
Image

Image

Details changed:
The scuttles were more elevated than on the kit....elevated the scuttles and used GMM p/e; checked location with all available references.
Deck hatch with scuttle replaced using Evergreen plastic and GMM p/e.
Deck mounted vents and verticals were mounted similarly using styrene dowel(s).
Aft most twin bits are larger than all of the other twin bits on the ship, (all Adams DDG's same), and these were made from strip and round stock. The larger twin bit size was not large enough to use the L'Arsenal twin bits, (BB, CV and CB size), currently available.
The cylindrical base of the missile launcher on the DDG's with the single arm launcher was somewhat different from the earlier twin arm launchers, and had a band around the base with a raised lip around the perimeter. This detail was added on. On all Adams DDG's there was a rectangular shaped, "bent board", that was mounted on the deck at the aft/center of the base of the missile auncher; added on. The capstan molded onto the extreme aft/stbd was in the correct position, but it was easier to remove all of the detail in that area and replace it. The aforementioned tow rig was a box molded into the deck...not!
Additionally, there were some other superfuous details not really accurate so........off they went.
Finished with the aft/main deck till after painting.

Thanks for letting me share, Tony

You're doing amazing work Tony. Can't wait to see it in person.

If memory serves me correctly, the angled rectangular trunk that comes out of the aft part of the launcher is an emergency vent for the missile magazine.

Hi Guys,
Devin,
Now there's motivation to get this model finished!
T- 11 weeks and counting..........
I figure I'll need the last 4 weeks to rig, railing, mount to the base, do the water and weather. So, that leaves me 7 weeks for painting and the remaining mods/assembly. I've spent almost on average 3 hours per day on this...one would think I'd be further along!I started thsi project at earnest about 4 months ago. For a while it was s-l-o-w---m-o-v-i-n-g; what with a death in the family etc etc.
I want you to see this model finished Devin.
I don't want to come 3000 miles and have nothing to enter in the biggest IPMS contest/show this year.
My wife and daughter will be with me, but I don't expect them to hang around the L'Arsenal vendor table all day each day. This time is to be spent meeting modelers and offering, "good stuff".
I am a ships judge, so Friday eve will be spent with other ships judges. This will be my 4th year as an IPMS ships judge.
Can't wait!
Tony

Hi Guys,
Between Friday and yesterday, I got the 2 deck vents made up and installed. These two vents were molded into the starboard side of the aft superstructure, but were actually stand alone deck details according to the BuShip drawings, and only a very few actual DDG pictures.
These deck mounted vents go between the last third of the aft superstructure assembly's starboard side inboard of the Captains motor launch. These deck vents are almost hidden amongst the immediate area deck details and the Cap's motor launch; alas the reason for elusive detail pictures.
Simple but accurate....
Image

All day today, I spent working on the Mk13 Tartar launcher.....
Image

Image

Image
The Mk13 tartar launcher arm is .442" long in 1/350 scale. This assembly started with 2 WEM kit pieces, and now is enhanced by an additional 15 detail bits from strip styrene and rod.

My USS Sampson is almost done. The wake was just put on with Liquitex and hasn't dried yet. After it does, I'll brush paint the rest of the wake and waves white.

I just noticed that I forgot to add the ensign to it.

Tony,
The towing rig on the fantail is for towing an anti-torpedo noise-making device called Nixie.

Thanks Bob! It will look great on your Monterey model!

You've seen my Monterey before. The water distracts the viewer from the flaws in my model, I think. You don't have to worry about this with your excellent Monterey, however.

Apologies to all for invading the DDG forum with these two photos.

Bob W. has a great CVL model posted at Model Ship World: http://modelshipworld.com/phpBB2/viewto ... &&start=20

Hi Guys,
First things first!
Carl, your DDG-10 Sampson looks top notch. Well done Mister!
You did a complete job; build, markings, rigging and the Carl Musselman "sea-scape".
I'm sure it will be immortalized on the mw.com gallery soon.
BTW Carl,
Is there any important date you'd like your gallery submission to be shown?
If you let Sean know, I'm sure it could be arranged. The date of significance could of course be, (if one exists), a combination of the DDG-10 and history combined.
Bravo Zulu Carl.

(edited) I've decided to show before and after pics. The pics speak for themselves.(edited)The bridge windows and the bridge deckhouse roof bulwarks have been replaced with strip styrene of various sizes. The bridge windows/framework are replacing the raised squares molded into the original model with the wrong number of windows, (6 windows were molded in place on the directly forward face of the bridge instead of the correct number...5), and the raised windows just don't look right. The real ships bridge windows were slightly recessed in any case.
Here are a some pics of my last weeks efforts.......

Almost time to start painting,........this is when I'll regret adding on all of the deck detail beofre painting the deck grey.

Tony,

You know that your opinion, observations, and critizisms are valueable to me. Thank you, so much. I am happy that "you" like it. I feel that I have progressed exponentially in the last six months since getting back into this. The kits, the tools, the research, the details, the techniques, and this modeling community are all so, important to me in bettering my skills. I think that I must be a quick study.

The attention to detail that you have makes me think and double check at least twice before making my next steps in a build. The bridge windows and gun turret details on your DDG are prime examples of this.

And thanks for the clue about asking for a specific date for posting photos in the Gallery.

Tony,
Had you noticed the additional antenna stanchion that I put on?

Image

Image

It is almost impossible to see in my photos, but I put a little blue speck at the base of the antenna on the forward gun turret, just like in this photo.

Hi Guys,
Carl,
Now that you mentioned it.........yes on both counts. Adding detail is easy and rewarding; would'nt you say?
Specific ship photos available make the modeling journey a lot more interesting, don't they?
And then.......when the photo was taken.
Good Job Carl :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Guys,
Sweet Carl!
You did that ol' Dragon kit justice, I'd say!

The 1/350 project DDG-22 has a completed bridge facia, Okay, here is the bridge face before adding back all of the removed detail...

Hi Tony,

Just catching up on your DDG-22 build. A few posts back , you were talking
about a towed device on the fantail. That will be the T-Mk6 Fanfare, an
anti-submarine countermeasures system. Simply put, a real loud noise maker
towed way past the stern and activated either from Sonar Control or the
bridge. Was meant to draw an incoming torpedo away from it's intended
target. I was put in charge of the operation and maintenance of all the stuff
just behind that curved shield.

Pretty much a large reel with lots of black cable wrapped around it. Some
electrical boxes behind the shield, in front of the reeled cable and a small
cylindrical device at the end of the cable, ready to be played out, during
operation. Oh, just like toilet paper is supposed to be, the reel played out
over the top.

In ASW exercises, the Bennie Sweat's Fanfare always worked and always had
a fresh coat of paint (thanks to yours truly). Oh....here's a remember: the
whole system (reel, cable and device) was often covered with one of those
gray tarps, snugly fastened around the bottom (tarp courtesy of the bosun
mates).

Best regards,

Bill (former STG2, onboard Stoddert '71 to '74))

BTW, the pics are going in the mail tomorrow.
