Nick,

For the water, I painted the MDF base with Phthalo Blue acrylic and then started adding coats of acrylic gloss warnish. I've got about 5 coats on there at the moment.

Once the Yukikaze is finished, the plan is to apply a thin layer of gloss acrylic gel and bed the ship into that and then I'll add a few more coats of the varnish which, hopefully, will give a good impression of depth.

I was also about to plan about shining the water just like yours

But I am using Natural Varnish/Plastic Varnish with lots of coats

I've just tried a slightly different technique this morning, for the next varnish coat - I've used Tamiya X22 clear gloss aryclic varnish applied a drop at a time. This dries much thicker that the previous varnish giving an even better impression of depth.

I also have the X-22 you have

But I am using it for my TLE classes to be used for a project.

By the way, Your dio is awesome!

Keep it up

And don't forget to breathe!

Slight change of plan for the 'water' - having tried the Tamiya gloss, I've noticed that it isn't drying flat which is giving a very good impression of calm water so I'm going to do without the gel and go for another layer of the gloss which I'm going to tint slightly with brown/black.

In the meantime, I'm still considering lighting the diorama as Kym Knight did with his superb USN harbour diorama. If I do, a couple of the bulidings are going to have visible interiors.

Below is a shot of the interior I'm doing for the 'office' section of the building in the centre of the diorama:

More pics to come as I progress.

More progress pics:

First up the right hand most building. The window opening has been glazed with clear sytrene, the glazing bars were simply scribed on the 'back' side of the styrene and give a good enough impression without having to try and paint the bars. The use of the X22 Tamiya gloss has exceeded my expectations, note how it has dried giving the impression of calm water and the reflections in the 'water'.

Progress as of this morning:

Left hand side of the dock - small boat is from the Revel 1/480th Yorktown kit. All the small boats and the ship will be glued to the base as it is now and then additional layers of clear gloss will be added.

A little more progress:

Work has begin on the Yukikaze, brass barrels (which are superb) are from ModelMarine: https://shop.modellmarine.de/index.php?cPath=24 and are well worth the money.

I haven't got that far with the ship as I've just ordered the Tom's Modelworks PE set so don't want to do too much until that arrives.

Image

Overhead shot of the crane which has received it's first full coat of paint. This will be touched up where necessary and then the weathering will commence after which I'll fit the hook assembly and relevant cables.

General view of the centre of the diorama which shows are couple of the beautiful GHQ Japanese trucks which are in the process of being painted and weathered.

Looking superb John, and those GHQ vehicles are just what you needed :thumbs_up_1:

If you go to their website they have weathering instructions, I followed these and my vehicles came out looking very realistic (I've posted pics earlier)

I've not done anything on the diorama for a while as I've been waiting for the Tom's PE set for the Yukikaze. It's now arrived so it's full steam ahead but I thought I'd show you what I've been building in the meantime. It's not a ship but was bought for me by my son as a birthday present.

So, here's my foray (a'la Kim Knight) into the dark side of armour modelling:

Image

Image

Image

It's the Tamiya 1/35th scale Challenger 1 tank and it's built completely out of the box. Fit was perfect with no filler at all being necessary. It's at the decalling stage at the moment, hence the shine but will be getting a wash, flat coat and then a good going over with weathering powders and pastels.

Impressive work, thank you for the update. Sorry to hear you dropped the crane but it looks solid enough to survive but very frustrating as well.

Cheers,

peter F :thumbs_up_1:
