Thanks. I've bought one so just waiting on delivery, if you dig up anything on the forecastle break let us know if it needs fixing. Regarding the hull hog, from what I can tell in the reviews the hull is molded solid with the waterline base. This seems to be the same construction as Dragon's Benson/Gleaves class, not sure if they use thicker plastic but they aren't straight either. Having said that, I don't recall a major pain fixing it. Time will tell for Fubuki.

There was some variation between ships in the curvature of the hull fairing connecting the forecastle deck down to the main deck. Having had a moment to look at the kit and some photos, I'd agree that the curvature is not as pronounced, or as long as with most Type Is, including Fubuki. Its shorter and more closely resembles that of Hatsuyuki and Murakumo. Aactually, its more like the Type IIs & IIIs. The Is seem to be more elongated.

Thank you for confirming (and sorry I didn't spot your reply sooner). I think building it up with one or two small triangles of plastic sheet should fix the issue without much hassle. :thumbs_up_1:

Hi, I am building the Yamashita Fubuki. I want to ask about the destroyer squadron/division identification makrking at the funnel. Is the two bands at the rear funnel as depicted in the box art correct for the time in late 1942?

Question about Hibiki and perhaps other ships in the toku-3 class.

From photos throughout the war, it seems like hibiki nevet painted over her funnel stripes, though it changes positions as time went on, probably because of reassignment. Her last config was 3 stripes on the rear funnel from a photo of her post war, though theres something weird about it because it seems a bit too thin to me, perhaps the americans painted those on?

Hibiki is the only ship ive obsered doing this so far, but i have a suspicion that other ships did this as well, what with the names on the side being painted over but not the funnel stripes, especially akatsuki, inazuma, and ikazuchi.

Whats up with that?

All DDs had the katakana symbols on the sides of the hull painted over at the start of the war. The funnel banding ID system for the DDs was retained in most instances, though individual ships, and divisions, changed the banding as the war progressed. Ships were lost, divisions dissolved or reconstituted with a mix of ships from different classes as the war proceeded.

Not sure about when Hibiki's last set of funnel banding actually appeared.

I'm building the 1943 Amagiri at the time she sank PT-109 and have some questions for the group about armament, specifically anti aircraft guns. From what I've been able to find out so far these ships added a lot of light deck mounted anti aircraft guns. But were these on the ships during this period or were they added later in the war? Any other thoughts you might have about this ship are appreciated.
Thank you
Dave

AA fit as of 8/1/43 is a twin 13mm on bandstand in front of bridge, and two twin 25mmAA on platform at front of funnel #2. The 25mm replaced the twin 13mm in those positions only a few weeks earlier.

Were the large numbers on the bow painted over at the same time as the katakana on the hull sides? Were these numbers pennant numbers as used in the west (unique identifier for the ship) or did they mean something different?

Vlad, yes, the numbers on the bows were present the same time as the kana and painted over shortly before the start of the pacific war.

The numbers were not pennant numbers but actually division identifiers. For example, Akatsuki, Inazuma, Ikazuchi, and Hibiki all had a number 6 on their bows as part of DDiv 6.

Thanks fuda, that explains why I've seen different ships with the same number, I was getting confused.

Doh, that's what I get for using this forum on my phone, I zoomed in far enough to read the text and missed the author. This place needs a mobile friendly mode :heh:

Edited above post.

Transferred message from DanK re Yamashita's Ayanami kit and their plans.

The link to the Hobby Search kit description with the "machine" translated text:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10420719

"Here's is a better translation, which is more straightforward. It's is clear they are going to delve into the IIa group, also possibly Yugiri, which introduced the revised air intakes under the funnels. The new intakes for the std. Type II looks pretty good to me, T-G:

- The type destroyer was a ship type that sought for the appearance of a modern destroyer.
● For this reason, as there are incremental elements added, there are many variations.
● It is roughly classified into three types, and it is called Special I, Special II, Special III type.
● Furthermore, in the case of Type II, depending on the shape of the `bowl shaped intake and exhaust cylinder`, furthermore IIA" Tide (Ushio) "," Odoro "," Akebono "," Ren (Sakanami) It is said that it can be divided into the classification called Evening Fog (Yuugiri).
● We plan to commercialize these variations as future developments.

● The forecastle (front deck) is a new mold and reproduces the inclination of the port side.
● The same type of ship that can be manufactured with this kit is Sotsubo, Morning Fog, Weather Fog, Spring Fog.

● Bridge bridge structure including Rajiri bridge newly become parts.
- Reproduce the bowl-shaped intake / exhaust cylinder of the front chimney and rear chimney.

Thx for posting, Steve. To be clear, this version is good for Ayanami, Shikanami, Sagiri, Asagiri, & Amagiri.

Just received this from Hobby Search, very nice molding and detail. There are some extremely small parts involved but recognizable as winches, reels, vents etc. I noticed the box art has a degaussing cable shown, but not on the model itself. The masts are very finely molded and petite. I'll definitely need the opti-visor on this one!
