I received the model by Trumpeter today.
It is 1:200 scale.
I am reading all I can get my hands on.
I am trying to decide on camo scheme.

Sounds like a good adventure!

By coincidence, just this week I received a very nice copy of Fritz-Otto Busch's book on her from a seller in Australia . I haven't started it yet, but in queue for the winter reading season. I'd be interested in an thoughts on the book from those who may have read it previously.

Enjoy researching your build project. I always find research to be (sometimes more than) half the fun!

I guess this is the same book under a slighty different title - which I've had for decades. Busch is an excellent writer, also well known for his book on Prinz Eugen. Of course, the translators deserve some credit too!

The book highlights the major events of Scharnhorst's earlier history in the first chapter, then goes through the details of her final operation. It is written like a novel, based on survivor experiences - lots of dialogue, bringing the events to life, but covers the details of the events, mainly from the German point of view. I've read it many times over the years! I'm sure you'll enjoy the read!

I found out I was missing a part to the Scharnhorst model ! Yes it finally happened. Wow.
I called Hobbylinc, the place I ordered the model from and they answered the phone right away and ordered the missing part,
Deck T1. Not a tiny part.

I was happy that I ordered the model from Hobbylinc!

I bought the book Anotomy of the ship
The battleship Scharnhorst.
What a book! Many full page color illustrations.
There are illustrations of different guns in great detail.
And rigging drawings too.

A fantastic book.

I was preparing to install the rear mast tripod assy and found out it would not install ,it was not perpendicular.
I had not made any mistakes. I removed the entire rear tripod mast two times and cut down
the rear leg of the tripod about 1/4 inch.
This also involved in unglueing several joints.
I applied glue to soften up the joint then wiggling it apart.
Of course you must be careful not to bend any railings.

The front mast is also too short and must be lengthened
I will wait until the end to do that.

The catapult.
The best advice I can give is to
Mount the gas cylinders to the main rail first!
This way you will know where to locate the
Brass PE base plates to allow clearance of the gas cylinders.
The two pins sticking up on that ladder thing,
I do not know. So I removed them.
As Ben would say.........moving on.... Hahaha

Any photos? Why not start a WIP thread over in picture post? I can move this over there for you and you can keep everything in one topic.

Step # 57 crane for planes.
The final step to ad the crane lifting arm
Does not make sense.
You have to figure something out for a solution.
I will look at pictures in my Battleship Scharnhorst book by Stefan Draminski.
It shows the crane close up. There is a operators platform the the Trumpeter kit does not include.
In real life that operators platform might get in the way while turning. Not sure.

My solution was to attach the crane lifting arm on the outside of the triangular plates that
have the slot in it. I just centered the lift arm lower part over the mounts and glued it in place.
Skip those silly covering plates.
If you use plastic glue you can attach the crane lifting arm then after a couple of minutes lift the whole
rig onto the deck and position the crane arm while the glue is still gooey.

The next step was easier. It is the Torpedo launcher #58. One on each side of the ship.
There is a brass PE part PE-F3 that is a tiny little folded part. After looking at it for a while and playing with it I realized it was a set of steps. I mounted in on the plate sticking out from the bottom of the launcher.
Later I saw that it was supposed to sit on the deck extending up the the launcher. ,Oh well.....moving on. As Ben on You Tube would say. Hahahah

I will try to post pics here of in progress work on the Scharnhorst 1:200 scale Trumpeter model.

On the photo of the overhanging walkway be VERY careful on the whole deal. Very fragile.
The little tiny parts make more sense as you make a dry run first.
The little tiny tiny triangle has a rod sticking upwards. That rod touches the bottom of the
plate sticking out of the attachment plate for the walkway.

Photo with the main turrets, That pic of the turret base is showing a tooth
pic holding the two ends of the wrap around PE strip that you need to glue on.
I use Gorilla Super glue. I spread it on with a tooth pic.

Thats all for now. Thanks for looking.

This whole post with pics has moved to the WIP (works in Progress) section.
When you see the main FORUM scroll down to the drawing of the CAMERA that says Picture Post.
Then scroll down to Works in Progress.

Step # 62 Scharnhorst by Trumpeter.

This step shows assembly of the medium size guns.
There are 7 of them.
They get built all alike.
There is some confusion and the kit includes 4 gun covers that have a
kind of cover over the top of the rear of the guns.
I do not know why but there are 4 in the kit . Maybe for the Gnesenau?
This type gun cover may have used over the guns.

On the 7 guns Step 62 it shows a PE c-28 on each side of the left and right gun.
If you want you could just skip this step unless you just want to learn about gun construction,
When the gun covers are on you will not be able to see that little brass part anyway.

October 2021 I am getting near the end of my Scharnhorst build. Today I got the starboard railings on. Tomorrow I will get the port railings on.
Then I save the aircraft builds for last.
I like the aircraft builds. It ads a little color to the model.
I had a small Nazi flag left over from a Bismark build. The flag is very small. It is about 3/4" x 1/2".

The last step of the model Scharnhorst.
The aircraft. Good luck on the pontoon attachment structure.
I finally just made my own structure.
I used .030 and .020 round plastic rods.
The canopy.... Bend the sides down first.
Glue the sides on to the cockpit. The glass structure should be all the way forward .Then you can bend and glue the back of the canopy window down.
You might have to fill in the gap with plastic or paper.
