On the Improved Los Angeles class, do the bow planes retract into the hull? All the slipway photos on Navsource I've looked at look like they weren't installed yet? Or do the planes actually seal up tight when they close?

Dragon 1/350 scale kit has you cut open an extremely long openning for the bow planes... but then again they come with a set of HUGE bow planes which were for a previous kit that I think was completely wrong at the time.

I'm also interested in the anechoic (sp) tiles, were they installed after launch because I see them on some older L.A. class boats but I see the newer boats on the slips with red under hulls? Any input on this?

Thanks as always,
Jeffcsr

The tiles were also mounted underneath the hull, you can see them in photos of the Greenville that were posted after her collision with the Ehime Maru (fourth photo down on her Navsource Page. I don't have any good drawings of the box planes on the later boats, but it's clear from photos of the same boat that DMLs depiction of this area is off.

Thanks Tracy! I didn't catch that they still painted the lower tiles red.

I know it's 'apples to oranges' but the Virginia class SSN looks like the bow planes (or Box planes if I'm missing the terminology) extend straight out from the hull (like a stilleto)... Not folding out like I am wondering if the Los Angeles class does... Do you know if the Los angeles class frt planes fold out or extend staright out from the hull? There are no pics on Nav source showing the planes. I'm half tempted to just model an older L.A. and mount the original style tower planes... but man I like that new style prop that comes on the Dragon USS HAMPTON kit.

Jeffcsr,
I was on the SSN-757 which had bow planes and they did not fold into the hull, they were retracted and extended straight in and out of the hull after they were leveled to zero degrees.

688-711 were originally commissioned without hull tiles. I was on MInneapolis-St Paul when they were installed.
688-699 were commissioned without a towed array hump. This was added during the first yard period. USS Cincinnati received her retractable towed array in 1981. The attached picture was taken on Alpha trials. You can clearly see there is no towed array hump. Again, I was attached to thie Cincinnati when this mod was performed.
