Is there a model available in 1/700 for any ship of the class (USS Iwo Jima, LPH-1)?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iwo_Jima_c ... sault_ship

Yes there is. Waveline kitted it. Availability of it seems to be a bit sporadic, but Pacific Front gets them every so often. Your best bet is to contact PF.

Having built one myself, I can tell you it's a pretty good kit, albeit it has one or two areas it could be improved. Also useful to get at the same time is GMM's modern US radars set and you may want some extra aircraft or deck vehicles.

Cheers,

Rob

I'm building the Inchon in 1:192 during 1980-83, my time aboard but I really think it will be 82 to be exact. Got my plans from Floating Drydock and national archives, Keith

I know I'm dredging up an old subject, but I stumbled across this today. 1/350 full hull USS Guam.
http://ironshipwrights.com/pages/guam.html

She's a little pricey, but I'd be interested in reading a review.

Bump to the top, Now that I've finally finished my Masters Degree, I've found the time to break out my 1/700 LPH and move forward on her. Though, I'm still un-sure on which ship of the class I will build, I am leaning towards the New Orleans.

I've been searching the web high and low for some ship plans with no luck. I've got a impressive folder of images of every ship in the class, but I'm still looking for some drawings so I can get all the various platforms and such right. Any suggestions?

I'm also looking for something to use for the flight deck safety nets, I'm open to suggestions here also.

Thanks for reading.

Pacific Front advertised a special release of the Waveline kit in fall of 2011. The took pre-orders for the special order with Waveline, at approximately $140 per kit, if I recall directly. Those kits shipped last week, so there could be some out on the secondary market or available from show vendors as a result.

Doclat,

I just finished a 1/700 Waveline re-issue just last week. I submitted my build with lots of pics from different angles...hopefully they will help someone in detailing the kit. I sure hope your into scratch building my friend!!! Iwo Jima doesnt come with many parts. All in all it was good to test the skills some and see how creative I could get when presented challenging problems. Hopefully the picture below will paste to this email and you can judge for yourself.

Image still is amazing to me how the pilots land these things on something so small.

Just for clarification I. These postings:
Although the USS IWO JIMA is the leader of her class (not Guadalcanal),
she was LPH-2. She was the first Landing Pad, Helicopter built from the keel
up expressly for her role. LPH-1 was a conversion, and not comparable.

I have a 1/700 USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) (Pitroad) coming that I am going to build as the New Orleans (LPH-11). I served briefly on the NO in the late nineties (Typhoon Justin!!!).
