The NS Savannah, the first Merchant Nuclear Ship, 1958-1970. The NS Savannah is the first ship model I have ever owned. I will attach a picture. I have also visited the ship about one week ago (4/4/12) It is very interesting and is currently being restored. More info on it at:
http://www.nssavannah.net/

Also, I am Adding some pictures of her at sea, her in the Reserve fleet (be ready to be shocked on how bad the reserve fleet treated her) and how she is now.

NS Savannah is one of my favorites - a really beautiful vessel with very pleasing lines. There are a couple of older styrene kits available and a larger scale wood kit (by Bluejacket or Scientific?). With enough work, the old Ringo styrene kit in 1/350 can be improved significantly:

This is a unique vessel and it is good to know that it has been preserved.

Cheers,

Bill

I am glad someone else is interested in it soon! Sadly though, it is in a little disrepair since it was in the James River Reserve Fleet and was left with windows and doors open, but a lot of progress has been made. If there is a proper forum for it, I can post pictures that I took on my tour. Also, it will probably not open to the general public until 2030 at the most probable earliest since they will probably decontaminate/decommission the reactor then.

The NS SAVANNAH will be open for visitors on Sunday, 18 May. There will be a man-made pond on the pier suitable for operating R/C boats or ships. The pond will operate from 1000-1530, same hours for visiting.

For more information, see:

Dear Folks,

The ship was open for visitors from 1000-1530. The RC boat pond was smaller than expected so only shallow-draft and small boats operated. Good time to take pictures. The NS SAVANNAH Association will have a pond next year and the date should be the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend.

Dear Folks,

I have begun a Build thread for a 1/96 scale R/C model in the Warship Models Underway Board, Civilian Build Board subtopic. Laser-cut 3mm plywood will form the structure for the plug. I intend to cast fiberglass hulls and fittings eventually.

Sincerely,
Nelson

Thanks for posting! I have been a fan of the ship, and hadn't heard good news for a while. Good to see that she is being saved, last I read was not as hopeful. :woo_hoo:

Cheers

Dear Doug,

You're welcome. I may document the Build in the Online Scratchbuild Projects. Right now I have a Build thread on Warship Models Underway. For simplicity, I may restrict posts to one website. I administer Capital Model Boat Association, a Board for general R/C boating in Raleigh, NC, USA.

http://www.capitalmba.com/forum/index.php (This site was deleted due to not maintaining the domain name)

I may post there to generate more interest in the Hobby in Raleigh. Further posts in this Thread about a Build would be inappropriate. Three duplicate threads is, well, redundant.

Sincerely,
Nelson

Hi guys,

Gosh this is an old thread! I'm doing a commission model of Savannah at 1:150 - can anyone tell me where I might find a good source of plans? I've found a few online but they don't strike me as being very good. Can anyone help?

Will.

I began working from that PDF, and found some errors, notably porthole locations. I have been provided files by the MARAD Rep, and have a 1/96 scale plug constructed. In the process I created highly accurate CAD files which I may provide for your 1/150 model. Please contact me via email to discuss.

Okay, this should work better. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Where are you?

Dear Paul,

It fits perfectly in the 6'-5" bed of my 1999 Ford F-150, which was rear-ended in Maryland on my way home. I now have to obtain another F-150, so that the ships will still fit. Delicate items rest in the Cab.

Sincerely,
Nelson

Dear Nelson,

Hope you are well and not injured. Rear enders are annoying. Good luck with your new vehicle - sounds like bed is good protection for the models.

Sincerely,

Paul

Dear Folks,

I appear to be well. Still looking for a replacement truck. The portholes and windows have been cut out from the hull:

Image

While removing material from the Bridge Island to lighten it, I opened up the Bridge windows:

Image

The kit buyer may want to do this as the basic resin parts are relatively heavy and rest on top. Overall weight with ballast should be around 45 lbs. Work on the superstructure continues as I check parts for fit and correlation. I have found the Bridge Deck needed support underneath, so I arranged the pieces to match the floor plan. Illuminating the rooms will be more realistic that way. So far I have found only small tweaks to improve assembly by people not as familiar with the ship as I have become. During my latest visit I located deck lighting, and will include that info in the instructions. She should shine brightly with everything lit up.

Sincerely,
Nelson
