Wow, looking at the photos of the real ship stern and then looking at your model is amazing. Now, let's be real...come on...you photoshop the water out of the pic of the real ship and layered it with a pic of your work bench..I mean, it cool if got the photoshop skills and all but I'm not fooled :cool_2:

J/k...it's totally awesome :woo_hoo:

Mike

Thanks , tiger! You got me.... I never even smelled glue before. The hardest thing is to wait long enough to post my fake pictures, to make you guys believe I spent that time with actual building.... Well, I managed to photoshop a few more images. But this time hopefully everyone will pick up all the mistakes that show that I am actually building parts. :lol_1:

I worked on the #2 elevator area. It is almost ready, as far as the hull goes. I am still looking for that "special someone" to help me out with the elevator PE I mentioned a few posts ago. :anyone: :please:

I also worked the area just below the island. I love this section, it is very unique to the ship I am doing. The Nimitz only looked like this for a few years. It's a complicated section, and I really enjoyed putting it together. It is almost complete!

Weathered the deck, the starboard half is nearing completion as well! I love it when things come together after such an anticipation. So far I am pretty happy with her looks, bit let's hear it from you guys!

Happy modeling: Laci

Hey, the deck is getting more alive even with out aircraft!

I may have overdone some of it, but I've seen pretty large oil stains on the usual parking spots, so again: I made up for some of the other modelers missing them :lol_3:

I am off to messing up the port side half of the deck! The MH-53-s are coming along too, but really slowly.....

Cheers: Laci

That is just beautiful work Laci. The construction with all the attention to detail, painting, and weathering to bring it all together is excellent! :woo_hoo: This has shaped up to be an amazing build man. Can't wait to see the aircraft aboard. Just a great job!

Thanks guys!

Nicholas: I think I may have over-exaggareted some of the things, but this is where the strategically-placed aircrfat will come in;) Thank you though, if a guy with your eyes doesn't think it's horrible, than it must be O.K. :heh:

Doug: yeah, aircraft.....I started building those Sea Dragons: cockpit, seats, instrumentpanels, fuses in the open fuse boxess, band-aids in the first aid box, the whole 324 yards....It's brutal! I officially hate seats in this scale. (and I've only built 4 so far! :lol_pound: )
I've always appreciated the work of guys who built tons of open cockpits-especially Blake- but now my appreciation grew MUCH bigger. I always knew that a ship underway won't have all canopies and service panels open on it's airwing, but now I am thinking closing ALL of those is a good idea. To keep the salty air, dust and such out, right?! :lol_3:

nah, I'll be doing the mazochistic routine....beach about it but plow trhu it and be proud of it when it's done....

well, happy modeling!

Hey Doug, have you gotten the tiny uranium-rods for your tiny reactors? :lol_4:

Laci

Laci, dude, this keeps getting better and better. Your deck and hull weathering is phenomenal :thumbs_up_1:

Seriously, you're gonna make me go back, nit-pick, start rebuilding stuff and get into a fight with my wife over the dining room table being utilized for another three months

Guys!!!!!
This is a big day!!! It's bigger than big. It is monumental!!!! Everybody, get their most expensive booze, call in sick, and then rip the phone cord out of the wall, and start celebrating: the hull is done. DONE ! D.O.N.E.!! :woo_hoo:
I am done weathering the deck, and the number 2 elevator is only one part away from completion.
Here are my latest pictures, come celebrate with me!!!!!

what should I continue with: island or airwing?

Cheers :Laci

She's been through the mill, that one.

As for your question, I suggest you do the island next rather than the airwing. If you do it the other way 'round, then you have to worry about constantly knocking off little planes and losing (or, worse, breaking) them while installing the island. Plus once the island is attached, it makes for easier spotting of the aircraft (you wouldn't want to accidentally glue down one plane too close and have it interfere with the fit of the island, would you?).

But then, I'm not really a carrier builder. ;)

Wow, that must be the most complete 1/350th carrier model I have ever seen!
Bravo on all the detailing, the weathering (flight deck looks great! Not overdone at all in my opinion but just right), and the sheer stamina.

I vote island too, but why not make some prototype planes in between, as a preparation for the "series production"...

Cheers,

Marijn

Thanks a bunch, fellow modelers!!

Marijn: I love the way you love my build, but as for the most detailed carrier I think first place goes to DWD a.k.a. Doug with his Enterprise. That guy is nucking futs! But thank you, I am very happy with these results. It's just cooking up crazy ways to build most everything I see on reference photos.... I am just a scaled down photo-copier
"series production" I hope I can pump 'em out like russian factories used to pump out farm tractors..

