I'm in the planning stage of doing a scratch build of the USS Ibex. I believe she was a liberty ship turned in to a tanker. Any help in where I should go in gathering information, plans, and photos would be very welcomed.

A bit pricey, but Liberty tanker plans are available through MarylandSilver.

Are you doing a scratchbuild or a conversion? It should be pretty straight forward to convert either the 350 or 700 scale trumpeter kits into a tanker.

Plans for the Liberty tankers are available from the Smithsonian. The Maritime Administration Collection of Ship Plans (1939-1970 ) You can get a profile plan for $20.

The Maritime Commission website linked to above has about 20 pictures of Liberty ship tankers. Looks like they still maintain their hatches and cargo gear...not much different from the dry cargo versions.

Hi there; I am in the situation of reading a very important book to builders of mainly "VICTORY" and T1,2,3 type TANKERS too. This book does mention the ARMY conversions in passing only to also mention many VICTORIES that saw the same fate. The book is "VICTORY SHIPS and TANKERS" by L.A.SAWYER and W.H.MITCHELL. I do have to note that to get my grubby shipbuilding hands on this publication I had to depend on a interlibrary loan. The copy I have is from the ILLINOIS STATE LIBRARY. It,s not in the greatest of shape. If you find one grab it! I only wish I knew of a used bookstore here in south/central TEXAS that would have something so (TO THEM) esoteric published work. I recommend IT. The pictures inside show some of the variants ship such as the KINGSPORT(T-AG164) a sat-com ship and the AP3 type VICTORY ship SKIDMORE VICTORYto the USNS RANGE TRACKER(T-AGM-1)and the ORIENTAL COMET (the JACKSON VICTORY) as a container ship! oh! one more ,the ALCOA CORSAIR a VICTORY of the AP7 type as a cargoliner! This book is certainly opening my eyes.I would do liberty stuff but as a retired mariner and engineer I don,t care for the fact that many were lost due to bad design and construction. Many broke in two just in front of the wheelhouse due to broken welds or stresses that WEREN,T figured into the designs commodore 4

Hello all..............

Sorry to butt in but I've a small query that I can't seem to get an answer for by searching the net in general - and I have tried!
This site would appear to be my best option so I'll give it a go ;-

I'm based in the UK and have just gained the Trumpeter liberty ship Jeremiah O'Brien. Although I've modelled for many years this is my first ship since I was a nipper, and also I'd like to have a go with the etch fret upgrade - and have sourced two available to me in the UK. Namely the Eduard and the GMM set, the cost of both took my breath away - this is new to me you understand? - But the problem is which do I go for? - The GMM set is ten pounds more at just shy of 40 quid [gulp], but it does come highly recommended the Eduard is cheaper obviously, but I can see several noticeable ommissions.................. truthfully I've just confused myself and could really do with a bit of friendly advice here............. Anybody???

Cheers all ................ Andi.

Haven't seen any of these but I feel obliged to mention the existence of another set. L'Arsenal 350-02. Same price as the others but it contains both PE and resin detail parts....
I have their 1/700 Liberty PE set and it's excellent. L'Arsenal does sell to the UK.

Tom's Modelworks also has, or at least had, a PE set for the 1/350 Liberty. It is less expensive than the GMM fret. I used it and was very satisfied.

I am currently installing the Tom's set (now under a different owner thankfully) and agree it is great and a good price. Those two large PE parts that runs along the hull and the superstructure are too short. But the kit is fine without that PE part.

You mean that section between the main deck and the lifeboats? Yeah, I didn't use that either. I didn't even try it as the kit's plastic looked OK to me.

There's some photos of crating and shipping operations on this page of an aircraft forum that might be of some use to people here.

Some great photos there! P-38s aboard a T-2 tanker, and a Victory ship (Pelican State). Some of the P-47s seem to be on a small carrier deck. The pic of a Moore-McCormack freighter is probably pre Dec 1941, judging from the neutrality flag on the side. Some of the aircraft are pretty early too. Is that first one a P-36?

I feel like using those pictures for something, I just really need to know for what though. Any ideas? (I'm sorry it's getting a little off topic).

Also, I know this is the CASF section, but does anyone know how PT Boats were shipped? I have pics of PT-109 on a tanker, but not enough views are shown.

Ahoy Modlers

I just noticed this thread on libertys and victorys I was a former crewman on board the U.S.S. OXFORD AGTR-1 A converted Liberty ship I was in 1st division 2 class Boatswain Mate. we were Decommissioned on December 19th 1969 in Yukuska Japan. Anyone out there tasckeled the bluejacket victory ship I am doing the finishing touchs on mine as soon as I get a digical camera i will reveal some photos of her. Instead of the paint Schedule on the plans I painted mine as the MOORE McCOMACK LINES the S.S. MORMACKFIR all Machinery gray hull and deck with white deck houses. Yellow funnel green steamship band all kingpost and boom are white as well. this kit took me almost 7 years to build every day for that time frame a little here and a little there useing high power magnifiers make the difference to pay attention to detail. I proved alot is not lost at 1/16th scale every part has been researched out and incorporated , all I need now is a 50 man crew nad she will come alive.

Fred - I've recently gotten the Edmund Fanning project underway again, and after examining the photo you provided, I realized there was some damage to the stern area. Look closely at the 3in gun tub and the structure in front of it. The gun tub has a large dent in it, and it looks like there was a life raft attached to the structure next to the 20mm gun which is now cut in half and the railings are all messed up. I can find nothing related to a collision - any input? It will certainly make for an interesting build now...

My first thought was a cargo handling mishap, but upon inspection of the picture, it's too far aft. They must have had a minor collision either with another ship or a dock structure. The dent in the 3 in tub certainly looks like it could have been made by another ship's stem.

Ok, so here's a question for you all. I am building the Trumpeter 700 Liberty ship as the civilian Ampac Nevada and am at a complete loss as to what to paint the decks. The only photos of civil Libertys I have found so far are of models, and the variation is staggering. The three most common variations are all decks rust red, all decks dark grey, or rust red superstructure decks with dark grey main deck. I don't have any information specifically regarding Ampac Nevada, but I am looking for general guidance on what color or combinations of colors is probable for a post-war Liberty ship. It's a real puzzle to me, so if anyone has an opinion I'd love to hear it!
