the 12ft Dingy... This has turned into quite a little project as there is no boat this size that comes with the kit or in my spare parts box... I had to make this from the bows of a 1/96 scale Constitution boat and bits of plastic stock.. Finally have something that looks exceptable to me...

What to do ?? I am missing clear lantern part 388.. I contacted Heller 6 months ago and have received no reply.. I am thinking of using the one that is left and try to use it to make a mold .. Sigh...

Going to work the mizzen masts gaff boom and rig it before I add the 30ft sea cutters... The kits gaff parts would never take the strain of being rigged for any length of time before they start to bend.. I will try to use the ends next to the mast as they have the correct shapes to fit the mast.. I will use a metal pin and two stage epoxy glue and turn the booms out of basswood dowels on my mini lathe.

Starting a grand experiment... Im using the kit plastic sails as templates for sails made from silkspan.. I have done this in the past with good effect but not on sails this big before.. Here is the gaff with first coat of silkspan 50/50 white glue and water. We will let this dry and peel from plastic sail and go from there. I plan to add thin ribbons of silkspan were the reef points are and rope around the edges... We will see how this goes..

top left is the kits gaff sail. top right is my first attempt made out of silk span with several coats of 50/50 mix of water and white glue plus a coat of white enamel... On the bottom is my 2nd attempt made from a high thread count cloth. The cloth has the reef bands and edges reinforced to help with bending the sail to the booms .. panels were drawn in .. Going with no2 .. I still have to work the hammock holders on the poop deck before I rig the sail.

The poop decks hammock holders have often been depicted as having a canvas cover over them ... I added a balsa wood form between the stations and will cover this in tissue paper and white glue to depict the canvas cover..
