Hi all, well after build my first ship model around 9 years ago (1/350 Hasegawa Nagato) I have the taste for it again. Too be honest I haven't done much modeling for around 3 years and am just getting back into it. I picked up the new tool Tamiya Yamato kit with a few extras last week from a facebook sale. I have decided I want to get the Pontos Advanced detail set but haven't been able to source one yet but will order once I do. I cleaned up my desk and started work on it.

Image

Luckily i have a rather large desk in my garage as the kit is huge

Image

This is what i have as far as aftermarket for now. I have already ordered the Anatomy of the Ship Yamato and Mushashi from the US and should get that within 2 weeks, ansd as stated I am looking for a Pontos Advanced detail set.

Image

I have started on the display base and stand and will post pics shortly

thanks for looking

While I am waiting to get the details sets I can still start on the hull and display base. I am not using the kit stand and followed the same method I used for my Nagato. I made a start yesterday by drilling a small diameter hole through the hull and into the baseboard and gradually increase the size until I get to the size for the wood dowel I am using (9mm). I used the same mounting location as the kit to ensure no trouble with any supports etc.

Image

Image

Image

I then measure the length for the dowel and glue it in and sand flush on the underside

Image

To tidy it up I will be using some brass tube

Image

and with a rubber washer to protect the hull and paint once mounted

Image

Next I measured the reuired length of plastic tubing for inside the hull and cut. I then decided to used the kit piece to add more rigidity/surface area to the join

Image

Image

Image

Image

and a test fit

Image

Image

finally a size comparison with my Nagato- she's going to be big lol

Image

Today I have put a clear coat on the base and will also add some felt to the underside. Pics to come tonight

thanks for looking

Anthony

Wow. She is big. That's a nice looking Nagato too.

Update as promised, nothing too exciting- just finishing off the display bas and more on the hull. I gave the board a couple of coats of clear varnish and also put some felt on the underside

Image

Image

I also reinforced the mounting point in the hull with some Tamiya Epoxy putty and added the kit reinforcement pieces

Image

Image

I am now in the process of tackling that massive seamline where the front hull piece joins -why did Tamiya decide to have the lower hull in 2 pieces??? I have masked up around the seam and will use some Tamiya white putty to fill in the seam and sand down without hopefully losing any of the hull details

Cheers

Anthony

A clean and methodical start! :thumbs_up_1:

And judging by the Nagato, this will be a thread to follow.

Very nice. I like your method for attaching the ship to the base.

Thanks DMC, it is what I used for the Nagato and something I saw on these forums. I think it was a Kongo build from memory but it was like 9 years ago lol

I am still trying to find the Pontos advanced set but it appears that every online shop that i know of is out of stock and there is even none on Ebay. In the meantime I have got a few more bits and pieces- The Anatomy of the Ship book and some PE bits and pieces and a PE cut out kit which should help with all of those handrails etc.

Image

Image

Image

I have also done a bit more on the ship, the seam has been filled

Image

Image

Image

I also added the kit PE pieces to the bottom of the hull and the parts for the propulsion and put the rudders together but these will be painted and added separately later

Image

Image

and added the middle deck - not glued down yet just screwed.

Image

Unfortunately I won't be able to do a lot more until I can get the Pontos set :(

HobbyDecal, which I think is part of Pontos, has the set: http://www.hobbydecal.com/detail.cgi?number=37003f1

LuckyModel in Hong Kong also has it: https://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?i ... PS-37003F1

So I'm back doing some modelling today. I removed the kit plastic rails and raised detail and then worked on the Pontos brass and PE. I haven't done a lot of PE work and the last time was my Nagato 9years ago and my eyesight has gotten a lot worse since then lol and my hands shake a little so doing this was a bit frustrating. It took about 5hrs or so to do these tiny PE rails in the seaplane/boat hangers but it is done. Also is there any alternatives to CA glue. I normally use a gel type as it is slower setting but can glob up and is hard to clean up. I tried some thinner glue bit it dries before i can move things into position. Any recommendations?

I also added the front upper hull the other day and filled some gaps

...and joined the main deck just now

Thanks for looking

unsure as yet, maybe before the blackening era. I have never used a wooden deck before so will need to do some research. I have heard about staining the deck- any idea what to use and how to go about it?

I once stained deck on 1/350 project (Duke of York) which is not complete. However in my case what I wanted was a worn out painted deck, so I have first painted the deck in the chiping fluid, and then painted it with Tamiya XF24 acryllic. I then chipped the paint away, and and also I used sand paper to sand away the paint in some areas where people walked. I dont know how accurate that was but I recall liking the appearance very much. I especially liked the sanding part as it allowed me variety in degree of wear.

For my 1/700 Yamato (some time in future) I plan to paint the deck black I think, but I dont use deck stickers in that scale.

Can always recommend a wooden deck, never been able to get as nice results without them, even when painting them over the texture will add a little something
