JoeP,

I've read about the Brown Water Navy ironclads, but haven't purchased any of them. I do like the Thoroughbred ships, though. I have photos of their USS Monitor and USS Essex that I built, adding detail as you did, on my website: http://www.devinjpoore.com/models.html

An interesting article from USNI's Naval History Magazine that argues Monitor had a short-lived boxy armoured shield attached to the area around its gunports during the engagement at Hampton Roads: https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval-hi ... k-old-icon

Suggests the artifact on display at the Naval Academy is actually this temporary shield, and numerous contemporary written sources refer to this shield.

Sean Hert pointed me to that article yesterday. Very interesting. It's nothing I've heard of before, but that doesn't mean anything. I have the catalog book of drawings mentioned in the article, and I likely can have access to the original drawing in the Steven's Institute collection, so I'm going to have to look into this further. Always amazing how new information can be turned up over a century and a half later.
