A favourite of mine; Sawayama Kisen Kaisha's fabulous-looking M.V. Kyushu Maru in Osaka Shosen Kaisha livery. In the third picture she is wearing the remnants of Daido Kaiun Kaisha (Daido Line) titles on her hull......

One of my favourite classes of Nippon Yusen Kaisha motorships; the "I" class of 1965/66 built for expansion into Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Black Sea routes. All eight sisterships were not built at the same yard or by the same builder so they show slight differences in detail from each other......

Here is the poorly-doucmented Toyo Kaiun Kaisha motorship M.V. Kamogawa Maru in Mitsui Senpaku Kaisha livery. Note the tripod mast cantilevered onto the front of the funnel......

Another of my favourites, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha high-speed motorship M.V. Yamashiro Maru of 1963......

Yamashiro Maru is best known for ramming and sinking the East German motorship M.V. Magdeburg in the River Thames in the very early hours of 27th October 1964. There was a popular conspiracy theory that Yamashiro Maru was acting under the instructions of the CIA; the Magdeburg was carrying a deck cargo of 42 Leyland Buses bound for Cuba and delivery of the buses would have undermined the US Government's embargo of post-revolutionary Cuba. S.S. HONG KONG MARU; built as CEFN-Y-BRYN for Cook Shipping Co Ltd (Ambrose, Davies & Matthews), she became British India Steam Navigation’s GAMBHIRA in 1948, then J. Manners & Company’s HONG KONG BREEZE in 1955 before becoming Osaka Shosen Kaisha’s HONG KONG MARU and she may have been converted to a motorship at this point.

Builder – Burntisland Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Burntisland. Yard N°. 227.

Launched - 19th June 1939.
Completed - 16th August 1939.
