Hello Lawrence & Hugh

Thank you for commments & picture. The 1948 photo is probably very near what I am looking for. McFaydens Barrossa is from 1947 according to a sign on its base plate. Not too much modifications should have been made between those two years.

Stockholm is rainy today saturday. Tomorrow we will hold the re-naming ceremony of an old Motor Torpedo Boat, T-56. If you wish visit her homepage, (just to make a small contribution, if somewhat off-subject).

Hello

May I under this forum add a question regarding material on the very good looking Battle class destroyers.

I am especially interested in the HMS Barossa (D68) as she was built by Mr Alex McFayden 25 years ago. I have seen the article in the June 1991 issue of Model Boats where a Mr Ray Bridgen included an article with McFaydens models of Barossa and Vanguard.

Does anyone have any material on the Barossa in the STAAG-gun & Squid-launcher version or knows good sources for such?

With best regards

Fredrik

Hi,

I have just purchased a book on the Battle Class Destroyers, by Patrick Boniface, ISBN 978 1 904459286, Maritime Books Publisher. P.138 therein shows HMS Barrossa with STAAG's and P144 shows the Squid (plus collision damage!). Great book on a great class.

Cheers,

Hugh

I have completed four RN destroyers and escorts, all in 1/600. I know I should submit entries about these models to the MW.com gallery.

1. AD destroyer HMS Barrosa, scratch-built with a hull modified from Airfix's Daring kit.
2. ASW frigate type 15 HMS Undaunted (F53) with a helicopter deck, based on a private resin casting of HMS Rapid by Joe d'Amato.
3. ASW frigate type 14 HMS Palliser, entirely scratch-built except for the bow from Airfix's Leander kit.
4. AD frigate type 62 conversion of the war-emergency destroyer HMS Troubridge, modeled on a hull modified from Airfix's Cossack kit. I based the model design on books. I'm considering modifying this model to embody research that Rob Kernaghan and I did at the Brass Foundry.

Incomplete 1/600 models:

1. RN-related: Canadian DDH HMCS Annapolis with a hull modified from Airfix's Leander kit.
2. Ikara Leander frigate (Leander class modernization batch 1), using Airfix's Leander kit.
3. Exocet Leander frigate (Leander class modernization batch 2), using Airfix's Leander kit. My first attempt at the hull now is the hull for HMCS Annapolis.
4. 1954 Sea Slug cruiser design, with a hull modified from Airfix's Tiger kit.
5. 1950 cruiser-destroyer design, with a hull modified from Airfix's Daring kit.

White Ensign Models seem to be phasing out their 1/600 detail parts, such as boats. That may force me to other scales for future models.

Would be great to see these in the gallery, some very interesting subjects from a much neglected (model-wise) era for the Royal Navy

Looking for any material on the Aussie Battle Class ships, I have a line drawing as built, twin 4.5 mounts enroute, and a few pix, not much to go on. My two rare Frog Battles require the very best info I can amass. Any pics or info anyone has on these magnificent ships would be very much appreciated. Book suggestions welcome as well....

I was under the impression that they carried two Squid mortars, but the kits show 1. Do the Aussie ships differ in their secondary gun arrangements? When did the RAN adopt the red roo on the funnels?

If this goes well, my ISW Zulu will become Warramunga or Arunta. The Australian Navy has been overlooked for far too long....

Any info or advice appreciated.

Do you have the Friedman British Destroyer book. There are two nice photos of Anzac, one a close up of the bridge and forard guns. It says:

1. More Beam 41ft
2. Mk VI Gun Mount and Mk VI Director
3. Three STAAG's (One between tubes and two aft)
4. Six Mk VII Bofors (One before and two abeam bridge, two abaft funnel and one on the quarterdeck)
5. Two pentad Torpedo Tubes
6 One single squid aft.
7. Bridge raised to clear turrent
8. Funnel cap

There are also 3 pages, mostly concerning their careers and two photos in the new John English Obdurate to Daring.

Warship 2004 has an article about the ships named Anzac, including HMAS Anzac of the Battle class. The article has several detailed photographs.

Hi Terry and Michael,
Thanks for the tips, I'l have to see if I can track down copies...I'm trying to determine whether to build the bridge up from the bottom, or just add a deck to the top.. Pics are few and far between with these old girls. Off to the library, see if i can dig up old copies of Janes, and Fridmans book. Thanks again!

OK, now I have 3 FROG Battles, Anzac Tobruk, and I'm thinking Barrossa. Does anyone make a double bedstead radar and Seacat in 1/300- 1/350?

:-) I love this kit.

Hi
I have just discovered your forum, as I was looking for a scale model kit.

I am ex Royal Australian Navy and served in both of our Battle Class Ships - HMAS ANZAC & TOBRUK. I am happy to answer questions or send photos pertaining to either of these ships to anyone who is wanting information.

I am also chairman of the national RAN Battle Class Association.

Would anyone know where I would buy a scale model kit of any of the Battle Class Ships?

Regards, best wishes and Happy New Year
Joseph

I found this image of HMAS ANZAC at NARA taken on 1 September 1952 while she was off Korea. I thought it may be of interest.

IN 700 scale the German resin company HP does a number of Battle Class, 11 of them in fact.

http://www.hp-models.com/index.php?opti ... tstart=100

I have one of them, which looks very good, though I haven't built it yet.

I think there are other, older kits in larger scales, but off the top of my head I can't remember exactly who does them or what scale.

Nice photo Rick.

Mike

The December 2009 issue of Model Boats Magazine has an article on converting a Deans Marine 1/96 British Battle Class kit to the Oz version.

http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=5765

There is also a very old Frog Plastic Kit mentioned earlier in this thread.

I tracked down three Frog 1/301 scale Battle Class Kits. I am finishing up the first HMAS Anzac, and preparing to do her sister next. They can get pretty expensive on ebay, I paid $50 US for the last kit, albeit in excellent shape for such an old kit. With a little photoetch, and some research on the differences in the Australian ships, it can be made into a grand model. I'm currently stuck on the cowling featured on the RAN ships. They were the most elegant ships I have ever seen. Hope this helps!

Airfix did a Daring class, but I don't recall a Battle?

Cheers,

Rob

You are in luck, sort of. These details for HMS Camperdown are illustrated in Edgar March, British Destroyers (1966), pages 514-517.

Yes:
Sixteen "early Battles" were authorized in 1942 for the RN.
Two of these "early Battles" were later sold to Pakistan. One of these "early Battles" was sold to Iran under the Shah.
The RAN built another two to this basic design, as (at the RN's behest) the test ships for the 4.5-inch gun turret Mark 6.

Eight "later Battles" were authorized in 1943 for the RN, with the USN gun director Mark 37 and an improved combat information center.
Four "later Battles" were modernized as fighter direction ships during 1960-1962 and served until 1968. My scratch-built 1/600 HMS Barrosa shows one of these modernized units, HMS Barrosa. My experience in the researching and the modeling of Barrosa, and the recognition my model has received, make this model my all-time favorite!
One "later Battle" was converted to a test ship for sonar.

A design for new destroyers for authorization in 1944 for the RN was first designated as the "1944 Battles." This design was re-designated the Daring class.
