The I-19 more than likely at that time had very worn (dark)gray paint overall, with a wavy black painted hangar in front of conning tower. The top of the conning tower was painted black also?? The deck was a very faded black/wood color showing almost no black stain at all. I believe it also had white ID panels painted fore and aft.

I'm not at home at the time, but this would be my take on it.

Go check out Internet Modeler archives September 2000. There is a great build of the Nichimo 1/200 I-19 with ID stripes on deck.

Thanks Bob, wouldnt have found that myself. Just a question, is this the only source for the existance and placement of the white Id stripes?
I know that they were introduced around this time, but I havent yet seen any references to them being on the I-19, and photos of this sub a rare to say the least.
I guess I dont want to put them on just because someone else did. I intend to supply some supporting documentation on the sub with my model when I enter it, to justify the paint and markings, and while I have found some stuff on the white id lines, none of it mentions the I-19.

There are very, very, very little photos of IJN subs showing the ID stripes. I would say, it is very probable that I-19 had them. There are paintings of I-19 sporting them, but these are based on assumptions.

What you must be aware of is that the number and exact placement of the stripes was rather individual. I have seen pics where the stripes on the rear deck were crossed instead of parallel. Furthermore, on some boats the stripes were painted, on others they consisted of white fabric attached on both sides of the deck. There are also "mixed" solutions, e.g. painted on the forward deck, and fabric on the rear deck. The advantage is: you do what you like and nobody will be able to say it's wrong.

I have a small number of example pics on my harddisk, but I'm in the office now, will post them tonight.

Those photos were most helpful, and after some thought I have decided to model the I-19 with some fabric ID stipes on the deck rather than any painted on.
One last question, and I doubt anyone can answer it, but is there any log or record of aerial recognition stripes for IJN subs. I would love to work out what I-19's markings would have been.

For those of us still pining for a large scale IJN sub kit, I was told by a trusted source who attended last week's iHobby Expo that Lindberg is currently re-working their tooling with plans to re-issue the I-53 in addition to the I-20 kit that has been held after the earlier debacle with that sci-fi Godzilla sub. As the old saying goes, I guess time will tell.

Back on thread, regarding the I 20, it would be interesting to know how the pocket sub was secured onto the deck: I wonder if it was just tied down, or if there was a more elaborate mechanism

I called Lindberg a couple of months ago and was told that at the end of November (2011) the President of the company would make a decision on whether or not the 1/72 scale I-20 (C1 class) was a "go". Have you heard anything alongs these lines? Can you give any further details about what your source at the ihobby expo had to say?

Haven't heard anything about the I-20, only that the I-53 tooling was back in the States & being corrected, whatever that means.

I am encouraged by the fact the Lindberg has just re-issued the 1/20 scale Cris-Craft Constellation yacht (limited edition?). Like many of their kits, it has been advertised in catalogs and websites for the last couple of years. Maybe this is a sign that finances are improving for them and any new tooling stands a better chance of getting the green light.

On this excellent thread, the magazine with I-19 submarine cover art painting has been referenced but not posted, so I attach it here. I am currenty building the 1/200 Nichimo I-19 and want to confirm something I have read. The upper hull gray should be the "IJN Yokosuka Grey", right?

Also, it would be great to see some photos of finished I-19s.

Not sure about the Yokosuka Grey... I-19 was built at the Mitsubishi Naval Yard, but her home base then was Yokosuka, where she was also overhauled in drydock in March/April 1942.

Anyway, I think that after a couple of months of action, you would simply see a heavily weathered dark grey.

This pic shows her at Yokosuka in July 1942, some two months before she sank the Wasp:



Note the black upper side of the conning tower and the black hangar roof with wavy edge.

The black probably extended over the frontal hangar door, unlike the cover art of the magazine.
