Just looked at the review of the Arkmodel 1/48 Type 7 U-Boat at HS.
Did I miss this as I havnt seen anything about it anywhere?
And it looks awesome..
Anybody know where it's available?

I am seriously thinking about getting one of these to go with my 1/48 aircraft.....

So I saw a post on brit modeler I think, where 2 guys were arguing back and forth about using the type IX sail on a type VII hull, saying that the late type VIIs had the same sail. I domt think this is true. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

In side profile the superstructures (Turm in German) of Type VII and Type IX boats (and the Type X and Type XIV too for that matter) may look very similar, however the width of the Type VII Turm is always smaller than the Type IX, X and XIV counterpart.

In top view the forward part of the Type VII sail has an oval shape, whilst those of the other types have a circular front but straight sides.

So yes, very similar, but with a distinctive difference. In 1:350 or smaller one might modify a Type VII Turm into one of the others, taking care of the added width (about 1 mm in 1:350) and the subtle shape difference mentioned above.

Practically I don't believe a Type IX sail could be fitted to a Type VII hull as the latter is simply too narrow to adapt to. The other way wouldn't be feasible either, as the wider deck space allowing for a broader sail would make use of a the narrow sail illogical.

Thats the same thing I was thinking, but these guys were arguing about it pretty strongly. I did notice that the one type VII I have from Mirage hobbies has the type IX conning tower, it is the type VIIC turm IV so I hope all of their type VIIs arent like that. I really wish Hobby Boss would give the variety on their 1/350 Type IXs that Mirage has in their 1/400 collection.

I dont know where i should post this. So i post this here. I am the biggest soldering noob out there. I have searched a long long time for a replachement of the Wintergarten for the Revell 05015 - 1/72 VIIC UBoot Kit. I was not lucky. I recently discovered the possibilities of 3D printing. Thats why i created a "Wintergarten" in a 3d program and sent it to print, and i was successfull.

It looks amazing very thin and fragile. For those of you who also want to replace the 2 piece thick one from Revell here is the link to order one for yourself. I also put the 2 Isolators for the turret back side on it.

Nice work! I'm working with a friend on some 3D printed parts for PT Boats. How are you finding the smoothness of the print? Are you seeing any strata anywhere? I'm interested to see it printed in brass as well. This is the future of modeling. Great idea!

PS. Please share the brass print with us as well. Would love to see that.

its very smooth. No strata visible but you can slightly feel them. I am confident that this will be no Problem with primer and paint. It's printed in FUD (Fine Ultra Detail) Material, but with the new FXD (Fine Extreme Detail) Material from shapeways it should be possible to increase the layer count, to get a more smoother surface. But also an increased Price.

Yes i will post the brass Version to, but its still in production. The brass Version also lacks the very small parts like the Antenna cable holder and the holder for the Torbedo reload linkage. but these parts can be added easely later. And it don't have the Isolators, because it would be too expensive to add them.

So am I the only one that noticed that Mirage uses the same turm II and IV towers for type IX and Type VII in 1/400 scale?

Hi Dave today i received the brass Print. I am satisfied with the result. It's a very good print. It's very stable and can be bended a little.

That's amazing Thomas! Are you going to release the first rendering in the new higher resolution offering? I would like to order a set and would like to try that newer printing option.

I am sorry but i can't. The Bounding Box Settings for the the new FXD material are to small.

The Maximum bounding box is 50mm x 50mm x 200mm but the Modell dimensions are 5.344mm x 5.384mm x 2.716mm therefore it's not possible to print it in FXD. I could scale the Modell down but then it will not fit.

So the only possible print Option is FUD.

Today i have cutted the brass one from the Frame and glued him on the conning Tower. And here is the Result.







i like it. And it fits very well.

Does the bottom ring on the printed one mount on the gun deck or do you cut the rails off of it?

the Ring is only for Protection against breaking. The Wintergarten needs to be cutted off from it.
