Post subject:  1/350 Trumpeter Type 23 Duke class frigate HMS Westminster

Many years ago I served in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer. I always dreamt of having a model of the ship I served on and during the summer I found out about the trumpter model kits of the ship class. Just as I was about to buy the Montrose I heard that they were actually releasing the HMS Westminster (my ship), I immediatly pre-ordered the model as well as some extra parts from WEM required to get the ship exactly how I wanted here.

A few things to note about this build. I've never worked with Photoetch before, I've only just heard about using stretched sprue (awesome technique!) and I've not actually really built any model kits for about 5 years, since my hand isn't as steady as it used to be! So whilst I'm really hopeful to get a good quality build, I'm also slightly concerned that my skill levels may let me down!

Any tips on the build would be greatly appreciated!

The Siren decoy launchers I ordered from WEM, the kit only comes with 2, but 4 are needed

And now some pictures of the builds progress!

The Merlin EH-101, really happy this version of the kit came with the Merlin and not the Lynx.

Adding the transom flap to the aft of the ship, was apain getting it to flow correctly with the shape of the hull, but pretty happy with the results.

The initial base parts assembled with the primer coat applied
Image

First coats of paint applied to the forward island, I used some brass to create the minigun emplacements on the bridge wings.

The Bridge area and mainmast with thier initial coat of paint.
Image

The midships island, I've used stretched sprue for the aerial whips, I need to redo the starboard funnel whip though as it got slightly bent.
Image

The hanger island, I used one of the old satcoms in the kit and cut it to shape to create the dome that isn't included in the kit, but that the ship has.
Image

Started painting the lower hull, really happy how the transom flap turned out.
Image

The Merlin fully painted with decals applied, just need to add a layer of matt to seal in the decals and even out the finish.

Test fitting of all the parts so far. I'm still waiting for my PE from WEM to arrive, they are really backlogged right now. Kinda getting to a point where I can't really progress much more with the build until the PE arrives. Fully intend to add PE ladders all over the ship, still wondering how I'll do all the warning lines around the ship as well, since they wern't included in the decals with the kit. Have some anchor chains in order as well for the focsle.

I'll try to keep this thread updated as I move forwards. Any feedback and tips will be greatly appreciated. Would people ercommend me doing a wash on the model to enhanced some of the details? I've never used washes before, but I really want to get this model as good as I can, since it's the ship I served on!

Work continues on the hull. I've added the anti-fouling layer to the hull. I need to getmy hands on the modern RN hawk graphics decal sheets to finish the hull markings off, since the decals that come with the kit (whilst fairly accurate) are not really enough to do a realistic representation of the ship.

I've been told that the skews maybe on the wrong shafts (meaning the instructions of the kit are incorrect). I've reviewed the few images I have of the Type 23's in Drydock and only have images of ships with regular propellers (HMS Iron Duke), the images I have of the ships with skews are either cut so you can't see them, or they are covered up. I suspect they are on the wrong shafts, but if anyone can confirm it for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Might just ask on the ships Facebook page.

Really need my WEM PE to arrive now as I'm seriously running out of things I can do before it arrives, same goes fo the Hawk Modern RN decals.

Just a quick update, this build hasn't been abandoned, it is just on hold until I get the Photoetch I ordered from WEM, sadly they are having issues with thier supplier, I've been waiting for 3 months now for the photoetch! The moment it arrives work will continue on this build!
