Thank you for your kind remarks Martin, much appreciated.

I have not had much chance for working on the model as 1/1 life has intervened, nothing serious, just the normal day-to-day.

I am still prepping for priming so there is quite a lot of finishing off to be carried out, things like the shelter-deck bulkheads. I put these together quite a while ago and they were a nightmare!

for some reason I was not looking forward to fitting these, and I was right, take it from me you need to dry-fit, file, check, re-check and then go through the whole process again!

The first one I fitted ended up looking like a dogs dinner, there was nothing for it but to gingerly remove, re-fettle and re-fit. Fortunately I managed this without the whole shebang falling apart!

Here are some pics, I did the normal filling with Holts Cataloy, this stuff is brill!, hardens off quickly, sticks like the proverbial to both the metal and the plastic and is easy to sand.

As you can see, I didn't make a very good job of drilling out the portholes before I fitted the etch, I have rectified this now as you can see -

This is the side I had to remove and re-fit, it's not brilliant by any means, but I can assure you, it's a thousand times better than it was initially! -

Still needs a bit of filling along the lower joint, but that will be easily attended to in the near future

I also started to mask off some bits for paint, just used ordinary toilet tissue here, that will suffice here methinks!

Well, that's it for a while, really MUST try and do some paint at the weekend, I can then get on with the wooden decks and fittings thereon.

Have also added the awning stanchions to the turrets as a side project.

More soon!

Cheers, Jabb

those brass to plastic joints can be a real pain, well done on a smooth result. You are motoring along at a great pace Jabb, I am still doing the same pieces as before. Thank you for the heads up on potential problems before i get there lol. Regards Pete in RI

Jabberwock, like you, I too am building the Trumpter/Pontos Hood all-be-it I am somewhat further ahead in my build. I do have a question for you and/or your followers regarding the paravane booms (page 2 of the Pontos instructions). There are parts provided for four booms and the build gives you the option of having them erected or stowed with the instructions showing an erected boom just aft of the forward port breakwater and a stowed boom behind the starboard side. Other Pontos photos show a third erected boom on the port side between the fore and aft breakwaters. Since I wish to install only the one erected boom on the port side, my question is: while one stowed boom can be added on the starboard side, where would the other two be stowed? The following are recent pictures of my build. While I have endeavoured to adhere to guidance provided in the Hood Association website, you can attribute errors in my build or my nomenclature to the fact that I have a 'light blue' rather than a 'navy blue' background.

Hi Pete, thank you, will let you know of any issues I encounter, like the following!

Hello Gonzo, that is looking really good, I hope mine turns out as good as that! Post some more pictures, maybe some close-ups please.

As far as the booms go, I have an idea that they may be stowed in the storage areas behind the breakwaters, but please don't take my word on that, we need an EJ, a Frank or a Bill to come along and confirm that thought, or, more likely provide the correct answer.

Slight amendment to the plans for this weekend, I have been looking back at some of the pictures and having looked at the model I have decided to remove and redo the etched steel deck on the shelter-deck. It was the first time I had used two-part epoxy resin glue in a long time and I have never been 100% happy with the fit, and have noticed that it is quite badly fitted and there are lumps and gaps where there shouldn't be.

Lump -

Gaps -

So, bullet-biting time. I looked for a suitable start point to start the removal of the stainless steel part -

and gently moved the scalpel around between deck and etch to break the seal. I started at various points around the deck until they all joined together and the etch was free -

I would not have been able to do this had the etch been made from brass as it would have bent and distorted and would have ended up unusable.

I looked underneath the first one to be removed and noticed this -

I obviously applied way too much adhesive, it hasn't even touched the plastic deck at this point.

I removed the second section, more confidently this time, again with no damage -

Attachment:
IMG_1761 (2).jpg
IMG_1761 (2).jpg [ 393.79 KiB | Viewed 1778 times ]

Here is the cause of the lump, a large piece of the adhesive, but, more importantly, I missed some of the deck detail that needed removal -

Attachment:
IMG_1762 (2).jpg
IMG_1762 (2).jpg [ 386.16 KiB | Viewed 1778 times ]

and again, a large area of the etch which hadn't even touched the deck!

Attachment:
IMG_1763 (2).jpg
IMG_1763 (2).jpg [ 398.25 KiB | Viewed 1778 times ]

Poor modelling and a complete lack of attention, I remember back to when I fitted this I did do it in rather a hurry as I thought the adhesive would dry very quickly - it didn't!

