My dad is a Vietnam navy vet from the USS Racine, LST 1191 of the Newport class. There are very few kits available for not combatant ships of the era (ie LSTs) and I would like to know if anyone knows how I could either get an old or existing (unknown to me) kit for the Newport class LSTs.

If none is available or in the works, does anyone have suggestions for creating my own?

I have some pictures of his ship and I can track some down online (the ship itself is, at last available report (if anyone knows more current info, let me know), in mothballs at Pearl Harbor...

Any help greatly appreciated...this is a gift to him that I've wanted to do for awhile.

JAG makes a 1/700 Newport class LST. I think you could get it from several of the MW sponsors on the front page. I've included the link to JAG's Newport page below.

Sptifire,

The RACINE is at Pearl Harbor, but it's nto "in mothballs" like some of the other inactivated ships. Racine is one of only four remaiing LSTs of the class that are in some portion of the processing to potentially transfer to international maritime partners. These are high demand ships, and in these days of littoral conflict and demands of HA/DR missions - countries are interested. Bottom line - your dad's ship will continue to serve and meet missions requirements for years to follow.

Scale Shopyard will be coming out with a 1/96 scale LST by late this year. I am currently working on the master hull and when finished it will be shipped to Scale Shipyard in Cal.
