Work has progressed on the drydock gantry crane which is modeled after the Harlen and Wolf crane. Here are some pictures of the build progress.

Just had a 8 hour session in the slipway, made good progress on a few subs, the comm. cargo gantry crane, scratched a barge crane and started frame work for 4 bullhead dock cranes. Here's pics of the work so far.

The little barge crane that I scratched together is made from:
1/700 scale "nameplate", a stand plate frome a Iterilia NIMITZ 720 scale kit, 1 HO scale pipe stand, and a crane from a 350 scale BB-59 kit that was destoryed when I moved.

Total cost to make: $0.00
Time to make: 20 minutes

See if you are like me and keep all pieces leftover from a kit that are not used then things like this are possible. I have a bunch of carrier stands that I'm going to use to make "standard" types of buildings like maintance sheds and things such as that. The name plates that come with the 700 scale tamaya, hasagawa, and fijumi kits are perfect for making barges of verious sizes, just cut off the angled brace and sand flat, add a 720 scale stand plate to the bottom, add whatever you want to the barge or nothing at all, your choice, the "stand plate" can be painted black on the edge to give to antifoling touch.

If your not so advanced in scratch building like myself this is a way to pratice and learn that cost you nothing. Yes these are very simple craft to build but the important thing is your building something from scratch and building "skills". I really had a great time coming up with this crane barge and finding the parts to make it. I had no clue how it would turn out seeing the pieces on the bench, but after playing around and test fitting parts here and there I found the concept I liked and started gluing it together.

So, the moral of this post is those parts that are not used from kits can be used to make things like this barge crane. So don't throw those things away, put them in a "scratch parts box", and those other parts from kits you didn't use put in a "spares box". After a while you'll have some nice pieces to scratch build with and make nice additions to your diorama's or as a stand alone static display.

Have a great modeling day.

Thanks Doug I can't wait for it all to start coming together myself.

Ok, just came in from another 7 hour day of building and boy what a day.
I posted earlier about building barges and things from stand plates, I was working with this a lot today and built some nice things to show everyone...

Hope you like these pics.

Hi ya Mark,
Yeah this is going to be one big diorama the first layout is going to start out 3' wide x 6' long, then moduals are going to be added as the build progresses. I'm going to start making some masters from wood and plastic stock for the piers so I can make resin castings for the harbor, going need a bunch.

Well just came in from the slipway and made some modest progress, I've now completed the NEW JERSEY, and nearly finished the MISSOURI but have to allow paint to cure before progress resumes. I've also completed a couple of yard craft and built another. These little things are actually pretty fun to do, just lets the imagionation run wild. I have also built six more structures from the skywave kit of barracks and hangars. I've also constructed the base of a bullhead crane and have the layout completed for the crane assembly.

I will post pictures soon as I want to make more progress to really show the work envolved.
Happy modeling to all.

Yeah gotta have somewhere to put all those aircraft, I was thinking of the air field being 24"x36" with a 36" runway and taxi way, I have already been building aircraft hangars. I have alot to plan out and I know that with proper planning this is going to be so neat.

Yeah Blake, I'm planning to start the the building of the first two tables in a week or two, the material is going to cost about 20. to 25. dollars per table. I will have both tables done in a day and ready for the layout of the harbor. Then the real work begins.......................

Well just came in from another nice session in the shop, spent most of the afternoon in there and this was a nice time scratch building a few more things. I made two trash litter barges to go with my tug I made, then I started building a ferry barge to transport the "captian's gigs" and motor launches on. I also scatched a berthing barge but still have some work to do there.
I then decided I would go thru my "old damaged fleet" and see what I could salvage, boy did I find some good things I have salvaged several cranes of different types to use on barges and some small dock cranes.
I also finished building another TICO and started overhauling another, did some detail painting on the THOMAS S. GATES, some minor detail work to finish her and then I'll get the second and third ones finished. I have a surprise coming soon for everyone, remember when I said something about having a sub coming out of the construction building???? Well guess what?????
I have found the nesseary materials to construct this sceen, well the building anyway, it was just by shear dumb luck that I came across these materials, after close studying I found that they are going to be perfect for this, I'll be holding off on the construction of this building as I am quickly running out of room in the shop to store things. I'm going to have to give the shop a good cleaning fore and aft and reorganize things if I wish to continue building at least until I get the tables built.
I am also planning a new area in the slipway to begin making molds and resin castings of some of the masters I have made, this is something I've never tackled before and can't wait to try it out. I have been studying the process and materials involved and I think I understand all the does and don'ts involved, but I know some of you here have tackeled this before and I know I can ask you here for help.

Good night all, and happy modeling
