A question on Waterhen concerning her aft funnel, the attachments shows what could be a flotilla band, there appears to be demarcation in colour, anyone confirm this?
Also, in reference to the other attachments, there now exists questions concerning her scheme reported a long way back, of particular her funnels and bow.
Previous reference had pointed to a slightly different pattern/colours on the bow, and 507A application to the funnels. at best it appears there may be a clip of 507A on the top of the fore funnel only, no other dark pattern presents.

Dick, you had made queries some time ago on my colour rendition on another site of Waterhen, fair comments.
What is your opinion on these questions.

I have finally received the scanned original ship plans from the National Maritime Museum - today for HMS Walpole ( Doxford , Sunderland ) -
for eventual building of the HMAS Vendetta as HMS Walker instead ...........

a few things have been made completely obvious through the changes to the plans , in 1928 and 1929 with refits added in pen to the original 1917 plans
Image Image

Firstly , the original 3 inch HA gun was replaced with a single 2pdr pom-pom AA gun
Secondly , the Galley Exhaust Pipe ( seen to the left of the HMS Walrus bridge - shown ) was moved and trunked into the existing exhaust pipe
at the front of the forward funnel ( see the photo of HMS Westcott - visible to the left side of the pennant number , D47 )
Thirdly , the Compass Binnacle was moved forward ( when the Destroyer had a Bridge Extension at the Front )
and the 9 Foot Rangefinder was moved aft - with the Bridge based semaphore moved to the bridge wings instead

just for information , for anyone wanting a Interwar or Early WW2 V/W Class Model
regards

The attachments of the RAN`s VW survivor HMAS Vendetta, for any members interested in her late war config.
Her GA in Nov 44, shows forward projecting equip? fitted to the Lantern Tower, but no detailed clear photo`s exist.
After many crosschecks, these are in fact small calibre weapons, no images can be found without the covers fitted, the type of gun is unknown, earlier images may suggest either single or double Lewis, but they could have been any of several different type weapon including 0.5 M2 water cooled Brownings.
Are there any opinions on these?

The photo looking back from the starboard wing would suggest that by Sept 45, the Lantern and structure had been totally removed, 4 aerials reinstated, and single 40mm Bofors replacing the single 2 pounders, not recorded in previous armament fits.
It is also possible that the string of D.C. reload pedestals, and the second trailing DCT have also been landed, but no clear photo`s exist to substantiate.

'm thinking about modeling Wolverine as she appeared during Operation Pedestal. I don't have a really good source for this. From what I've been able to tell on the web she had replaced #1 gun with a Hedgehog launcher and #4 gun with additional stowage for depth charges. I don't have clear photos of these. Anyone have any pictures to show what either of them looked like?

There are two or three pictures of her online. One after she rammed the sub and part of her bow is missing. Not sure about the dates of the others. It looks like she might be in a 3 (or maybe even 4?) color camo scheme. Anyone have additional info on that?

If this is covered in a published book I'd be happy to chase a copy of that down....

Man O War V & W Class has a good centre foldout of Wolverine, late 42.
The reported colours are 507A, 507C, MS2 and MS3.
A gun was replaced with the MK 10 Hedgehog, which has a removable forward cover, which seems telescoped within a permanent back cover, the IWM has a starboard quarter shot showing this.
Y gun removed for extra D.C. stowage, with what appears to be a lewis gun centred within the racks, unclear if it is a single or double.

Thanks. I've ordered a copy of the man o war volume.

It looks like there are quite a few after market things available that could help. I see Niko makes resin hedgehogs. AJM makes depth charge racks. There are probably others as well.

Is L'arsenal the only maker of 12pdr HA guns in 1/700?

Hi
Just to give an update that the Refit Bridge a lot of the V W Class were given in the late 1920's , and early 1930's is now available
to buy as a bespoke item - from Shapeways - and made by MicroMaster ( Simon )
https://www.shapeways.com/product/NMUZ5 ... li=ostatus
and the amidships twin-gun pom-pom platform ( as fitted to a lot of the ships - after the 3 inch gun was removed )
https://www.shapeways.com/product/KHK7L ... d=63366940

I have also listed a Director Control for this ship ( made by Shapeways ) for sale on ebay ( now sold ,sadly )
--
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382196469225? ... 1555.l2649

This is ( below ) the link to all of the V W Class improvements to the Showcase Models Australia Kit -
including Barr and Stroud Rangefinders in 1/350 scale
https://www.shapeways.com/shops/micro-m ... royers&s=0

These Parts are very detailed and benefit from the Highly detailed
Original Ship Plans for HMS Walpole of Doxford , Sunderland Shipyard in 1/46 scale

so if you want to have a V W Class Interwar or WW2 era ( excluding WAIR Class , of course ) , then this set will save you a huge amount of work
kind regards
David

Hi
If anyone needs a single 2 pounder pom-pom gun and mounting -for your Royal Navy Warship
this is now available from Micromaster ( Shapeways )

https://www.shapeways.com/product/J32SD ... areProduct

1/350 Scale Single 2-pdr (4 cm/39) QF Mark VIII x8.
Highly detailed replacement parts modelled from the plans in Naval Weapons of WW2 and many reference photographs.

