Hi Guys,

thanks for accepting my on this forum. After a long period of struggling with PTSD (Bad mission in Bosnia with Dutch Army in 1994 and 1995 and some bad experiences in the oil delta in Nigeria in 2003) I started in 2015 again with scale modelling (in the past I did some tries during my teenager years, and with limited budget not really successful). This modelling is very help full to keep the black ghosts from the past down.

I started in 2016 with a 1/48 Academia F15 Strike Eagle, a FW190D (tried to do the camouflage pattern with a brush which was a disaster and bought a Sparmax TC620H air Compressor including Harder and Steenbeck nozzle set). I also found out all the PE sets, you can go mad on this and built Tamiya F14D and P47D 1/48 with Eduard PE sets, really great stuff.

For some reason I found out that navy vessels looks really great so I built my 1st navy vessel 1/350 Tamiya Kagero including Infini PE set. Hoping you can enjoy the result. I just finished my Yamato project (Tamiya's 1/350 Yamato premium kit + Pontos PE set (birthday present from my wife). It took me 1.5 years, but it was a great journey. The Kagero and the Yamato can now set sails and are ready to explore new horizons.

Let me know any comments, tips and tricks.

Regards, Henk

I started with the hull, complex task because the Pontos PE detail up set needs another sequence. The Pontos set is incredible. 1st tries to setup the hull.

Welcome to the board. I also find focusing on modeling helps a lot with my mental state. I’m looking forward to following your build.

I also did the 1st try regarding the "flightdeck", lot of PE, my fingers are not that thin, but I am able to playing piano, but this small PE is sometimes a fight.

oops, I bend one of two the Tamiya delivered PE board ladder/platforms the wrong way, no change that it will survive by bending back :Mad_6: Really hate this, but with some "small" (what is small at 1/350 scale) gel superglue I tried to repair it. On the 1st picture the right one, the 2nd picture the wrongly bended and "repaired" one. I am happy that most of it is hidden under other structures :woo_hoo:

and by placing the picture I noted that I switched the handrail of the platform and the ladder :mad_2: ok maybe Friday evenings are not the best moments to do this....

Wow, that IS quite a PE set.

Terrific work: I am especially amazed by the first of several flight deck photos that you posted on Sept 17.

Hi Thanks Chuck, not yet finished. Made a small mistake because I added too much plastic (turning tables) which was also part of Pontos package. The Pontos manual was not clear enough (or maybe better it was Friday evening and I did not read it in the right way  ) Under construction/renovation now....

The painting of the hull will take some scheduling so I have to find an longer period to do all the preps/painting/cleaning etc, so I just start with the main crane. The Tamiya kit already includes some PE parts, but the PONTOS kit makes this crane another project itself. O my goodness wow this a lot of details, sweating and time consuming. Maybe over the top but (I think) I like it.....

See the difference between Tamiya and Pontos Manuals. I decided to built both to have a good example of the difference and yes maybe the result is that I am going really over the top with this :lol_pound:

I'll keep you posted about the results of both cranes

Yesterday evening I finished the crane and the catapults which were part of the Tamiya package, happy that I bought the Pontos package, because both Pontos catapult and crane are much more realistic compare to the Tamiya ones. Still doubting about the crane cables, in both the Tamiya and Pontos package they are PE made so relatively thick, so maybe some rigging wires are a better solution. Any advise/experiences are highly appreciated!! :thumbs_up_1:

Welcome to the forum.

I've been building Yamato on and of for about 5 years now (I'm a slow builder  ) and I use the same Pontos upgrade.

Seems you are doing a great job. About the bending of the stairs the wrong way: I feel your pain, I did the same with the stairs on the tower...not sure how I'll tackle that though.

About the crane, I went with the provided etch cables, never thought they were too thick, but if you really want to be sure rigging might do the trick indeed.

One question though: I noticed that you already added the wooden deck to the model. Doesn't that make life a lot more difficult when you will paint her? Or do you paint the wooden deck with the rest of the ship?

Keep up the good work!

Thanks wish you a lot of pleasure. Regarding the wooden deck I have seen some bad examples from other guys. I am afraid for the fingerprints or some spray mist on the plastic original deck so it will come off later. So I decided to put in on the plastic deck as soon as the deck left the plastic bag. Yeah and indeed will cost more time to cover when I have to spraypaint the hull, but with the right Tamiya tape I have the experience you can easily keep the area under plasticfoil and tape completely clean.

I did the first coating of the hull, weathering to be done later, also some other colour for some details to do. Sometimes these pictures are showing too much details, even the small dust parts :cool_2:

I feel your paint on the dust parts, yet, that makes us mortals I guess  . Never understood how some modelers don't have those dust particles ^^

Great paintwork though, love the shading.

Regarding to dust, I always lightly sand the base coat with 2000 grit after curing. It takes all the dust particles away then after weathering some small passes if more dust appears.

I finished the Pontos Crane and Catapults, which are much more detailed compare to the Tamiya ones. I like the work, not easy for my large hands & fingers and took me from the street several evenings.