To be continued -

On to the resolution - having been fortunately and kindly donated the largest part of a Pontos kit by Timhan, I had the two etch parts available to fit immediately. I did try to remove the old glue from the fitted etch and it did come away fairly easily so I could have used them if required.

Here are the replacement parts and the glue used -

THIS time, I spread the resin much more thinly -

Attachment:
IMG_1765 (2).jpg
IMG_1765 (2).jpg [ 398.38 KiB | Viewed 1775 times ]

with the following results -

Attachment:
IMG_1766 (2).jpg

and the lump

Attachment:
IMG_1767 (2).jpg

and gaps

Attachment:
IMG_1769 (2).jpg

are now gone!

Moral! Pay more attention and don't rush things!

I spent a lot of money on this kit and want to end up with something I can be proud of, if I hadn't rectified that mistake, I would have noticed it forever!

Thanks all.

Cheers, Jabb

Nice save! That was extremely kind of Timhan to send you the spares, cudo's to you Tim! :thumbs_up_1: Looks like you helped save the day. Jabb, are you able to get down to Telford this weekend? Was there last year but couldn't swing it this year, maybe in 20. Thinking of deck adhesive, how about the spray-on contact stuff ? I know you have to get the parts positioned correct first time, but I use the stuff quite regularly at work so am used to that minor detail. Just thought it might help a full surface contact and no lumps.

A few more shots showing railings added to forward areas since the above photos. For those who have yet to reach this far in your build, I'd like to state that the Pontos detail set is nothing short of superb and is a must if building the Trumpeter Hood.

Oh boy!

Fantastic looking model!

What paint did you use, that looks really excellent.

Cheers, Jabb

I used primarily Testors Model Master enamel paints including their 507B Mid Grey RN and, for the steel decks, 507A Dark Grey RN. The black boot topping was Tamiya NATO Black and for the hull anti-fowling and corticene I prepared two different mixes. Don't ask what the mixes are as both were done in a less than scientific way until I got what I thought looked right to my eye.

See Jabb, always take out some form insurance. So glad you were able to use the "spare parts". Don't be too hard on
yourself, as this operation was problematical building my own model. Lucky for me, was able to accomplish without
using my spare. As explained to you, i always try and buy 'two' sets just to help rectify 'cockups'. I am lucky to be able
to afford them, so am pleased to know they went to a good home. (Hope the "moderator" lets my language through) !!.
Love your work.
Tim.

Hi guys, yes I am still around but have been relocated to the garage! It has been cold and wet here for quite a while now, conditions unsuited to modelling, but I have done a bit, see below.

Thanks for the info Grizzly, now I am isolated in the 'new workshop', I may take a swing at enamels, having had to use acrylics due to the vapours!

Pete, apart from the 'dreich' weather all good and looking forward to Christmas.

Tim, again may I say thanks to you, it has really helped, not just on this bit, but the odd spacer here and the odd piece there, and with that back-up it just gives a bit more confidence.

Anyway, enough speil, modelling!

So here is the finished metal deck -

A huge improvement!

I think I mentioned before that I use a soapy liquid on the deck before attaching the wooden decks -

Attachment:
IMG_1776 (2).jpg
IMG_1776 (2).jpg [ 398.51 KiB | Viewed 1320 times ]

This is a mix of about 20-30 to 1 of water to liquid hand soap. When it is painted onto the deck I then scrub it in to make it 'frothy' -

Attachment:
IMG_1778 (2).jpg
IMG_1778 (2).jpg [ 399.43 KiB | Viewed 1320 times ]

and its a good job I did!

I have mentioned this before, the wooden decks are not quite right, this one was 'off' as well! You can see the misalignment around the rear 'box'. It seems to fit pretty well everywhere else!

Attachment:
IMG_1779 (2).jpg
IMG_1779 (2).jpg [ 397.56 KiB | Viewed 1320 times ]

Here's a little tip, I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but you are supplied with a mask for your wooden deck -

Attachment:
IMG_1781 (2).jpg
IMG_1781 (2).jpg [ 387.83 KiB | Viewed 1320 times ]

it's the backing plastic, you should be able to see it here. Exactly the right size!

What I will do is cut the edges slightly where needed to allow space for the masking tape around the bulkheads etc

Well, that's about it for this year, so I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year

All the best

Cheers, Jabb

Relegated to the garage! Aahhghh! well I guess a garage makeover is in your future, with insulation, finished walls, HEAT, and more lights and power outlets. I guess the car will have to live outside from now on. My bench is down in the basement, and yes, we gave that a makeover too lol. Regards and Happy Christmas, Pete .
