Started work today on my third ship in a series of 10 whom participated in IJN's last major operation, Ten-go.
Lots of 25mm guns!!
Source of the drawing is from ModelArt's No.71 Spring 2019 issue, a very helpful resource.
Lots have been written on Yahagi's history so let's skip all that and dive right in:
This build will involve Fujimi's modern yahagi tooling paired with Fivestar's photo etch set.
Since the photo etch set isnt tailored for this kit I probably have my work cut out for me but I already had this kit and this was the only compete set on the market so I bit the bullet and went for it. We'll see how well it goes!
Not off to a hot start but I kinda expected this to happen
Didn't expect the decks to fit the kit since the dimensions obviously differ from the tamiya kit from the last century.
Thankfully Fujimi's new tool has some pretty crisp deck detailing so I can get by with the kit deck just fine.
If anyone wants these decks hmu!
After that the first order of business is to assemble the hull, make sure it is perfectly flat, and add some ballast.
Since this kit isn't part of the waterline or sea way series no metal ballast is included. I always loved the feel of weight so I decided to scavenge some old screws to throw in there.
Meanwhile work started on the bridge.
Unlike the main deck these photo etch replacements actually fit without needing too much surgery.
Crisp brass always has that satisfying look.
And to wrap up the day the hull has been laid down!
Concurrent with the build is the Hamakaze, also a fujimi kit and currently awaiting handrails and rigging.
Always satisfying when the ship lays perfectly flat on the table