Goodwood: Yeah, this Nimitz came out pretty abused, didn't it?
Since I am planning on taking-flying-this model to competetions in Europe and USA, I designed the Island, the radar mast and the Belknap -poles to be removable for transportation. I built them to firmly fit onto their respective spaces, but all can be removed in seconds. The airwing isn't going to be attached permanently either, except for the service vehicles (not the tilly) and crew. Because of the reasons you stated. Hmm...

Jacques has a thing going for the airwing....tough...
I have a feeling I will learn to hate working on the planes a few times over, so I will start with them, and when I need break I either jump out the window, or start working on the island...

Thanks for your continous support, guys!

Laci,
I am soooooooo happy for you, before you know it your going to be done, then you can move into my model shop and help me build, really buddy your NIMITZ is on for the record books, you've probably added 50 pounds in photo etch, so now the ship builders are going to have to change the displacement charts for the ship. I hope one day to see that monster in person.

I'm holding a beer high for you my friend.

I appreciate the fact that I am considered in need of a mental health exam....maybe we can go together, because I don't believe you are any less sane with all the detail you have added to your Nimitz as well.

As far as the Air Wing and island go, working on the Air Wing a little at a time and then taking a break to work on the island is an excellent idea, or you may really end up needing some professional mental health help!! :heh:

40-60 aircraft is a ton of repetitive work to complete and much tenacity will be needed. Good luck Laci. Make sure you are checking in with us here so we can make sure you're ok. You got me to thinking how many aircraft I will be adding to mine and I came up with 63 aircraft total............guess we better schedule that padded room and straight jacket appointment after all........ :eyes_spinning:

Great that you are planning taking this model around the shows, and also to Europe! I really hope to be able see it in the flesh one day. Maybe English IPMS nationals in Telford this november?

I don't envy you flying with a model like that though. I have flown with figure models and small boxed dioramas many times, but it was easy enough to keep the transportation box for those within carry-on size limits. Still always a stressful undertaking...
A model like yours might pose quite some logistal challenges, so I'm sure you know you'll have some planning to do about that... But it will be worth the effort!

This is quite amazing, sir! Your work is a great study in precision and weathering. Thank you so much for sharing the progress of your build. Like so many threads here, this build is an eduction in every post!

HI there!

Yeah, transporting this beast around is quite the challenge I imagine. I won't be ready for this fall, March 2015 is my goal.

It is great that we are looking out for each other's mental health, but I think it's the perfect "blind leading blind " situation here: we are all effing insane! :lol_3:

Well here is my first bit, I think I made it out sane, but these birds aren't finished yet, and even if they were, it's only 2 out of the 52!!!! :lol_3:

I finished most of the 2 MH-53-s I am planning on staging as a couple of visitors on my carrier (or to use their gigantic size to cover up mistakes on the helicopter landing spots on the angle deck. ( I forgot which one  )

About these choppers:
They are Bronco, and are very excellent kits. I am seriously considering buying 6 or 8 of these and convert them into CH-53E-s for my Wasp. They are the BEST S-65-s in this scale. The widows are actually pretty clear -the ones on the sides are perfect see-thru! But only the fuselage pieces (halves and the nose piece) are made of clear plastic, the rest is grey. These guys provide PE as well!!!!
About these: some parts are better off being built using copper instead. While we get the main rotor in both plastic and PE , the tail rotor only comes in plastic, and for the scale it's pretty thick. When I am done with the main rotor , I will do a bit of writing about that too.
The decals are awesome for the most part: they are thin, sharp, and colored right! BUT: they are for only one aircraft: number 556....This is the smaller problem. The horsehead is only printed the same way for both sides , so for the port side it would be facing backwards.... I fixed it by installing this decal flipped over-so the white side showing towards us, and later filled it in with grey. For the second chopper I used numbers from separate decal set (I forgot I had)
I opened the side door on both choppers, and the ramp on one of them. I had to fabricate a rear ramp for this, for the one in the kit is for the minesweeping set-up.
:Oops_1: make sure to paint the joining surfaces of the nose piece black before attaching it to the fuselage. I only did this on the second helicopter. Without this the `windows`will look like a white magnifying glass...But painted black it gives them model a more realistic look. You might even notice this difference on the photos.
Surprisingly these choppers sit on their wheels without any weight needed in the nose.
All the other changes/modifications are listed on the photos below. I think today's A.D.D.-infected society will appreciate those more (including me :lol_3: ), rather than reading all this B.S.

I am pretty happy with the way they look, and I gotta say, Blake's (Nwarty) Nimitz airwing highly motivated me in the making of these tiny jewels.

Cheers: Laci
