Anyone have any good pictures of the rudder, hopefully a side view, that they are willing to share?

Is there anyway to download or get copies of the photos of the Red Oak Victory AK-235? I want to build a model of a Liberty Ship. How close in design were Victory and Liberty ships? What I am looking for is a Collier to build in 1:48 scale for my model railroad.

Thanks

Pretty impressive collection of rather rare ships you have there Jim.

Good luck on the Victory, in the meantime I'm also in the further planning stages for a Victory, it will be in post-war Belgian merchant service though. It's a long term plan though. We'll see where it gets.

While not a huge fan of Liberties/Victories, I was born in Richmond Ca. shortly after the end of the war, and have long been interested in the Kaiser Shipyards there. I found this wonderful color film made in 1946 that documents the entire effort there from the building of the yards and the ships, and everything in between. I thought it might be of interest to anyone modeling this group of ships.
Hope you all enjoy.

Joe

Thanks, the video was both helpful for my current build and a reminder of the amazing national effort required to prevail in WWII.

Youre very welcome Jim. Im probably as interested in the history aspect of ships as I am in modeling them. Ive been researching the history of the Richmond yards for years, and while I know the story very well, its really exciting to see so much of it in color film. One thing about it that is truly astonishing is how quickly things happened once they got started. The place went from nothing but mud flats to a ship going down the way in just 4 months! In todays climate, you couldnt get an environmental impact report on the feasibility of a shipyard done in 4 months. Wartime expediency trumps all I guess. Im glad you enjoyed it and found it useful. Enjoyed your posts of your builds. I also envy your scratchbuilding skills!
Joe

P.S. Here is a link to some more of the Richmond yards. I believe a lot of it is footage that was used in the movie, as well as footage shot, but not used. You will have to establish a free account to enter, and once in, search by decade and year and location (Richmond). Beware, it can be addictive, as there are countless other subjects to get lost in  .

One more note, I had trouble with my browser. I normally use Firefox, but it wouldnt support it, nor would IE. Opera was the only one that seems to work for me.

Neptune,

Floating Drydock has a 2 sheet 1/96 1/192 plan of APA 152 Latimer (which were Victory conversions). These plans are redrawn by TW and look nice. They include hull lines. Obviously the AKA has many differences from the plain "K" but the "core" is there and there are plenty of pictures online of the museum Victories get "close".

My plans for next year include making two hulls from these plans, one will be an AKA and the other a plain K, in other words I intend to follow my own advice.

Has anyone built a model of the Latimer from these plans? My father served on that ship, and I'd love to know if they proved accurate, and am very interested in seeing the finished model.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, The FDD plans are accurate and include hull lines.
HNSA has plans for sister APA-170 - Gosper online here
http://www.hnsa.org/doc/plans/apa170.pdf
These are copies of USN plans and are accurate to the extent you have to worry about x/y copying distortion. They include a few hull sections but not a complete set of hull lines.

Am building a Haskell class APA right now. Will post a picture here when I am done. Click the aux link below my signature to see where I am now (bottom of the last page).

I've noticed that many of the Crater class Liberty ships have an armament listing of a single 5"38, single 3"50, two 40mm singles and six 20mm single mounts. I can't seem to locate where the 40mm's were mounted; I presume immediately forward of the aft 5"38. Is this correct, and does anyone know where there are pictures, diagrams, or plans to confirm? Thanks.

Walt, the 40mm singles were mounted on the deckhouse top aft P&S.

You have to follow the chain of links to see a picture (why I do not know...the copy function only goes as far as the front page of the website). It is a fantastically informative site and well worth the trouble of navigating it.

http://www.shipscribe.com/usnaux/frameset.html
click...front page picture
click...cargo ship
click...AK cargo ship
Click...AK-70 class
click...the picture
AK-77 Cetus is the 7th picture down.

Jim, thanks so much. That's a great site. I notice that AK-129 Phobos has 2 40 mms at the bow. I'm planning on modelling AK-113 Rutilicus mostly because I like the camo scheme, and can't tell where her 40's are.

Walt, there is also Navsource.

http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/13/130113.htm

There are only 2 pics of AK-113 and the midships superstructure is not shown but the bow certainly is and the 40mm singles are not there. If you view a number of Crater class AKAs in Navsource, you will find that the midships superstructure location was a common one for the 40mm singles.

If you click the "aux" link below my signature and go to page 2, you can see my attempt at AK-117. She does have 2 40mm singles in the superstructure top aft P&S.

Thanks again for your help. I saw the pictures on Navsource and, as you noted, there are no 40mm's at the bow. None of the plans I have show this configuration.

It's pretty cool having a ship (USS Ambrose Bierce) named after someone in your family, even if it's just a Liberty Ship.

Does anyone have more information regarding the service history of this ship? The only info I have is that It was Hull #1693, built in a month and operational for 15 years.

I'd like to build my Trumpeter Liberty ship as her.

They don't have much but here's some info on the ship.
http://usmaritimecommission.de/query.php?datalist=1&typeofquery=Name%20of%20Ship&valueofquery=Ambrose%20Bierce&code=B1693a

Name: Ambrose Bierce
MC Hull: MCE-1693
Design: EC2-S-C1
Operator: American Mail Line Ltd.
Homeport: San Francisco, CA, US
Flag: US
Off.No.: 243.908
Call Letter: K-X-S-F

Problem is they built so darn many of them but finding photos of any one in particular proves challenging. Knowing her operator in Civilian Service should help you find some examples of Liberties they operated if not your ship in particular. Good luck man and please post some photos of your build when you start and feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like :wave_1:

Having any ship named for a family member is a honor and the Liberties have certainly gone done in history as famous war winners even if they weren't flashy warships :thumbs_up_1: The Trumpy Liberties (1/350 and 1/700) are great little kits and you'll be able to make a fine tribute to her no doubt. Take a look through our Gallery here and over here at Fine Waterline http://www.finewaterline.com/pages/gallery/modelgallery.htm (look under "Merchants" and "Dioramas") for some inspiration. There are several outstanding builds on both sites that should make eager to get started :thumbs_up_1:

Thanks a lot Cliffy. That's more information than I had before so I'm making some headway. I think my next stop will be the reference library at the Merchant Marine Academy here on Long Island. I've got a friend of a friend who works there and I'm going to reach out to them for help.

Can someone refer me to a plan set of a wartime troop ship ariant of a Victory ship. The one I have in mind is the Victory Lewiston but a generic troop ship with armament will do. Scale 1/96 or 1?48 please. Bill reklein72@hotmail.com

Hoping somebody can help me out here. After a 5-year hiatus, I'm trying to complete Trumpeter's 1/350 Liberty ship as the SS Willie Jones as she appeared in mid-July 1944. I'm good on everything except decals. I'm looking for decals in identical font and size to the kit ones, but reading "WILLIE JONES" for the bow and "WILLIE JONES" over "WILMINGTON, N.C." for the stern. My grandfather was 3rd Mate on the ship and they were in Manila Bay, PI in July of 1944 when he found out my mom was born.
