I think Trumpeter confused F-8's with A-7's. Nice overhaul so far.

  Thanks Ryan! you are SOOOOOO right! Don't think for a second that I am not regretting this whole thing... And it's funny you mention that the airwing should be busy doing something OFF the ship!
I mentioned in James' thread that in the future I am planning on building a modern Nimitz, but it will be modeled in Norfolk or something, because hangar doors are gonna be mostly closed and NO FREAKING AIRPLANES or DECK GEAR!!! Maybe a forklift. ONE! NO crew either. It's an "after hours Nimitz", abandoned in the drydock. (waterline , of course  ) (probably 1/700 scale) That's how much I am regretting getting involved this much with the current build.
But thank you for the compliments!! And I am proud to say that I take all my pills, every single day!

Cheers: Laci

Yeah! isn't that a Crusader nose on those Trumpy A-7s?! So I am not crazy after all! Or at least I am not alone

Hello gentlemen!

First thing first: I would like wish all you fellow modelers a VERY productive , modelbuilding-filled happy new year!

I know I haven't been "faithful" and posting-or even checking out every one else's posts but that is about the change in the new year. Zsofi (my lovely wife) and I had been working our butts off so we can buy a brand new home for ourselves, and that left us very little spare time. And this is partly why it has been a while since I posted anything. It has been a very slow process here at the Nimitz-factory. But it has been fun, all the little planes are taking shape!

Literally all of them: no planes to build, now it's just adding details. Well, this just means that there won't be any more puttying and sanding.

-All the Corsairs are built, 11 in total, 2 of those with canopies open. All painted , and awaiting decals. Some of the detail can be added only after they received matt cote.
-All the Intruders are in the same stage as the Corsairs,: painted (minus landing gear) awaiting decals. Those are supposedly coming from Mr Mark Tutton (from starfighter decals) himself. He is now planning on releasing full airwing decals for the cruise I picked, but no word on the date yet. I am hoping to get my set in the next couple of months. YEAY! I can't wait!!!!
To make the A-6s a bit more exciting I will have a KA-6D built because those guys kept their hi-viz markings til the end.

-I finished 1 of the 2 Prowlers!! One still needs some work on the wings, before I can hack them off and "fold them".
603 is just about complete though, it just needs 2 drop tanks. Again, the PE is a mix of both of the big brands
WEM: Nose gear, main gear, nose gear folding door, refuelling probe
TOM's: Nose gear doors, main gear rear door, pylons,

The blade-antennas and the little round disc on the rear of the bump on the top of the fin are era specific, the antennas moved around in the years, and that disc disappeared completely.
And of course looking at these planes from a bit of a distance is always good for them:)

AND TO SPREAD THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: Now that I know how many planes I will have in total (46) I has become evident that I WAAY overshopped when it comes to PE. I have a ton left over for virtually all NAVY types. So if you need PE parts for any planes, let me know, I can most likely help you out!

Oh and I heard back from our weapon-making friends from Hungary: They are planning on releasing the tiny bombs/drop tanks in the coming spring, maybe even sooner...

Thanks for following, and again: Happy new year and happy modeling!

Cheers: Laci

Laci as always fantastic work, Question for you though?

Are you going to add the wing stabilizers to the aircraft with folded wings? When flight ops was over they would install stabilizers to keep the wings from flexing in the wind, and always when they went to the hangar bay, the stabilizers for the most part were always painted red, but I have seen some painted yellow. They are always used on A-6's, EA-6B's and S-3's. When the aircraft where on the flight deck and wings folded they would not use them if the aircraft was going to fly a few more sorties.

Not trying to add more work for ya, just something that is all most always over looked. If you do want to make them and install them, I think that either .020 or .015 styrene rod will work for this pretty well.

Again though looking good as always.

Thanks for your torturous comment, unfortunately I know the red poles you are talking about ( I didn't know they use them on S-3s as well, so I learned something again) BUT fortunately 55% of the pictures I have or looked at have those safety posts omitted, so you know where I am going with this hehe...

Don't you think I spend enough time on these damn things?!?!? :eyes_spinning: :eyes_spinning:

Just kidding. They totally could be better if this was the only model I ever wanted to finish.

