Mini-Update...foremast painted and installed. Need to touch it (and a few other things) up, then I can start adding the photo-etch railings.

Lots of sh*t going on, and not much time to build lately. But I found some time today, where I finally got started on the railings. Using Voyagers "1/350 DKM Railings" (set FH350014). Pretty easy to work with so far.
Attachment:
File comment: The set comes with four sections of railing that follow the curve of the bow. Oddly, however, they aren't the same length.

Found a nice photo of the forward part of Z-17 in New Vanguard's "German Destroyers '39-'45", which shows canvas dodgers around the railings of the number 2 mount. So, I've started replicating those with white glue:

Stopping here for the night to let everything dry. Hopefully will get back to it this week...

Work on the railings continues....

File comment: Painted the white glue "dodgers" around mount #2. Used a humbrol "linen" color to simulate canvas. Not sure if it's 100% accurate, but I wanted to add some other colors and break up the greys.

All the platforms are done being railed - now it's time to finish the railings around the hull. Once those are done, I only have to add some boat davits and the pennant number decals.

Thanks! I've enjoyed building it so far.
Got the white glue on the railings around the midships platform, then started railing the port side main deck. I stopped when I got to the stern, as I started to get more ham handed than usual, and even broke the flag staff. :Mad_6:

If time permits later today (it's already early Sunday AM here in NJ), I'll start on the starboard side. Once those railings are added, I'll paint the midships platform, fix the flag staff and add the davits.

Can't tell from photos what type of rails these ships has at the stern, but I'm guessing nothing substantial, as they needed to be able to roll the mines off the stern.

While looking for photos of the stern of the ship, I noticed something I missed: I was so pleased that I had the upper platforms railed...until I realized I forgot the top of the small deck house on the aft superstructure. :doh_1:

Problem became that the straight bar railing I was using from the Voyagers set was all used up. I dipped into the Trumpeter Z-30 and took out some generic railings and used those to rail the top of that deck house. I also used some of that set to fill in two small gaps on the aft end of the aft superstructure. I want to start working on the rest of the railings, but I am going to put it aside and let it dry for awhile. Perhaps later I can get back to it.
Attachment:
File comment: Railings added to the top of the deck house, white glue added for canvas dodgers. The glue will level itself out as it dries.

The railings are done! The davits are on! Time to gloss coat the hull and then add the pennant number. But not tonight - got too late, and it's a rainy, humid night here in NJ. Not a good night to airbrush. Here's the latest batch of photos...

File comment: The davits. I ended up cutting off the locating pins on three of these, since the holes in the deck were too small and I didn't want to force the issue and either break the davit or mangle the PE railings.

The davits are only surface mounted, so I'm a little concerned about trying to rig them, but I'll give it a shot. Hoping to airbrush Future in the next day or two. Not sure how much, if any, weathering I'll do. Being a pre-war ship, I'm sure she was pretty clean.

Looking really good martin! I really like the look and color addition that you have gotten with the canvas dodgers.

Much appreciated, gentleman.

Airbrushed a coat of future on her last night. When I looked this morning, I could see she'll need another coat on the hull - don't want those big pennant numbers silvering.

Took a mental health day today - no work! A little building time today, then Eric F**king Church at Madison Square Garden tonight!

Anyway, got the pennant numbers on this morning. If you look at the photo on this page, it appears the kit decals are somewhat under scale. Which is unfortunate, since those big pennant numbers look so cool. Still, I'm pleased with the way they came out.

I need to airbrush another light coat of future on the hull to protect the decals, and then I can start weathering. Busy weekend ahead - after the concert tonight I'm going up to Poughkeepsie, NY tomorrow for a model show - so I don't know if I'll get back to her until next week.

Thanks for all the positive comments - they are appreciated and help keep me motivated.

Finished the weathering tonight. Last night I did the hull with Winsor & Newton "Blue Black". Tonight I did the superstructure with the same companies "Payne's Gray". It's very light - which is what I wanted. Actually looks better to the naked eye. I'm especially pleased with how the hull came out.

Going to let this dry until the weekend at least before trying to flat coat the model.

Great looking build you have there Martin. Your builds are always a pleasure to follow . I didn't realize how big the Z-17 was until you posted the picture of it and the Livermore in the background.