Details include:• Rivets and hex nuts
• Open magazine loading case with visible shells/cartridges
• Training and Elevation apparatus
• These guns are designed specifically for 1/350 Scale
• Guns elevated at 20º, other elevations can be requested

This is useful to fit to the SHOWCASE Models Australia 1/350 HMAS Vendetta injection Kit
as a lot of the V W Class had the original 3 inch gun replaced by a 2 pounder AA gun in the late 1920's
or you can use it on any RN Destroyer , Gun Boats , Escort Ship or Cruiser that had these -
please also note
that when Trumpeter finally releases the HMS Exeter 1/350 kit - that Cruiser had 2 mountings of these guns in 1939
( I am certain that the Exeter kit will be a 1939 version first )
kind regards
David

This is another useful item for any wanting an Escort Destroyer - of the British Navy ( or any WW2 Navy )
that need the Model with Depth charge throwers fitted -

A set of 4 loaded and 4 unloaded WW2 Royal Navy depth charge guns in 1/350th scale

https://www.shapeways.com/product/JT65U ... d=63763463

I got the Designer to have 4 of them - unloaded , so you can fit a Brass Aftermarket Depth charge with etch end caps to it

I checked on the internet , and no-one makes this in 1/350 scale ( yet they do , in 1/700 !! )

This is the final addition for my 1/350 Showcase Models Australia V & W Class Destroyer to convert it to a minelayer -
which I had made by Simon - which can be fitted to the stern of the ship of your choice - and was made using line drawings
and an original old photo that I bought showing the stern of HMS Walker ( and the mine rails ) -
it also was made using the NMM Original Ship Plans of HMS Walpole for total accuracy -
it fits to the stern of the ship and has the mine groove , which the real ship had , plus the hollows in
the underside to allow light through the ships portholes ...........

This is a progress post for those interested in the Showcase Models HMAS Vendetta Kit in 1/350 scale ....
there is a big difference using the Alliance Modelworks 1/350 IJN Destroyer Bollards and North Star RN 1/350 Cable Reels - the model also uses the Micromaster Mine Rail Fairings made by Shapeways - to portray a Royal Navy Minelayer V & W Class Destroyer https://www.shapeways.com/product/CDAGN ... l-fairings
kind regards David Walker

Hello all, I am still building my 1/35 scale HMAS Waterhen - I am doing the bridge superstructure and am wondering about the lewis guns mounted on the bridge wings. Were they single or double and were they shielded or not. I can see that the Vendetta had shielded single mounts but am not sure about the Waterhen, many thanks, Will

No one can give you a definitive answer to your enquiry, no detailed photos exist.
Armament reports are wrong as many times as they are right, so until further evidence appears you`d be safe to fit either a single or double.

Your referral of Vendetta with single shielded Lewis, are you sure that you are not looking at a later photo of her fitted with an oerlikon? early shots show twin lewis with no protection.
The port bow shot of Vampire only, shows what appears to be splinter shields protecting the twin lewis mounts, these are probably fixed shields not fitted to the guns.

This Waterhen photo is interesting, little doubt taken from the bridge wing, what is that in the immediate foreground? wishful thinking or a lewis gun with radiator shroud removed? your call.

Great, thanks Brett, I shall go with the single unshielded lewis and yes you were right about Vendetta with the oerlikon. By the way I have been speaking to the Naval Historical Society of Australia and apparently they have detailed plans and nearly 60 photographs of the Waterhen. Sounds like a great archive for building. Did you ever access these and were they worth it.
cheers Will

Will, check your inbox for NHSA answer.
David, you may be interested in relation to your Sept 18 post on Shapeways single Pom Pom, after having a look, the guns on offer are in fact MKII singles, not MK VIII.
The MKII has a raised plate on the left of the gun body and smaller flash arrestor if fitted, the MK VIII had a different barrel and flash arrestor among other things.
Of interest, Vendetta in 44 had modified MKII`s fitted with large capacity magazine boxes and extra observer sight, before replacement with single bofors.
All the best.

G'day Will

You have had a lot better luck with the NHSA than I did. When I contacted them for plans etc on the ships of the Scrap Iron Flotilla (which included all 4 RAN V&W class destroyers) they responded they had no information and referred me to the National Archives of Australia.

BTW have you read the NHSA's book 'Scrap Iron Destroyers'? It doesn't contain any plans or details of refits etc but gives you a good insight into the workload of these old ships during WW2.

Please note - these unused and spare items have been offered for sale
at a bargain starting price of £ 1 on the UK ebay site , with worldwide sale available - for a 10 day auction starting tonight ( 15/11/2017 )
These are some great aftermarket Kit parts and these items would be exceptionally useful for any builder of this new 2017 V & W Class 1/350 British Destroyer -
or to super-detail - any WW2 Destroyer and the aftermarket Shapeways items would fit any inter-war or WW2 V & W Class Destroyer ( the exact details and 12 photos are listed in the item details )

Thanks for your information Brett , I decided to buy the correct AJM Models 1/350 2 pdr Pom-Pom gun set and it was fitted with a hollow 2 pdr pom-pom gun barrel to it ( it looks fabulous )
