About those railgun turrets I mentioned in an earlier post.........

I still have another modeler working on 3D printing them. He's about 98-99% done with the turret housing. He's also starting work on the railgun barrels. Last I heard from him which was last month, he said he could have everything finished next month or in August. Here's hoping. ;)

These are pics of the turrets he started making about a year or so ago. Very early provisional design.

This is a next batch of pics the modeler sent me months ago after we had talked things over and tweaked the design somewhat.
Unfortuneately, the back of the turret is still too big and the width of the turret needs to be sized down a bit.

Now we're finally getting somewhere! :) Recent pics the modeler sent me a few weeks ago after more design changes.
The turret housing is about 98-99% done. The modeler will be starting on the barrels soon.
But I did tell him to make the barrels solid and not have "holes" in them.

This post, and the next two posts, show the completed 3D printed railgun turrets that another modeler made for me. They'll require a lot of cleanup in the next several days and weeks before they get added to the model. They won't be permanently glued on, but will be removable in case I want to switch them out and put in the regular 16" turrets at any time for display.
They still look a little big, but not by much. I asked the other modeler who made them to get as close as he could to the size of a regular 16" gun turret.
I think he did pretty good.
I'm undecided if I want to add any extra "greeblies" on the 3D printed turrets to give them a bit more detail. I mean, as you can see for example, they don't have the rangefinder hoods that regular 16" turrets have. Or maybe I'll have to add some photoetch ladders along the sides so crew can get on top of the turrets for maintenance or other purposes?

I suppose a railgun has a trajectory almost as straight as a laserbeam, would a traditional rangefinder have a point then? And I also think that a ship with this kind of armament on it would likewise have the bridge adapted to the new look, it would look more like a Zumwalt kind of thing then. But they sure look the part.

FINISHED! Got the railgun turrets all primed, sanded, built, painted, and attached to my future battleship. Guess this is about as close as I'll ever see railguns on a US Navy ship. The railgun turrets are removable and can be interchanged/replaced with regular 16" gun turrets on the model if I want to.

Something I forgot to ask: I'm still debating if I want to add any small details to the railgun turrets. They just look so plain and boring sometimes. I don't know yet. Should I add any small details to them or not? If so, then what?
I also have a 4th railgun turret as a spare. I haven't built or painted it yet. But if I do, I can add barrels that are in an elevated position to it.
This way, I can change out one of the regular railgun turrets and put in a turret that looks like it is firing if I want to.

I would just do a bit of shading and dry brushing if details are lacking, maybe imitate some plating on the turrets. In other words if you lack detail, you can make a lot of it up by using paint and textures and weathering. just a thought!

Maybe some PE hatches on the side or back? Dunno if the turrets are envisioned to be as heavily armoured as the originals though.

I like your concept and I agree that the railgun turrets are kinda boring, maybe add some access hatches for maintenance purposes, and maybe a small GPS/Satcom bubble antennas, something to catch the eye, remember this is your concept and anything goes.
