Some time ago, I got the Lai Yuan kit from SS-Models. The casting is moderately good, small parts are sometimes ok, sometimes really bad, sometimes nonexistent. There is also not much documentation on this ship (see CASF thread), which fought gallantly at Yalu. Thus, in many cases, I will have to speculate on details. I will be using North Star Novik 1/700 set as the main details source, and lots of different 1/700 and even 1/350 sets as extra part source.

The hull matches well to the only drawing which I have. I added the outboard ladders from spare box, and scratch built the drainage chutes. Coaling hatches were added from the North Star Novik 1/700 set. Anchors are from lion roar set. Bitts are from SS-Model, brass turned + PE "Destroyer size".

White line is a decal from Xtradecals.

Lots of further work on my Lai Yuan.

I finished her fore superstructure, and installed the fore funnel on her. The fore superstructure needed lots of rework to look good - doors, windows, ladders (mostly North Star), railings (Lion Roar), and bridge wing supports (which were originally biplane wing struts from GMM's IJN auxiliary ship set) added. The funnel received a whistle from the Novik set, and a funnel cap formed out of 3-bar railing bit. I want to try to rig the funnel stays using 0.1mm nickel silver wire today, lets see if that would work. Would move backwards in detailing in the next days, with a myriad of vents midships, and several boat racks midships which need to be scratch build. The vents would be a mix of kit's resin, kit's plastic, and BMK ones.

Some more work - I am detailing her from the front superstructure backwards. For the funnel stays, I used the hard 0.1mm nickel silver wire from Albion Alloys - works wonders in this case. Guns are just placed there, not yet glued. 6" guns got the PE shields from North star Novik set. Funnel caps are made of 3 bar railing.

Quite a small ship she was, much smaller then most of her contemporaries.