Thanks for pointing this and other things out, I love learning more about these ships, and fortunate enough to have a guy like you to learn from! :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers: Laci

:lol_pound: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh I knew you'd take the easy way out, no, really its a option that if done would need to be done during the early construction phase cause recessed holes would need to be drilled to hold the rods in place. So, if you ever build another Nimitz or maybe an Enterprise, you are here by directed to add the stabilizers to the air wing. :lol_pound: :rolf_3:

Hey Laci!! It's good to see your update man!! The detail you are adding to your aircraft is amazing. Those things look exceptional. Your Air Wing will be absolutely outstanding. Can't wait to see them aboard your Nimitz. Keep up the great work Laci!! Glad to hear about your new home too! Congratulations! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you guys for checking out the (slow) progress, and cheering me on.

I am stuck with the aircraft since I am waiting for decals to be produced. Now I am transitioning into working on the "yellow gear". Thank god they were yellow back then circa 1985. Some more color on the deck.
The tractors are all gonna be Goffy/Black Dog, and the rest of the little carts and forklifts are JAG. I was going to build an MB-5 firetruck (which I would've enjoyed quite a bit) but Jim advised me that they were phased out by firetractors. So that's too bad, especially since JAG's firetractors are not depicting the versions from the '80s, and they will require some mods. ( I would rather put all that work into stracthbuilding something new, like my tilly, as opposed to modifying resin accessories I paid too much money for)

No pictures yet, since the little tractors need some work too ( the floor is missing on some of them after cutting off the stub).

I will post as soon as I can , although I don't think I will be able to create anything outstanding with the deck equipment, since some of you guys did paint them as nicely as they can be done. (Blake, James and Ryan :thumbs_up_1: ) And I am a bit worried that Doug will put little diesel engines in his, which I won't , so what's the point?! :heh:

Happy modeling!! Cheers: Laci

Hi everyone!

It's been a month, and DID have some time to work on deck equipment!

They are a mix of Black Dog and JAG. I was also able to get some NC-8A type firetruck from a gentleman in Arizona. Those are the correct ones for the era I am modelling, but I have yet to work on those.

The one thing that makes these tiny deck vehicles pop is good decaling! On the front, passenger side in front of the wheel there is a little service panel was painted red in a lot of ships. I am not sure if Nimitz's tractors did, but I put tiny red rectangular decals here. I also figured that the letters on the front fenders should be visible so I used small letters from other left over decals for this.
Another nice touch is the red lines on the top and back of the 'huffer'-units.

-Red decals on the fire tractor make for more accurate stripes than painted ones.-

-The headlight on these tractors are either blue or red. Not 'silver" ( or chrome  ,so I corrected this on my 48 scale tractor , real quick) These lights are much smaller that what the cast suggests. Just tiny dots really.

- For the tractors that have railing on their rear bumpers, I used PE ladders.

-the towing hitches were broken off most of them so I used some small pieces of styrene to make the tractors complete.

-when cutting the wheels off the sprue, I cut the front ones in an angle so I could have 'turning' wheels on some of them.

- The small forklifts are JAG, and are pretty accurate, I just used some decals on the sides, otherwise they come out great after painting.

- The big forklift in the JAG kit is vary accurate, but unfortunately they don't use this type on CVNs. I realized this after building it and I am not going to scratchbuild a CVN specific one.

-The NC-2A ground power units are very accurate, didn't change anything, (except getting rid of the lights in the back and drilling out the exhaust) :lol_3:

-The scrubber is very accurate as well. At least for modern times. I couldn't find pictures of it from the '80s so I just painted it yellow and called it good.

I have 24 tractors built, but I doubt I will install all of them. Made too many :rolf_3:

I am just about done with deck equipment, I am working on the #2 elevator area. And waiting for decals from Mark..

Happy modeling Guys!

Cheers: Laci

Beautiful work! That pic from the stern looks just amazing!
The tractors are really finished like little models of their own right, as they should.

But I don't see any figures in the pics yet? :heh: :heh: :heh:
