Calling all USS Barnegat-class seaplane tender (AVP) fans

Well, all of Carl's updates on his projects gave me a little incentive to do some more work on my Cook Inlet. I'm torn between between detailing and painting; so I'm doing a little of both.

The ship will be depicted in a Ms. 33 paint and I started at the bow as this is the easier part of the scheme.

On the detail side; I have added the 20mm and sky lookouts aft, and started detailing the crane, and lately a kerosene tank that was located on the aft end of the main deck house. Also, the deck edge on the 01 level had a unique double rounded feature that I found to be intriguing; so I went after it, I'll leave it for you to decide how well I pulled it off.

Thanks for the comments on the Cook Inlet. I am still working on the USS Stevens, just not nearly as fast! I got to the point that I really needed to model the crane and associated machinary and there just wasn't any info to be had; being a detail fanatic I just couldn't bring myself to "fake" the assemblies so work stopped and I took up the Cook Inlet while I researched the aircraft equipment. Well a few months ago an internet friend found some information and I've been building CAD models of the crane to build from. Actually have already started the turntable of the kingpost.

I've been working my Fannytail off on the Fantail details.

Depth Charge racks, Smoke Screan Generators, 5" Practice Loader, Winch, Railings, Chocks, Bitts, and Stern Roller Chock.

This was my first plan for my diorama water base, Tamiya Ocean Effect Plate (11.5" x 16.5"), but I think that I might use the base that I had planned for a harbor diorama and the Plastruct "agitated water" sheet (13" x 23").

The wood base is already prepared and I have a plexiglass already custom made to slide into the routered groove.

I like the look of the larger Plastruct sheet more - it fits better for a calm sea with ships at anchorage.

I like the look of the safety net railings. This is my first time with these. The hard part is keeping the nets from filling up with paint. I airbrushed them with Navy Gloss Gray and after the bending and cutting process some brass showed through, so I had to apply a thinned coat of the paint to them, as well as a little dry brushing. The top rails are Grimey Black.

They seem to bend differently between the stanchions than the regular PE railings, but maybe that's just the fineness of the L'arsenal rails. I like them, none-the-less. I still have to insert a couple of stanchions at a couple of the bends.

I have re-painted the Plastruct "agitated water" base. I've gotten rid of most of the green and applied more Future to it.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't like working with safety net railings, but here they are along with a couple of inclined ladders aft of the 5" gun.





These canvas covered railings were more troublesome than others that I have done.

Thank you Jimmy! And thanks for checking in, on this.

It was my intention, in the beginning of this thread, to instill more interest in this class of ships and the ISW USS Mackinac AVP-13 kit which is the only one out there. Besides myself, I have seen two versions from Richard Sliwka and two from Mike Taylor.

A lot of these ships were built and served in different capacities and configurations. Their resemblence to DEs or DDs is attractive, too.

The thread has turned into a bit of a WIP thread, but Tim, Timmy, and Sean are letting me continue. I welcome any and all contributions to the topic, here.
