I'm currently working on converting the 1/350 Trumpeter San Francisco to the USS Quincy CA39. I'm using 3D printed parts that I designed in a online CAD program, and having them printed by Shapeways.com. I have the hull glued together, sanded, primed, and the portholes filled and sanded that should not be there for her wartime fit. I got the Hull Red, Haze Gray, and Navy Blue Camo applied, and now just need to paint the black waterline, the light gray camo at the bow and stern and hit it with a clear coat, and the hull is finished. I will add pics of the 3D parts tonight. Stay tuned!

Interested in seeing how this goes. I've been wondering how much work it'd be to make an Astoria and Minneapolis out of the Trumpeter New Orleans kit.

Here are a few pics of the Quincys forward superstructure that I created in the Online CAD program on Tinkercad.com. Also porthole work on the hull.

Here are some pics of the 3D printed Superstructure. Keep in mind that these are all prototype pieces, and are NOT the final product. These were made to make sure they sized up right. The final pieces are being printed on the professional printers at shapeways.com. They will be smooth and free of lines and blemishes. Also bought a sheet of Artwox Blue Decking, and started laying it down. I will add the deck details later.

Extremely impressive! I seem to hear the line from Ian Malcolm in Jurrasic Park being paraphrased about old school styrene scratch builders. "Don't you mean extinct?" :heh:

Thanks, Matt. It still took some time and effort to design It in that CAD program, but SOOO much less frustrating and much easier than scratching the whole thing. I do believe that 3D printing is going to become a big part of modeling in the near future!

Looking great! If you aren't doing it already, hollow out your designs as much as is structurally sound and possible in order to minimize cost. Shapeways charges partially on part volume so if you hollow out, or shell, your designs as much as you can it often reduces print costs. Areas like the base of the bridge and the director mounting are good places to shell, depending upon how you've broken down the subassemblies.

Again, looking super!

Don't suppose since you are putting them on shape ways, you will make it public for others to purchase? Might help recoupe some of your time and expense and help lazy people like me with this conversion in their someday pile.

Just a thought,

Matt

I actually have thought about selling that on shapeways, just didn't know if there would be much interest. I actually did hollow out the base of the superstructure, and a couple other areas. Definitely helps with price.

I made a lot of progress this weekend, and will try to post some pics tomorrow after work!

I was able to get some more done on the Quincy this weekend. I started on the funnels, still have some detailing to do on those, painted the superstructure prototype pieces to get a feel for how it will look, painted the light gray camo at the bow and stern, removed all of the main deck detail, including the 5" gun tubs, and layed the blue deck down (deck details being added later). I also removed the #1 turret base, and moved it back to its proper position, along with removing the molded on anchor chain, capstands, and other equipment. I then reapplied styrene rod and tube forward to their proper location to replace the details. Both of these areas are molded incorrectly for an accurate Quincy. I built the aircraft hanger and made sure that the hangar roof that I designed would fit properly. I dry fitted everything to the deck in the pics to check proper fit. Hope you guys like. More to come soon!

Thats looking great. That 3d stuff work very well. Just picked up a San Fran kit to convert to CA44. Wish I had some of that 3d stuff. But like everthing else in my life, gonna have to do it the hard way.
Ill be watching your build. Cheers

Actually, it would not take much to change the parts I have to a Vincennes. As her superstructure was almost identical to Quincy's. I had already planned to make a few minor changes to my parts to make a Vincennes also. It wouldn't take me long to do, if your interested.

This is coming along nicely. It's amazing what a 3D printer can accomplish. I am following along as you proceed with the conversion. I have one in the stash, and may pull it out to do as the SF in '42. They just looked mean in that configuration.

I got some work done on the Forward two turrets. Filled in the life raft holes, as the Quincy did not have these here as of Aug 3, 1942, 6 days before her demise. I added Master Models Brass Barrels, and cleaned the gun housing up a bit. I also got the funnels mostly done. Gotta add just a few details, and they'll be ready for primer and paint. My 3D printed parts will be in Monday, and should also be receiving my 5"/25 Resin replacement guns from veteran this coming week. So expect alot of updates!

Everything I ordered for the Quincy is in!! Time to get crackin on this beast! Started work on the 20mm's by Master, but had to take a break.....lol. They are absolutely AMAZING!! The detail is insane!! I recommend them to any modeler! Just be ready for alot of frustration and eye aching, LOL! I filled in most of the portholes on the rear superstructure as they are wrong for the Quincy. I got the rear main gun mostly done, adding Master brass barrels and GMM vertical ladders to it. Tomorrow I plan to start working on the forward superstructure, finish the main guns, and possibly start on the searchlight tower. More updates coming soon!

I added railing and stairs to the rear superstructure, and dryfitted the new polished parts from shapeways to test fit. I added a few photos to compare the old unpolished(gray color) and new polished(white color). I couldnt get that great of pics. Hard to get good lighting to show it, but believe me, they are MUCH better! More to come!
