Magnificent work !NukeMM wrote:Thanks for the efforts, Tracy. I've seen that page show up in my Google search results. That particular page isn't what I'm looking for, but it helps with the "process of elimination".
I've heard that Al Ross might know some of the answers to my questions, too.
I think that I'm looking at the Oyster Bay tending to just MTB RON 33 in October '44. I have found reference to the USS Wachapreague tending to boats of both MTB RONs 12 and 36; leaving just RON 33.
Oh, did I share, with you folks on this thread, the rough layout for my 1/350 USS Oyster Bay diorama?
This is the latest water base that I'm going to go with:

Thanks, BCBilly!
I have since completed this PT Boat Tender diorama. There is a build-up Feature, here: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html
And I'll be adding new pics of it with additional PT Boats, here:

Mr. Ross,
It is all too, late now. But, I believe one of my questions was about Ron 33 and which boats had which layout of smoke generators and depth charges during the Leyte Gulf operations.
This point is moot, for me, now since my diorama is all but finished. I just haven't identified each boat by its hull number and varied the arrangements a little from boat to boat. I still have two more boats that I'd like to add to the seven that are already finished and mounted to the diorama.

Calling all PT Boat enthusiasts... QUESTION FROM A NEW BUIL
I haven't built a model for at least 25 years and want to get started again. I have the Lindberg 1/32 scale PT 109 motorized kit (been sitting under the bed for quite a long time) I thought I would put it finally start building it, but want to build it as a static model.
My question is since this kit has only two propeller shafts and rudders, do you have any suggestions for creating the third shaft /propeller and rudder?
Also is it me or do the existing rudders seem larger than need be for a static model.
Thanks for any and all suggestions
Thanks
Jeff Curtis

Jeff.
The real rudders looked like this. On a 1/32 scale model, they would be 9/16" tall.

I'm working on a laser deck upgrade for both the Revell kit. This will be for both versions and I plan to include several additional laser details such as the radar. I'll keep the forum updated as to it's progress. If it works out, the next PT project will be a 1/72 Higgins.

Andy, tell us more. I have Revell's 109 in the stash and I was just planning to sand off the planking detail and go from there. But, your product may change my plans. I'd love to know more about what you have in mind if you don't care to share.
TIA,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Certainly, would love to share!
I have my own Epilog laser and plan to use 1/16" baltic plywood for the deck and will engrave as much detail as I can into it (not the boards) including the cut outs for the various hatches and vents. The deck will be flush so items like torps, depth charges, rocket, cannon and machine guns can be placed as desired. I will include a selection of weapons bases that can be used if desired. I plan to tackle most of the superstructure and will use 1/32" plywood for this, as well as details such as the hatches. Laserboard (1/64" thick) will be used for building up details like hinges and the like. For the 50 cal tubs, I was looking to use 19/32" brass tube, which looks like it'll come pretty close to bang on.
The plan is to provide enough in the kit to be able to combine with the Revell kit to make a pretty good model. Of course adding White Ensign details would really spice it up.
Finally, I plan to offer the various types of radar masts, I will use a combination of a pewter casting or two plus the laser cut materials to build up the mast using the sandwich method. I use this method a great deal for my trains and ships http://www.traintroll.com/hobuiltships.html shows an example.
I'm hoping to get most of this done in the next few months and will be looking for a volunteer or two to build the kits and provide comment/feedback before going into production. Instructions are always the hold up so these initial couple may require some good skills to put together.
Being my own best customer, I've always wanted to build a large diorama based on the gaggle of Elcos lashed together refueling and repairing at Leyte (page 61 - American PT Boats in World War II). I also want to keep the modification kit as reasonable priced as possible. The last thing I'll throw out is the ability to make custom kits on demand which I have already been doing for a few train and ship customers. Because I use a laser, mods can often be done very quickly. This capability also allows me to make updates and tweaks to the kit when required based on customer feedback.
Feel free to contact me off line if you would like to discuss further. sales(at)traintroll.com.
Cheers,
Andy

PT-596 40mm Bofors Question
I'm in the process of doing my research for a 1/35 Italeri PT Boat build and I have a question for the experts.
The 40mm Bofors on the late war PTs..............was that gun "Manual only" or was it "Powered"? Period photos are difficult to glean info from. PT memorials of today are missing so many parts as to make a guess impossible.
I would suspect that weight would be a factor as well as power availability.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards
Steve

Re: Calling all PT boat fans!
Andy, I was planning on starting the 109 pretty soon, but after reading about your plans I think I'll put her on the back burner for a while to let them come to fruition. By all means, please keep us posted on your progress.

Hello All:
I've set up a blog for the PT BOAT SIG and its address is: http://ptblog-ptcons...roup-blog.html.
Please leave a post there ... but please, pay attention to the rules I've set up, i.e.: no "mine is larger than yours" posts and no personal attacks. Thank you.

Re: Calling all PT boat fans!
Garth, you are most welcome! I'm looking forward to getting your book. I have two P.T.s in the stash right now, Italieri's big one and Revell's old P.T. 109 (a childhood favorite of mine). I think your book will be helpful with both.
I appreciate your efforts in reseach and writing to inform us P.T. boat fans. Is guys like you that let the rest of us make our builds as good as our skills will allow. You make a great contribution to the hobby and it is appreciated!
