More postponing today; the wife and I had to do step 8 and 9 today of our Enterprise model. It's a great model though I can't remember Spock being this hairy... |

You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? The perfect model kit. Its structural perfection is matched only by its buildability. But seriously (I know my scifi) these Lego kits are really wonderful. The manual is perfect, not using the same shape of brick with different colors per step, clear (and weird) colors to make sure the builder doesn't get confused, step-by-step instructions.... Such a delight so see how everything aligns while building. |

I never thought I would see the day!!!! I have been following this build since before the earliest thread from 2008... so what is it now EJ...? Its way over ten years, because you had something long before then... 12? 15 years? Whatever... not really the point. You have done so much with this model and we have all learnt so much from you over the years... about Hood, obviously, but also about care and commitment, and your generous support with photo's, answering questions, the turrets you did for WEM (Twice... as I still have the first ones you sent to me many years ago), so thank you I'm hoping you will be going on another few years yet... there is still so much to learn and so much more inspiration we can all get. Maybe Telford 2020...? Whatever, wherever you first show it, I will be there

Ah, thanks for the kind words, and I suppose for depressing me as well I try not to think how long it has been, only that I want to finish her... one part at a time and release the AMS a bit. If I can!Not sure when the model will be done... but we'll see. Telford 2037? |

Thanks! I thinks so too... one colour is still a bit shiny so if that does not improve post-wash I'll have to add some matt finish. I noticed I have been too careful adding the primer, so there are regions of underspray that are very very grainy and in the worst spots adding wash only will move off the paint; spots have been repaired but I'm not happy with that (on the other hand, live and learn). So for close-ups this is definitely not good (so no close-ups will be added ) but also very difficult to see even from very close. Most of that is below the boat deck anyway (also in the same stage of completion). I noticed this fine image on the IWM site showing bollard wear & tear and cable colour (the one around the bollards)  ON BOARD THE SUBMARINE DEPOT SHIP HMS FORTH, HOLY LOCH, SCOTLAND, 1942. © IWM (TR 535) IWM Non Commercial Licenseso I left the cable in the deck colour and I'll give it a very dark black / rusty brown wash... perhaps gently drybrush... After touching up the recent painting I'll add a brown wash for the deck... adding in shadows, dirt spots, high-lighting and a white salt wash (carefully, probably a very light gray). Correct shadows. Move on to next region. The railing and awning stations supports need to be-etched and I noticed that hand-painting such a large object that you cannot rotate WITH railing in place would have been a disaster for the railing, so that's a good thing! I was constantly look for an angle to paint the sides of all these deck details. |

The weekend was busy with birthdays that needed to be celebrated and such with family blocking precious hobby time, but we did manage to finish our Astronef model. It went really quicker then I expected. Attachment: easter2.jpg I also managed to touch up all the gray areas and add a wash to the deck. I applied two very light washes using van Dyke Brown oils thinned by Winsor & Newton's Sansoder with a few hours in between; again a very hours later I made a correction pass using the thinner only, removing excess oils around some parts and removing 'dusty' areas; I want to add filters and dusty layers later, but not in this colour. The wash pulled the colours closer together and accents the planking details, but exactly how I wished it would work: not overly strong! This is a shot taken in daylight. Attachment: deckupdate_16.jpg The next steps will be adding a last pass on all deck details, adding shadows and highlights. |
