Usual old thing...

spend hours staring at momentary glimpses of low-res-old grainy film...

and piecing together the evidence

Upper levels are taking shape.. along with the crane derricks and their platforms, - made in my usual manner of creating the shape in railing--attaching to the mast/tripod structure and then in-filling the 'floor' with white glue--so as to keep the platforms completely thin and as near scale as possible...

( I have indicated these with the arrows ! )

The upper spotting tops had a large number of gussets supporting them ...-- giving the distinctive outline when viewed from a distance....

These were all made of slivers of papera few in brass-- tacked into place with Matt varnish--and then back-filled with CA glue on the end of a piece of springy stretched sprue...

@: LE BOSCO...

thank you!!

I proceed onwards....

For want of a better word...there some 'lookout' (?) boxes fwd and aft at the base of the aft funnel .

The plans are not conclusive as to their shape--the original( removed!) casting showed these to be square...

Examination and cross-referencing of side elevation and overhead photos suggest they had radiused corners

(Note the high water tide mark...)

The vent openings underneath were made of some PE railing cut down...

The yellow line shows the eventual water level--disguising any roughness of finish below this line ... :heh: :cool_2:

The floors were made using white glue--these are awkward shapes and it ever so easy to introduce excessive thickness when using conventional construction materials...

However-- facilitate the easy spreading of a white glue film--I have subdivided the areas into smaller more manageable sections using small sprue ices to subdivide the areas.

The roofs were made of paper--cut folded in half to achieve symmetry.

The cease is flattened out using lots of pressure in Jewelers smooth pliers

Here seen tacked in place using matt varnish-they will be infused with very thin CA glue to make rigid and impervious to moisture

Next headache will be the stanchion dividers-wish me luck

Very Interesting build you have here Jim.

I have been following your builds for many years and It never surprises me how you find so much Interesting ship builds.

It is only in the last few years that I have decided to comment on this forum after registering.

Your answers to many ways of constructing have helped me and many others to have a go, my handy cap has been the rigging on ships, but again I now have started doing rigging and hope to make a good job of my first.

This project is the first I have seen of a sunken ship build.

Watching with great Interest.

Just great, Jim. Its execution is perfect. :thumbs_up_1: :woo_hoo:

Forward to following their progress, as I have in mind a small diorama like yours.

the moment of truth :D

i'm just curious about the acrilic gel technique.

If it doesn't work, build an easier one:

Ha!

thats a lot of rigging on those airlock tubes.....

image from olaf:

Image

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thankfully the first layer appears to be drying clear....

I think it will take 48 hours or so.

I will then colour tint the water--thinly over the hull and more so in the deep 'water'.

One should not be able to see anything of the ship under water unless on is directly overhead-only the suggestion of the outlines of the stern receding into deeper water aft....

-the previously posted movie footage bears this out--even when viewed from high up--the water simply reflects too much...

useful photos during salvage operations--showing the huge amount of Barnacle and weed growth....

I think I may backdate the depiction time-frame my model slightly to around 1920-- when the searchlights where still in place and the marine growth was yet that extreme....

Looking great Jim :thumbs_up_1: The pic above has a sort of victorian spaceship feel to it. Rising through the clouds and all.

Well the first layer dried clear...the deep stuff on teh aft deck is still milky....

I built a 'dam' of (greased ) styrene strips around the entire base--mainly so that I could get the edge levels flat and fair using a palette knife

( its like spreading butter--but leaving any marks....)

I think this will take about 5 or more days to dry and cure...

...........I may have to start another model.... :cool_2: :cool_2:

Hi Jim,

I know we spoke earlier... but just had to look again before I went to bed and this looks stunning. I can't wait to see a photo of the Gel fully dried and before you have started painting just to see how the translucency of the gel looks with the ship semi-submerged... this is going to finish up as something really, really special... even for you! :thumbs_up_1:

How’s your “sea” drying out Jim? It’s five days tomorrow and I’m itching to see how it’s doing.

Will we get an update?
Rob.

slowly--ever so slowly....

It is in a wire mesh case( dust) with sillica gel sachets and a de-humidifier running on top of the
(flat -topped) hot water tank in the airing cupboard....

it IS clearing-- but I think grass grows faster....

I can see it taking a few weeks... ( arghhh!!!!! )

from what I can see so far it WILL look very very cool!-- in June.... :cool_2:

@ alec... race..? --not me.... Krassin took over 4 months.....

Hindenburg 'could' have been a quickie... but alas....

I think the problem with using thick layers of acrylic gel at a time is that the top layer dries and solidifies faster than the bottom, creating a barrier that makes it even harder for the bottom layers to dry. The only way around this is to do it in multiple thin layers...hmm, that sounds familiar.
