So any guesses on which 1/350 kit is gonna be the best, the Gallery or Bronco? Was gonna pre-order, but want to get the most accurate one.

Well, I don't have a lot of information at the moment on the Bronco kit. The Gallery Models looks nice, but does leave off a detail or two (most notably the sliding doors over the boat recesses on the side of the ships). The Bronco Models from their advertising flyer looks actually very similar, but at $50 MSRP cheaper. They also have a good track record with their LCS. Of course, Gallery Models has a good track record with the Wasp.

I too am waiting for some more information to be available. However, if these tow kits really are as similar as they look, I think the cheaper Bronco kit is going to win out in my book.

I've been researching the class and collecting photos in preparation for the kit(s). Below are some good shots of the well deck for people to look at and use to understand the structures:

http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=56242
Note the catwalks and inclined ladders on the starboard side, ramp up from the well deck is offset to port, and that you can see light on the starboard side further back, indicating roughly where the starboard side door is.

Close up showing the overhead bay to better effect:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=56244

Pulled back a little bit: note the red hose reels and color-coded tie-offs:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=56240

Looking the other way:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=56212

Looking the other way, pulled back a bit:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=55905

This is one area that might be represented wrong:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=116995
The rectangle above the refueling receptacle is a radar shield that slides down when they're not fueling. If represented wrong it shouldn't be that hard to fix. You can see this station forward of the one in use on the photo below:
http://www.navy.mil/view_image.asp?id=116039
Note that one shield slides up, the other slides forward.

Received the Bronco LPD-21 New York the other day. Looks like a nice kit in the box. Hours of fun. I have not seen the Gallery/Revell etc of this kit so I can't compare. Only difference I can see are the choice of aircraft included (no Sea Knights in the Bronco but no AV-8Bs in the Gallery). Also, the Gallery has a "wavy" US flag decal option.

Hi Joe,

I am sure it is split at the waterline. When I get home from work I will take a picture for you.

Thanks

Tony

Sorry about the poor quality phone pictures but you can see it is split. The floor is solid on the top half. Pefect for waterline.

I'm now realy beating myself up about the Bronco kit! Do I display it full hull or as a diorama with all the craft and aircraft on display. LCACs out of the well deck etc. Hmmm If full hull, limited as to what comes out the back (maybe one LCAC on the ramp and another behind it, then where would I put the AAVs?). At least with a dio, there is a bit more space to move. But I like full hull. hmmm. Maybe I need two kits!
Great pics Jedrek.

Looks like painting the wildcats is becoming more of a "thing" on the LPDs. San Antonio is now sporting her own special design, joining New Orleans, Mesa Verde, and Green Bay, which is also sporting a unique emblem on the hangar doors.

A photo at the end of January does not show them, but I see a hint of something in March that looks inspired by the Texas state flag, with anchors. Additionally, it looks like at least one of the covers to the chain locker is painted up - look underneath the life ring. *Edit* decent overhead view of the wildcats, but nothing still for the chain locker cover.

Just curious if there are any more thoughts about the 1/350 Gallery kit vs Bronco kit...I'm thinking about buying one.
Thanks!

I'm hoping it's the MRC/Gallery... since that's what I'm building. :shipcaptain:

MRC/Gallery does have sets of flight deck equipment/GSE, Marine Air Elements (to include the Harriers), and Marine Armor elements for sale/offer though easily found. None more than $10 USD, so let me know if you need some sources... I bought extra I case I decided to build a LCS or the old Iwo, but thought the flight deck equipment was a must have when I saw it. I post pics and part numbers in my WIP thread post tomorrow and PM you once it's up.

USS Anchorage (LPD-23) will be the initial recovery ship for NASA's new manned space capsule:

Navy Practices Retrieving Orion Spacecraft

Associated Press | Aug 07, 2014 | by Matt Hamilton

LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Navy and NASA wrapped up the second round of practice recoveries of the Orion spacecraft, which is designed to bring humans to the moon, asteroids and, eventually, to Mars.

The tests took place from Aug. 1 to Aug. 4 a few hundred miles off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, where the Orion will splash down Dec. 4 after reaching an altitude of 3,600 miles.

The December mission will be crew-less, as will a scheduled 2017 orbit around the moon. But like the practice recoveries this week, it's all part of a long-term effort to bring humans further into space than they've ever traveled before.

"We're building a crewed vehicle to go to other planets," said Larry Price, Lockheed Martin's deputy program manager for the Orion. Lockheed Martin designed and built the Orion for NASA. "(The Orion) is the complex vehicle that will be able to return them safely," Price said.

The Orion is akin to an astronaut taxi, albeit a highly advanced one. Traveling to and from earth, the Orion will face up to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,204 degrees Celsius) heat and move at speeds of up to 20,000 mph.

Parachutes, a protective heat shield and thrusters will slow down the Orion and help it land accurately in the sea, NASA Orion program manager Mark Geyer said.

In the 1960s and 1970s, when plopping into the sea was the landing method of choice for the Apollo and Gemini spacecraft, the Navy used helicopters to locate and lift up newly arrived astronauts.

But in this next chapter of sea recoveries, which haven't been carried out since 1975, the spacecraft is towed up a ramp into the stern of a naval vessel.

Practicing that recovery was the focus of the USS Anchorage's crew, which repeated picking up a mock-up version of the 20,000-pound capsule six times, NASA spokeswoman Brandi Dean said.

To overcome the turbulent waters, which forced officials to halt a recovery practice in February, an air-bag system was added to a cradle around the capsule, and rubber bumpers were installed in the ship's deck for cushioning.

Hauling in the Orion involves more than just attaching cords. About 17 Navy scuba divers will capture images of the spacecraft and collect parts of the capsule that float nearby. Crews on six smaller ships will help stabilize the Orion, and three helicopters will provide guidance from a birds-eye view.

The USS Anchorage is now berthed at the Port of Los Angeles, where visitors to this weekend's Navy Days can view the Orion prototype and tour the vessel.

Can anyone assist me with sourcing a set of hull and cross-section plans of the San Antonio class LPD?

I am currently looking at a number of amphibious ships to build in working 1/72 scale but I have been unable to source some quality drawings to enable me to make the hull.

Here are 5 of the 22 pics I took of LPD-18 USS New Orleans while on a Hornblower cruise in San Diego Bay.

Hey Guys!

Whats the difference between the Bronco 1/350 LPD's?

Is it simply small fittings, major updates or just a change of decals? I'm in the queue for one, but am unsure which one to jump for...
