Post fitted. Warramunga and Arunta in dry dock 1946. Warramunga is in her post war RN light grey colour with extra long black tip on the funnel.

Perth, If by the destroyer "with extra long black tip on the funnel" you mean the destroyer on the left, that is Arunta.
It is pretty clear from the photo alongside in Japan delivering Admiral Fraser that there was only one aerial insulator that particular moment. Looking closely at the 1947 AC Green photo of Brett's, two of the 4 aerials fitted then go into one insulator so, for whatever reason, I think probably max two aerials at the time of the Japan photo.

Brett, I think the aerial spreader at the end of the war was as I drew it. At that time I think it did not have that central vertical element rising above the horizontal top of the A that is there in your 1947 AC Green photo. If it was there then it should show in the photo alongside in Japan delivering Admiral Fraser. I think that was probably fitted very soon after the end of the war, perhaps during the 1946 refit shown in Perth Shipyard's photo.

Nice work Dick, I agree.
In the hi res 1945 wharf shot, it could be my eyes, but it looks like there may be a second wire on the lead end of the insulator, 2 cables.

Brett,

Have a look over on Steelnavy. Someone has just posted the photo you wanted to see - a clear broadside late war 1945 view confirming no vertical extension.

Best wishes.

Wow! what a great shot, and the first broadside I have seen for this exact period, thanks Dick.

Hey Dick, That is a very interesting shot you posted of Warra on WNSF, as you, I would like to have a better photo myself.
A new paint job and pennant change late 45 before refit, no doubt little known, well done.

I skimmed the rest of the thread and couldn't find an answer so I'm posting this.

Does anyone know if camouflage used by HMCS Huron in the kit colour plate below was used by her and HMCS Haida during the June 9th, 1944 Battle of Ushant? I'm mulling building a diorama that includes these 2 sisters engaging the German destroyer Z32 as what happened in the later part of the battle.

I have two 1/700 Trumpeter Huron 1944 kits as well as Dragon's Z31 kit which I intend to convert into Z32.

I just want to check a few things before building Trumpy's 1/700 HMS Zulu. Having already built Eskimo with the twin 4 inch and radars, I want to build the Zulu with the full complement of twin 4.7 inch guns, as she appeared early in the war.

Does anyone know when X turret was replaced with a twin 4 inch and when radar was added? Next, what camouflage would she have carried? Lastly is there anything else I need to be aware of in backdating the kit a little.

thanks
Mike

Zulu’s X twin 4” was fitted August 1940. Zulu did not receive radar until 1941.

Early war camouflage is tricky. I have no wartime photo of her prior to March 1940. The photo taken in March 1940 (and another in May 1940) shows her in overall 507B with pendant F18 in black, a white band on the forward funnel and masts white from the tripod junctions upwards. See the photo here:

HNSA has uploaded GA drawings for a generic Canadian Tribal: http://www.hnsa.org/wp-content/uploads/ ... tribal.pdf

Should help those who want to fix the bow sheer.

As anyone who has built, or is building, Trumpeter's 1/350 Tribal Class knows, the ships' boats are inaccurate. I Googled all kind of stuff, but no one considers listing the types and size of the boats used. I wish to replace the boats. Are any of Admiralty Modelworks suitable? Or any other manufacturer which is better than Trumpeter? :wave_1:

The Admiralty Modelworks boats look to be very good detail and accuracy, but they are not the correct size boats for the tribals.
It would depend on what subject you intend to portray, and of course what era, war or post war.

I can tell you that the Australian tribals were a different boat fitting to the British, they were fitted with 2 x 25` fast motor boats, I have scoped out availability of these boats and no company makes them as a separate item, although someone may be able to correct me on this.

Nobody seems to produce a seperate Admiralty 25` motor cutter either, these are the two cutters you will need for the tribals, along with a 27`whaler and 16` dingy.

The WEM Tribal kit has the correct boat set, but only one of each cutter, their N class kit has this set also, I`d say other kits they produced would also have this boat set.
You may be able to procure these particular boats from someone, other than that it looks like you may have to do some scratch building/ mods to your existing boats, the AMW boats may be able to be modified, but quite a bit of work.
Cheers, BM

I've got the WEM replacement boat set. They are much better than the kit boats, but I was hoping Admiralty made suitable boats as theirs are the best. Guess I'll just have to pimp up the WEM ones.

Just out of curiosity, did you get the WEM boatset as a separate item? it is very fortunate to have them.
It will be so good to have another company finally take over rights for WEM, they produced so many excellent items.

I think they were a separate item. A set of 3 replacement boats. But no PE for roof railing, or rudders, props, etc. like Admiralty Modelworks has. All that stuff can be sourced from other PE sets. :wave_1:

With the separate directors the kit will, as you say, be closer to Athabaskan(1) and also to Iroquois. Both completed with 6 single 20mm. Athabaskan kept them until Sept 1943 I think (at which point she received the lattice mast also).

So this thread has told me that my Trumpy 1/700th "Huron 1944" that I want to start is something of a sow's ear.
I'm inclined to go with dick's observation that the kit is closer to Athabaskan before her refit (and loss). Aside from using single 20mm AA (the kit has the tripod mast), what else needs doing/replacing for Athabaskan 1942? The ha/la mount, funnel height, anything else obvious?
I'd already assembled the hull and deck before reading this thread; so forget the sheer on the foc'sle :doh_1:
I'll get the colors sorted in due course.
TIA

If interested in the RCN tribal changes needed for the existing kits I have done them from both the ISW and the Trumpeter kits(both scales )

Last year wrote an article for RT IPMS Canada . I can E Mail a copy of the article as a PDF file if you contact me directly with your E Mail address.

PDF files cannot be posted to this forum.

I hope some of the canadians on this board might help me. I am planning to build the 1/350 Huron-kit as either Haida or Athabascan. I would like to know when the RCN changed their Tribals camouflage to the blue hull/grey upperworks that Haida is carrying now?

Also, does anyone know the FS or RGB colour code for those two colours?

I hope you can help me and thank you for reading this.
