.

I do't really know the best place to ask this. I had thought of trying "U-Boat.Net" - but it is a bit inpenetrable for a "beginner", so ;

The Allies used mostly white/very pale colours paint schemes for much of the war (Western Approaches/"Thayer") on the basis that a white ship would show up least on a moon-lit night from a submarine.

So, presumably, the same should/could have been applied to a U-Boat (or where appropriate a USN sub) when attacking on the surface at night.

I cannot remember seeing any such paint scheme - although the U-Boat commanders must have noted the colours that escorts were painted.

I can understand that in the Mediterranean where subs could occassionally be spotted at periscope depth this might not be acceptable, but otherwise was it ever considered.

(RN subs do not seem to have made many surface attacks)

I think several were painted with white towers in northern waters, to blend in with the ice. hth

I’m wanting to convert the Revell 1:72 Type VII U-boat to a Flakboat. Am I safe in assuming I can do this with the Type VIIC/41 kit, or do I need to use the plain VIIC version?

Nice link, thanks. I have this Humongo German sub book that has a really cool flak boat image, very unusual, and that's what I want to do.

I commented, but had failed to log in; I guess it'll turn up later. (See above.)

While I realize full well this is not a type VII related question, Does anyone know of a decently priced large model of the type XXI? I have the Revell 1:144 kit, and while not bed, I'd like something larger.

Thanks fellas,

Hi, I'm doing the Type VII D mineleger, in 144 scale from Revell. I could use some good photos, especially of the loading hatches and opening for the mines.

Thanks

Hi veliko_pile,

I found one picture showing the open mine shafts:

My favourite site regarding U-Boats didn't have much in this case (look for U-213 - U-218)

cheers!

Hi,

Just thought I would ask if anybody thinks its bad to display the mirage 1/400 u boats next to the new 1/350 scale types coming out. I have alot of the mirage ones, and I love them. But there is so much available in 1/350 now adays.

I have the same frustrating dilemma. Unfortunately the scale difference between 1:400 and 1:350 is too big. A Type IX in 1:400 is just as large as a Type VII in 1:350. Side by side they almost seem the same type at first glance, while in fact the Type IX was of course much larger than the VII.

I have decided to get rid off my Mirage Hobby kits and set my built ones in a separate corner. But I must admit I'm eagerly waiting for some kits in 1:350 that already exist from Mirage, like the Type II and the Type IXC/40 with 'Schnelltauchback' (Quick diving foc'sle), the RN U types and the Orzel...

Ok. I went off the deep end and just bought 6 1/350 scale u boats. I got a mix of type VII and type IX. I split them between Hobbyboss, AFV, ROG, and Mirage so I can compare them lol. Talk about an impulse buy.......

I got the 1/350 type VII's and they are awesome. And the type IX's.... Im thinking about re-doing my 1/125 Type VIIB and putting all the hull details (welds etc.) Anybody got a good suggestion for that? I was thinking about using stretched sprue. I was also thinking about the big opening in the keel that is absent on the 1.125 mold and am not really sure where to start on that. Also, I have the cut away U-47 and an extra U-99 hull, and im planning on using the early type VII tower from the cut away and filling in the side so that I will have both styles in full hull.

So in 1/350 scale, who has the more accurate size in conning towers? AFV or Hobby Boss?

I just received this kit. I would like to do a diorama of the U-81 in kind of a 3D diorama. I have never done a submarine kit before. Looking at PE I know Griffon makes a great PE Set but everyone is out of stock. Eduard makes a set for the VII D, could I use that set? Also does anyone know if anyone makes custom decals for the boat's markings? Here is what I need in 1/144 scale.

A young member of my household is working on the Revell 1/144 Type VIIc. He is going to do it up as U-96 early war. After reading through this forum here is what I have for paint colors. Unfortunately there was a great looking link but it was not working.

The wood decks should be Schiffsbodenfarde III Grau.
Inside the tower is Dunkelgrau 53.
Hull above the water line in Dunkelgrau 51.
I do not know the anti fouling color. And what about the deck gun and various pieces of equipment on the tower? Ad is there a boot topping color?

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Hi Gabriel,

The hull below the waterline is Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau ("Schiffsboden" means ship's bottom in German, and "Farbe" (not farde) means color...). These ships never had a boottopping painted, and were NEVER painted red or so, unlike many color pictures in popular (American) books on German submarines...

Incidentally, the boottopping of German surface ships was also Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau, and never black as mostly used in other navies.
